Article Synopsis
  • Aberrant ubiquitin modifications from imbalanced ubiquitinases and de-ubiquitinases are linked to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) progression, with the enzyme USP15 identified as a possible therapeutic target.
  • The study found that USP15 is overexpressed in NSCLC tissues and knocking it down in cell lines significantly reduced cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.
  • High levels of USP15 and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP3 and MMP9) in NSCLC correlate with poor patient prognosis, suggesting that targeting USP15 and MMPs could serve as new biomarkers for cancer progression.

Background: Mitochondrial fusion and fission were identified to play key roles during multiple biology process. Thus, we aim to investigate the roles of OPA1 in mitochondria fusion and immune evasion of non-small cell lung cancer cells.

Methods: The transcriptional activation of genes related to mitochondrial dynamics was determined by using multi-omics data in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).

Due to its non-invasive and highly effective characteristics, radiotherapy has attracted significant interest in cancer treatment. However, radioresistance of solid tumors caused by a unique tumor microenvironment diminishes the therapeutic effect of cancer radiotherapy. To address this issue, we developed a nanoplatform for tumor-specific targeting to improve radiotherapy.

CD46, CD55 and CD59 are membrane-bound complement regulatory proteins (mCRPs) and highly expressed in many tumor tissues. Our analysis by RNA sequencing and qRT-PCR revealed that the expression of mCRPs was significantly elevated in cancer tissues of 15 patients with colon cancer. To further investigate the role of mCRPs in the development of colon cancer, we suppressed the expression of mCRPs by CD46-shRNA, CD55-shRNA and CD59-shRNA in colon cancer cell lines, SW620 and HT-29 cells.

Background: Dysregulation of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) still greatly challenges the treatments for bladder cancer (BC), where exosomal miRNAs derived from CAFs are one of the essential effectors for tumor progression. miR-93-5p is reported to be upregulated in BC, however, it is barely investigated in BC-derived CAFs.

Method: The CAF markers were immunofluorescent-labeled and examined by western blotting assay in CAFs and normal fibroblasts (NFs).

Background: Even after complete surgical treatment or chemotherapy, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients are also at substantial risk for recurrence and spread trend. Therapeutic cancer vaccination could increase the anti-tumor immune response and prevent tumor relapse. This study aimed to assess the characteristics of NSCLC therapeutic vaccines registered on ClinicalTrials.

Self-management of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) is characterized by complexity and diversity of content. Inadequate self-management exposes patients to the risk for complications such as stroke and bleeding. To assess the status and predictors of self-management in NVAF patients, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted.

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which lipids and inflammatory factors accumulate on the walls of arteries, forming plaques that eventually block the flow of blood. Polydatin was derived from plant knotweed, which could play an important role in inhibiting the progression of atherosclerosis. However, the mechanism by which polydatin regulates the genesis and development of atherosclerosis remains unclear.

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Yancheng Third People's Hospital, The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, The Yancheng School of Clinical Medicine of Nanjing Medical University, 2 Xindu West Road, Yancheng, 224000, Jiangsu, China.

Objective: To investigate the effect and clinical significance of different thoracic surgical approaches for patients with stage IIB-IVA esophageal squamous cell carcinoma on the survival and prognosis of postoperative radiotherapy patients.

Methods: One hundred thirty-two patients with stage IIB-IVA esophageal squamous cancer who received radiotherapy after surgery were screened for baseline characteristics and survival analysis. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to draw the survival curve for the follow-up data, and the log-rank test was used to compare the difference in survival rate between the two groups.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the primary causes of cirrhosis and a major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma and liver-related death. It has been correlated with changes in the gut microbiota, which promote its development by regulating insulin resistance, bile acid and choline metabolism, and inflammation. Recent studies suggested a controversial role of the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) in the development of NAFLD.

To clarify the potential role of selenium (Se) on cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, we utilized mouse middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) followed by reperfusion as an animal model and oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/R) to treat N2a cells as a cell model, respectively. MCAO model was established in mice and then divided into different groups with or without Se treatment. TTC staining was used to observe whether the cerebral I/R modeling was successful, and the apoptosis level was determined by TUNEL staining.

Genetic variants in choline metabolism pathway are associated with the risk of bladder cancer in the Chinese population.

Arch Toxicol

June 2022

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Cancer Biomarkers, Prevention and Treatment, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Personalized Medicine, China International Cooperation Center for Environment and Human Health, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Choline metabolism alteration is considered as a metabolic hallmark in cancer, reflecting the complex interactions between carcinogenic signaling pathways and cancer metabolism, but little is known about whether genetic variants in the metabolism pathway contribute to the susceptibility of bladder cancer. Herein, a case-control study comprising 580 patients and 1,101 controls was carried out to analyze the association of bladder cancer with genetic variants on candidate genes involved in the choline metabolism pathway using unconditional logistic regression. Gene expression data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database were applied for differential gene expression analysis.

This study aimed to explore whether liquiritin affects the development of coronary heart disease by regulating the proliferation and migration of human vascular smooth muscle cells (hVSMCs). A 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2 H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release detection were performed to measure the toxic effects of liquiritin on hVSMCs. An atherosclerosis model in hVSMCs was established using oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), and cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected using an MTT assay and flow cytometry analysis.
