Unlabelled: Adaptation to alternating CO concentrations is crucial for all organisms. Carbonic anhydrases-metalloenzymes that have been found in all domains of life-enable fixation of scarce CO by accelerating its conversion to bicarbonate and ensure maintenance of cellular metabolism. In fungi and other eukaryotes, the carbonic anhydrase Nce103 has been shown to be essential for growth in air (~0.

Laryngopharyngeal malignancy is treated with radiotherapy and/or surgery. When total laryngectomy is required, major laryngeal functions (phonation, airway control, swallowing and coughing) are affected. The insertion of a silicone rubber voice prosthesis in a surgically created tracheoesophageal puncture is the most effective method for voice rehabilitation.

Background: Panton-Valentine leucocidin-positive meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (PVL-MRSA) has become a globally common cause of community-acquired infections.
Aim: We report an outbreak of PVL-MRSA in a regional neonatal unit in the UK involving three babies and three staff members.
Methods: Quinolone susceptibility was helpful in identifying potential PVL-MRSA but toxin gene profiling and sequence-based typing were required to distinguish between two PVL-MRSA strains present in the unit.

The use of commercially available cryogenic vials (Microbank vials) stored at -70 degrees C for the storage and preservation of dermatophyte fungi was investigated. None of the 200 strains of dermatophytes examined, representing 21 species, showed a loss of viability after they had been stored for periods ranging from 1 week to 2 years at -70 degrees C. All strains showed typical colonial and microscopic morphologies following revival.

There is a consensus that open-access breast imaging for general practitioners is inappropriate since the process omits an expert clinical examination and fine needle aspiration cytology. However, it was decided to test this hypothesis by comparing the outcome of breast referrals in a district with both an open-access imaging and a one-stop clinic. The time from referral to definitive diagnosis in all women with breast cancer was compared over a 12 month period in 1996.

Delay in the diagnosis of breast cancer is an important cause of medical malpractice claims which if trends continue, will threaten healthcare budgets. Most malpractice claims are made by younger women. Delay is most frequently due to the physician failing to be impressed with the clinical findings, or to a false negative mammogram report.

Obesity, height and age at menarche have been shown to be risk factors for the development of primary breast cancer. However, their prognostic influence on breast cancer once it has presented is uncertain. The present study analysed 448 patients with primary breast cancer to determine whether or not body mass index (BMI), height and cumulative menstrual cycles at diagnosis are independent prognostic variables.

Aims And Objectives: The aim of this paper is to explore the stroke literature, with particular emphasis on the management of psycho-social issues during and in the aftermath of stroke rehabilitation. Within the literature, there are a number of studies that indicate that the present 'medical/physical' approach to stroke rehabilitation may not be achieving desirable long-term psycho-social outcomes and these are considered. The studies highlight the potential effect of the human emotional and social aspects of having a stroke upon the physical and mental well-being of the person.
