KIF18B is a key member of the kinesin-8 family, involved in regulating various physiological processes such as microtubule length, spindle assembly, and chromosome alignment. This article briefly introduces the structure and physiological functions of KIF18B, examines its role in malignant tumors, and the associated carcinogenic signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT, Wnt/β-catenin, and mTOR pathways. Research indicates that the upregulation of KIF18B enhances tumor malignancy and resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Key Laboratory of Basic Pharmacology of Ministry of Education and Joint International Research Laboratory of Ethnomedicine of Ministry of Education, Zunyi Medical University, Zunyi, Guizhou 563000, P.R. China.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a chronic and fatal disease characterized by pulmonary vascular remodeling, similar to the 'Warburg effect' observed in cancer, which is caused by reprogramming of glucose metabolism. Oroxylin A (OA), an active compound derived from , which can inhibit glycolytic enzymes [hexokinase 2 (HK2), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1 (PDK1) by downregulating aerobic glycolysis to achieve the treatment of liver cancer. To the best of our knowledge, however, the impact of OA on PAH has not been addressed.

Article Synopsis
  • Motor neuron disease (MND), specifically amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder linked to immune responses involving cells like monocytes/macrophages and T cells.
  • A 56-year-old male was diagnosed with ALS after experiencing progressive limb weakness and sensory issues, alongside a proposed diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome when he reported dry mouth and a bitter taste.
  • The study suggests incorporating Sjögren's syndrome screening in ALS evaluations and emphasizes the need for further research into the immune mechanisms underlying both conditions for better diagnosis and treatment options.

Ferroptosis represents a distinct form of cell death that is not associated with necrosis, autophagy, apoptosis, or pyroptosis. It is characterised by intracellular iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. The current literature indicates that a number of botanical drugs and isolated metabolites can modulate ferroptosis, thereby exerting inhibitory effects on lung cancer cells or animal models.

Background: Small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) is highly susceptible to metastasis in the early stages of the disease. However, the stomach is an uncommon site of metastasis in SCLC, and only a few cases of this type of metastasis have been reported. Therefore, SCLC gastric metastases have not been systematically characterized and are easily missed and misdiagnosed.

Radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) with bladder sleeve resection is currently the gold standard for the treatment of high-risk ureteral cancer. However, in certain special cases, such as bilateral upper tract urothelial carcinoma(UTUC), isolated and chronic kidney disease, and low-risk UTUC, kidney sparing surgery(KSS) may represent a viable alternative, though it remains highly challenging. The current KSS options for ureteral cancer include endoscopic treatment, segmental ureterectomy, total ureterectomy combined with kidney autotransplantation and nephrostomy.

Key Laboratory of Basic Pharmacology of Ministry of Education and Joint International Research Laboratory of Ethnomedicine of Ministry of Education, Zunyi Medical University, Zunyi 563000, China.

Trilobatin, a novel natural food additive, exerts a protective effect on acute liver injury. However, whether Trilobatin can protect against alcoholic liver disease (ALD) has not been elucidated. This research is intended to ascertain the impact of Trilobatin on ALD in mice and decipher the potential underlying mechanisms.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term consequences on the cervical spine after Anterior transcorporeal percutaneous endoscopy cervical discectomy (ATc-PECD) from the biomechanical standpoint.

Methods: A three-dimensional model of the normal cervical spine C2-T1 was established using finite element method. Subsequently, a disc degeneration model and degeneration with surgery model were constructed on the basis of the normal model.

Background: Severe bleeding as a result of a major vascular injury is a potentially fatal event commonly observed in the emergency department. Bowel necrosis and gastric ulcers secondary to ischemia are rare due to their rich blood supply. In this case, we present the case of a patient who was treated successfully following rupture of his femoral artery resulting in bowel necrosis and an unusually large gastric ulcer.

BMC Ophthalmol

July 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, No.1, Shuaifuyuan Wangfujing Dongcheng District, Beijing, 100730, China.

Background: Addressing presbyopia in the aging population, particularly in non-cataractous patients, remains a challenge. This study evaluates the outcomes of refractive lens exchange (RLE) with AT LISA tri 839MP trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in a Chinese presbyopic population without cataracts.

Methods: The study included 164 eyes from 82 patients undergoing bilateral RLE at Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

Objectives: To explore the interrelationships between structural and functional changes as well as the potential neurotransmitter profile alterations in drug-naïve benign childhood epilepsy with central-temporal spikes (BECTS) patients.

Methods: Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) and resting-state functional MRI data from 20 drug-naïve BECTS patients and 33 healthy controls (HCs) were acquired. Parallel independent component analysis (P-ICA) was used to identify covarying components among gray matter volume (GMV) maps and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) maps.

  • Rectal cavernous hemangioma is a rare, benign condition causing lower gastrointestinal bleeding, often misdiagnosed, with surgical treatment typically being effective but more invasive.
  • A case study of a 60-year-old male showed he had recurrent bleeding for over a year, and after several diagnostic tests, he was diagnosed with a rectal cavernous hemangioma.
  • The patient declined surgery and underwent endoscopic foam sclerotherapy, which successfully stopped his bleeding and nearly eliminated the hemangioma, indicating that this method is a safe and effective alternative treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study assessed white-to-white (WTW) measurements before implanting the V4c lens in 930 myopia patients, using tools like triple caliper, IOL-Master 700, Pentacam HR, and UBM to evaluate their effectiveness and correlation with ICL vaulting.
  • - WTW values were found to vary slightly between the measuring devices, with the highest correlation noted between IOL-Master 700 and Pentacam HR, while the lowest was between UBM and Pentacam HR.
  • - The results indicated that triple person-times caliper measurements are reliable and practical for determining WTW, which plays a crucial role in selecting the appropriate size for the intraocular lens implant.
