Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Affiliated Hospital 6 of Nantong University, The Yancheng School of Clinical Medicine of Nanjing Medical University, Yancheng Third People's Hospital, Yancheng, 224000, People's Republic of China.

UBE2C (Ubiquitination-binding enzyme 2C), one of the E2 enzymes encoded in the human genome, is a component of the ubiquitin proteasome system and plays a pivotal role in regulating cell cycle progression. Moreover, UBE2C is highly expressed and may play a pivotal role in both high-incidence and high-mortality malignancies, including lung cancers, breast cancers, and esophageal cancers. UBE2C influences a number of key processes, including cell cycle progression, tumor invasion and metastasis, proliferation, and drug resistance.

Combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA) is a unique subtype of primary liver cancer displaying both hepatocytic and cholangiocytic differentiation. The development of effective treatments for cHCC-CCA remains challenging because of its high heterogeneity and lack of a suitable model system. Using a three-dimensional culture system, we successfully established two novel cHCC-CCA organoid lines from patients undergoing surgical resection for primary liver cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The review discusses how intermittent fasting (IF) and fasting-mimicking diets (FMD) can slow down tumor growth by affecting key cellular signaling pathways, such as AKT, Nrf2, and AMPK.
  • IF and FMD may boost the immune response to tumors by influencing various immune cells, including T cells and macrophages, potentially improving cancer treatment outcomes.
  • Clinical trials suggest that IF and FMD are safe and can enhance the effectiveness of traditional cancer therapies while reducing side effects, leading to better overall quality of life for patients.

  • Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a significant problem following liver surgeries and affects patient outcomes; the role of spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) in this process is not well understood.
  • This study shows that SYK is activated during hepatic IRI, leading to increased neutrophil activity and inflammation, which worsens liver damage and encourages tumor recurrence.
  • The findings suggest that targeting SYK might be a promising approach to mitigate hepatic IRI and reduce the risk of tumor recurrence after liver surgery.

Personalized SO Prodrug for pH-Triggered Gas Enhancement in Anti-Tumor Radio-Immunotherapy.

Pharmaceutics

June 2024

The Yancheng School of Clinical Medicine of Nanjing Medical University, Yancheng Third People's Hospital, Yancheng 224051, China.

The inhibition of the immune response in the tumor microenvironment by therapy regimens can impede the eradication of tumors, potentially resulting in tumor metastasis. As a non-invasive therapeutic method, radiotherapy is utilized for tumor ablation. In this study, we aimed to improve the therapeutic impact of radiotherapy and trigger an immune response by formulating a benzothiazole sulfinate (BTS)-loaded fusion liposome (BFL) nanoplatform, which was then combined with radiotherapy for anti-cancer treatment.

Departments of Environmental Genomics and Genetic Toxicology, The Key Laboratory of Modern Toxicology of Ministry of Education, Center for Global Health, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Cancer Biomarkers, Prevention and Treatment, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Personalized Medicine, School of Public Health; Institute of Clinical Research, The Affiliated Taizhou People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University; Department of Urology, The Yancheng School of Clinical Medicine of Nanjing Medical University (The Third People's Hospital of Yancheng), Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, 211166, China.

Tobacco carcinogens metabolism-related genes (TCMGs) could generate reactive metabolites of tobacco carcinogens, which subsequently contributed to multiple diseases. However, the association between genetic variants in TCMGs and bladder cancer susceptibility remains unclear. In this study, we derived TCMGs from metabolic pathways of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and tobacco-specific nitrosamines, and then explored genetic associations between TCMGs and bladder cancer risk in two populations: a Chinese population of 580 cases and 1101 controls, and a European population of 5930 cases and 5468 controls, along with interaction and joint analyses.
