Article Synopsis
  • - Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a serious disease that can be detected early using colonoscopy, but identifying polyps visually can be challenging due to varying lighting conditions.
  • - The article introduces a new technique called Enhanced Scattering Wavelet Convolutional Neural Network (ESWCNN) which combines CNN and Scattering Wavelet Transform to improve the accuracy of polyp classification.
  • - ESWCNN achieved impressive results with 96.4% accuracy in classifying three types of polyps and 94.8% accuracy in a two-class scenario, showing it outperforms traditional CNN models in identifying different polyp types.

Nomogram-based prognostic tool for stage IIIB/IV non-small cell lung cancer patients undergoing traditional Chinese medicine treatment.

Heliyon

May 2024

Department of Oncology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Objective: Given the significant impact of long-term traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment on the prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we aimed to develop nomograms, with or without consideration of TCM treatment duration, to accurately predict the overall survival (OS) of patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC treated with TCM.

Methods: Nomograms were developed from a training cohort comprised of 292 patients diagnosed with NSCLC, using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses to screen for various prognostic factors with and without TCM treatment. The nomograms were evaluated using the concordance index (-index), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA), after which they were validated, using the bootstrap self-sampling method for internal validation, and a validation cohort comprised of 175 patients for external validation.

Background: Impaired visual mental imagery is an important symptom of depression and has gradually become an intervention target for cognitive behavioral therapy.

Methods: Our study involved a total of 25 healthy controls (HC) and 23 individuals with moderate depressive symptoms (MD). This study explored the attentional mechanism supporting visual mental imagery impairments in depression using the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ), attentional network test (ANT), and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI).

Objective: To explore the potential of pre-therapy computed tomography (CT) parameters in predicting the treatment response to initial conventional TACE (cTACE) in intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and develop an interpretable machine learning model.

Methods: This retrospective study included 367 patients with intermediate-stage HCC who received cTACE as first-line therapy from three centers. We measured the mean attenuation values of target lesions on multi-phase contrast-enhanced CT and further calculated three CT parameters, including arterial (AER), portal venous (PER), and arterial portal venous (APR) enhancement ratios.

Background: Rotator cuff injury is a common orthopedic disease with high morbidity, which is one of the most important reasons for shoulder pain and limited movement. With the development of more research, the Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) therapy for rotator cuff injury is increasingly rich, and has achieved a good curative effect.

Method: TCM has certain characteristics and advantages, which may become the main development trend of the treatment.

Regression of a large prolapsed lumbar disc herniation achieved by conservative treatment: A case report and literature review.

Heliyon

September 2023

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, 510120, China.

A common spinal condition known as lumbar disc herniation (LDH) can result in radicular and low back discomfort. A 27-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 6-year history of persistent low back pain, and his low back pain had recurred with radiation to his lower extremities over the last two months. An extensive right-sided paracentral disc herniation in the L5/S1 intervertebral region, which compressed the nerve root, was discovered by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of his lumbar spine.

A biomechanical investigation of a novel intramedullary nail used to salvage failed internal fixations in intertrochanteric fractures.

J Orthop Surg Res

August 2023

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine), Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, 510120, China.

Purpose: The ideal approach for revision surgery following femoral head salvage treatments for an intertrochanteric fracture is still up for debate. A novel variety of proximal femoral bionic intramedullary nail (PFBN) has been created in clinical practice. We aimed to compare the biomechanical results of the novel implant to conventional intramedullary and extramedullary fixation in the treatment of intertrochanteric fracture following primary internal fixation failure.

Objective: The aim of this study was the development of an accurate and quantitative pyrosequence (PSQ) method for paternal RHD zygosity detection to help risk management of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).

Methods: Blood samples from 96 individuals were genotyped for RHD zygosity using pyrosequencing assay. To validate the accuracy of pyrosequencing results, all the samples were then detected by the mismatch polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP) method and Sanger DNA sequencing.

  • A study was conducted to assess how propofol sedation affects sleep quality after gastrointestinal endoscopy in 880 patients.
  • The researchers measured sleep quality using specific scores before and after the procedure, finding a significant decline in sleep quality for those who received sedation in the short term (1-7 days post-GE).
  • By 3 weeks post-procedure, sleep quality for both the sedation and control groups returned to baseline levels, indicating no long-term effects from the sedation.

Background: Inflammation and immune cell infiltration in infarcted myocardial tissue are critical to myocardial infarction (MI) prognosis, and alterations in sphingolipid metabolism (SM) have been shown to potentially influence the inflammatory response and induce cardioprotection, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We therefore performed bioinformatics analysis to screen for key genes of SM in MI immune cells.

Methods: Three matrix files including GSE61145, GSE23294, and GSE71906 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database.
