Targeted in ovo green light (GL) photostimulation during the last days of broiler egg incubation increases embryonic expression of the somatotropic axis, similar to in ovo green light photostimulation from embryonic day (ED) 0 to the end of incubation. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of selected in ovo GL photostimulation periods on post-hatch broiler growth. Four hundred twenty fertile broiler eggs were divided into 7 treatment groups: the first incubated in the dark (standard conditions) as a negative control; the second incubated under monochromatic GL from ED0-ED20 (positive control); the third group incubated under monochromatic GL light from ED15-ED20; the fourth, fifth and sixth groups were incubated under monochromatic GL on ED16, ED17, and ED18, respectively; and the seventh group was incubated under monochromatic GL from ED18-ED20.

The hypocotyls of germinating seedlings elongate in a search for light to enable autotrophic sugar production. Upon exposure to light, photoreceptors that are activated by blue and red light halt elongation by preventing the degradation of the hypocotyl-elongation inhibitor HY5 and by inhibiting the activity of the elongation-promoting transcription factors PIFs. The question of how sugar affects hypocotyl elongation and which cell types stimulate and stop that elongation remains unresolved.

Yearling weight gain in male and female Israeli Holstein calves, defined as 365 × ((weight - 35)/age at weight) + 35, was analyzed from 814,729 records on 368,255 animals from 740 herds recorded between 1994 and 2021. The variance components were calculated based on valid records from 2008 through 2017 for each sex separately and both sexes jointly by a single-trait individual animal model analysis, which accounted for repeat records on animals. The analysis model also included the square root, linear, and quadratic effects of age at weight.

Pepper crops in Israel are infected by poleroviruses, Pepper vein yellows virus 2 (PeVYV-2) and Pepper whitefly-borne vein yellows virus (PeWBVYV). Herein we characterize the transmission of PeWBVYV and the aphid-transmitted PeVYV-2, and show that PeWBVYV is specifically transmitted by MEAM1 species of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, with a minimum latency period of 120 h, and not by the Mediterranean (MED). PeWBVYV and PeVYV-2 were detected in the hemolymph of MED and MEAM1, respectively, however, amounts of PeWBVYV in the hemolymph of MED or PeVYV-2 in MEAM1 were much lower than PeWBVYV in hemolymph of MEAM1.

Two synthetic approaches were explored for modification of the polyolefins polyethylene/polypropylene (PE/PP) to form contact-active nonwoven materials. In the first approach, polymer surfaces were activated by O-free air-ozonolysis, and then the active agent (trimethoxysilyl) propyl-octadecyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride (C18-TSA) was covalently bound. In the second approach, the active agent was directly conjugated to the commercial 'finishing' that was then applied to the polymer.

Underground heterosis for yield improvement in melon.

Heterosis, the superiority of hybrids over their parents, is a major genetic force associated with plant fitness and crop yield enhancement. We investigated root-mediated yield heterosis in melons (Cucumis melo) by characterizing a common variety grafted onto 190 hybrid rootstocks, resulting from crossing 20 diverse inbreds in a diallel-mating scheme. Hybrid rootstocks improved yield by more than 40% compared with their parents, and the best hybrid yield outperformed the reference commercial variety by 65% under both optimal and minimal irrigation treatments.

Reducing nitrate leaching from agricultural land to aquifers has been a high priority concern for more than a half century. This study presents theory and observations of a threshold concentration of nitrate in the root zone (Cmax), which the leachate concentration increases at higher rates with increasing root-zone nitrate concentration. The value of Cmax is derived both by direct results from container experiments with varying nitrogen (N) fertigation and as a calibration parameter in N-transport models beneath commercial agricultural plots.

In the present study, the ZT1-ZT6 transgenic tomato lines having gene under the regulatory control of the stress inducible promoter were exposed to three salinity levels (50, 100 and 200 mM) at the four leaf stage for 10 days. The transgenic lines showed improved growth in stem height, leaf area, root length and shoot length under saline conditions, as compared to control.
