Bleomycin-induced interstitial lung disease is not a rare complication of treatment and may prove to be fatal if not suspected early in its course. As FDG PET-CT has become an essential clinical tool for interim and end-of-treatment response assessment in oncology, it is important that radiologists/nuclear medicine specialists be aware of the features of this potentially treatable condition so that treatment can be instigated during an early reversible phase before pulmonary damage has occurred. Herein, we report two cases of bleomycin toxicity featuring different patterns on the treatment-response assessment FDG PET-CT scan.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the palliative treatment for metastatic disease with dexamethasone (DEX) plus octreotide (OCT) can improve the anticancer effects of the standard treatment with adriamycin (ADR) on a 4T1 metastatic breast cancer (MBC) model. 4T1 cells were first characterized for the expression of the somatostatin receptors 1-5 and were then inoculated onto the femur of BALB/C mice. Investigation protocols used 4T1 cell proliferation and invasion assays, analysis of radiographic images of the bone metastatic lesions, and overall survival of the diseased animals.

Conventional drug design embraces the "one gene, one drug, one disease" philosophy. Nowadays, new generation of anticancer drugs, able to inhibit more than one pathway, is believed to play a major role in contemporary anticancer drug research. In this way, polypharmacology, focusing on multi-target drugs, has emerged as a new paradigm in drug discovery.

Objective: The purposes of this article are to review the common biologic features of cancer and coronary artery disease assessed with PET tracers, focusing on those already used in the clinic and those with translational potential, and to discuss the current value and expected contribution of PET in diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment monitoring.
Conclusion: PET using a wide variety of radiotracers enhances understanding of pathophysiologic changes shared by cancer and coronary artery disease, helps establish an accurate diagnosis, and aids in prognostic assessment and management decisions. It is likely that with the evolution of therapeutic strategies for blocking the development and progression of both diseases and with the introduction of novel, specific ligands in clinical practice, PET will play an ever stronger role in diagnosis, risk stratification, and monitoring of therapy.

During the last decades, a better understanding of the biology of multiple myeloma (MM) has led to the application of novel treatment strategies for MM patients. The new anti-myeloma regimens produce higher incidence of durable and of better quality responses and they improve overall survival, challenging the dogma of incurable disease, outside the context of allogeneic transplantation. This review presents all these strategies that aim to cure MM, including continuous treatment i.

Objective: Somatic mutations in the GNAS1 gene, which encodes the alpha-subunit of G stimulatory proteins (gsp), are frequently detected in somatotroph pituitary tumors and have been associated to specific clinical and histopathological characteristics. However, the question whether the presence of a somatic gsp mutation affects the response to somatostatin analog treatment remains unresolved.
Design: Following a literature search, we performed a meta-analysis, including 8 eligible studies, in order to estimate the effect of gsp mutation on the percent reduction of growth hormone (GH) levels during an acute octreotide suppression test (OST).

Recent science evidenced the interlinkage of oxidative stress and cancer. Due to the inherent complexity of cancer and its accompanying effect of oxidative stress, novel molecules, containing combinatorial functionalities should be targeted. Herein, we synthesized gemcitabine-5'-O-lipoate derived from a regioselective coupling of the chemotherapeutic drug gemcitabine (GEM), a first-line agent for cancer therapy and α-lipoic acid (LA), a potent antioxidant.

Crocin, a main constituent of Crocus sativus L (saffron), has been found to inhibit the growth of K-562 human chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) cells expressing Bcr-Abl protein tyrosine kinase activity. The aim of our study is to investigate the ability of the bioactive saffron's constituents, crocin (CRC) and safranal (SFR), to inhibit the Bcr-Abl protein activity employing an in silico approach, as well as the in vitro effect of these compounds on K-562 growth and gene expression of Bcr-Abl. In silico molecular docking studies revealed that mostly SFR can be attached to Bcr-Abl protein, positioned inside the protein's binding cavity at the same place with the drug used in the treatment of CML, imatinib mesylate (IM).

Although a firm association between fertility treatment and thyroid cancer has not been established, the widespread use of IVF, as a substantial reservoir of subclinical thyroid cancer disease and evidence suggesting an estrogen-dependent behavior may render thyroid cancer patients after IVF a distinct subpopulation of particular interest. Thus, a retrospective, non-consecutive case-series analysis of patients with history of thyroid cancer after in vitro fertilization was conducted. Twelve female patients with thyroid cancer who had previously undergone IVF treatment were identified within the cohort of thyroid cancer patients followed in our institution.

A major part of the wineries' wastes is composed of grape stems which are discarded mainly in open fields and cause environmental problems due mainly to their high polyphenolic content. The grape stem extracts' use as a source of high added value polyphenols presents great interest because this combines a profitable venture with environmental protection close to wine-producing zones. In the present study, at first, the Total Polyphenolic Content (TPC) and the polyphenolic composition of grape stem extracts from four different Greek Vitis vinifera varieties were determined by HPLC methods.

Background/aim: Residual or recurrent medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) after thyroidectomy is diagnosed by elevated serum calcitonin (CT) levels. However, in minimal residual MTC or C-cell hyperplasia (CCH), where imaging studies are often negative, basal CT levels are frequently normal and CT stimulation tests are required. We aimed to compare CT stimulation tests with calcium, pentagastrin and their combination in identifying minimal residual MTC and CCH.

The incidence of thyroid cancer has been rising over the past few decades along with a parallel increase in obesity. Observational studies have provided evidence for a potential association between the two. By contrast, clinical data for a link between type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition strongly associated with obesity, and thyroid cancer are limited and largely not supportive of such an association.
