World J Surg Oncol

December 2024

Department of Breast Surgery, Henan Provincial People's Hospital, Zhengzhou University People's Hospital, No.7 Weiwu Road, Zhengzhou, Henan, 450003, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how high glutathione (GSH) intake affects chemotherapy sensitivity in breast cancer patients.
  • Clinicopathological data from 460 patients were analyzed, revealing a higher recurrence rate in those with excessive GSH intake compared to those who did not take GSH.
  • Findings suggest that high GSH intake, along with other factors, may lead to increased chemotherapy resistance, emphasizing the need for standardized GSH consumption to improve treatment outcomes.

Esophageal cancer is a major malignancy with a high incidence and poor prognosis. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying its progression, particularly with respect to cell division and spindle orientation, we investigated the role of m6A modifications and the centrosomal protein CEP170. Using m6A-seq and RNA-seq of esophageal cancer tissues and adjacent normal tissues, we identified significant alterations in m6A modifications and gene expression, highlighting the upregulation and m6A enrichment of CEP170 in tumor tissues.

Objective: The primary methods for defining the prognostic risk of AML patients are cytogenetic and molecular analysis at the time of diagnosis. However, the prognosis of intermediate-risk patients is still not well assessed for biomarkers. The main objective of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the relationship between circRNAs and AML prognosis, to provide a theoretical basis for finding effective prognostic indicators in intermediate-risk patients, and to provide an important scientific basis for the development or revision of WHO practice guidelines and ELN risk classification, and to highlight the importance of continuing to focus on and evaluate the prognostic impact of circRNAs on AML in future studies.

Institute of Stomatology & Research Center of Dental and Craniofacial Implants, School and Hospital of Stomatology, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study develops a radiomics-based model using MRI data to grade the pathological differentiation of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients.
  • It analyzes data from 256 patients, employing an XGBoost classifier to predict outcomes based on various MRI sequences, particularly contrast-enhanced T1-weighted and T2-weighted images.
  • The findings indicate that combining these MRI sequences improves model performance, with high accuracy in predicting cancer differentiation, showcasing a promising non-invasive method for preoperative diagnosis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors, with the characteristics of high mortality and low 5-year survival rate. The potential role of BTF3 and PDCD2L in HCC remains unclear. Our study found that BTF3 expression was upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, and its high expression was associated with poor prognosis.

The occurrence of severe myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is associated with the clinical application of reestablishment technique for heart disease, and understanding its underlying mechanisms is currently an urgent issue. Prior investigations have demonstrated the potential enhancement of MIRI through EGR1 suppression, although the precise underlying regulatory pathways require further elucidation. The core focus of this investigation is to examine the molecular pathways through EGR1 regulates mitophagy-mediated myocardial cell pyroptosis and its impact on MIRI.

In recent years, targeting mitochondrial apoptosis has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). The SLC25 family of mitochondrial carriers plays a critical role in maintaining mitochondrial function and regulating apoptosis. However, the role of SLC25A21, an oxodicarboxylate carrier, in AML progression and its potential as a prognostic biomarker remain underexplored.

Background: Anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) antibody combined with chemotherapy simultaneously is regarded as the standard treatment for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by current clinical guidelines. Different immune statuses induced by chemotherapy considerably affect the synergistic effects of the chemo-anti-PD-1 combination. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the optimal timing of combination treatment administration.

Background: Evidence has firmly established the association between superior cardiovascular health (CVH) and reduced susceptibility to cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). In reality, CVH experiences dynamic fluctuations throughout individuals' lifespans. However, the association between changes in CVH and the impact on CMDs among individuals with different genetic risks remains unclear.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant bone tumor, characterized by a high propensity for metastasis. Recent studies have highlighted the role of alternative splicing in cancer metastasis, although the precise mechanisms underlying aberrant splicing in OS invasion and metastasis remain unclear. Here, we analyzed consistently differentially expressed genes and differentially alternative splicing events between primary and metastatic OS to identify potential genes associated with OS progression.

  • The circadian clock regulates human biological processes over a 24-hour cycle, affecting conditions like low back pain (LBP) linked to intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD).
  • Intervertebral discs demonstrate rhythmic behaviors in osmotic pressure and hydration that align with daily activity patterns, indicating a connection between circadian rhythm and IVDD.
  • Recent research suggests that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) plays a crucial role in this relationship, leading to the idea of using chronotherapy as a novel treatment approach for IVDD and LBP.

3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; Ecstasy) is a widely abused recreational drug that has also gained interest for potential clinical applications in mental health. With the growing recognition of gut microbiota's role in mental health, this study examined whether repeated oral MDMA administration could affect gut microbiota in the small intestine, cecum, and colon of male rats. Repeated oral MDMA administration (10 mg/kg/day for 14 days) caused significant changes in the gut microbiota across these regions, with distinct effects observed in each.

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Experimental Orthopaedics, Centre for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB/Biopark 1), University of Regensburg, Germany; Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Asklepiosklinikum, Bad Abbach, Germany.

Extracellular vesicles from Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) derived synovial fibroblasts (EVs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of RA, acting as mediators of cell-to-cell communication. This study aimed to elucidate the role of the chemokine receptor CCR5 and EVs positive for CCR5 (EVs) in RA, focusing on their impact on cartilage destruction and bone erosion in a rat model of Adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA). In vivo experiments were conducted using AIA rats, treated with either EVs, EVs without CCR5 (EVs), or EVs which encapsulated the CCR5 antagonist Maraviroc.

Tumor therapy has historically been a global research focus, with phototherapy garnered significant attention as a innovative treatment modality. However, the antioxidant defense system in the tumor microenvironment, characterized by excessive glutathione (GSH) and thiol-containing proteins, often limits the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy. In this study, we report the development of a new multifunctional integrated nanozyme with thioredoxin reductase-oxidase (TrxRox) and GSH-oxidase (GSHox)-like activities.
