PENELOP (Paramagnetic Equilibrium vs Nonequilibrium magnetization Enhancement or LOss Perturbation) is the presented nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) approach to identify at once the location of proteins' exposed surface, hindered accessibility, and exchange processes occurring on a μs-ms time scale. In addition to mapping the protein surface accessibility, the application of this method under specific conditions makes it possible to distinguish conformational mobility and chemical exchange processes, thereby providing an alternative to characterization by more demanding techniques (transverse relaxation dispersion, saturation transfer, and high-pressure NMR). Moreover, its high sensitivity enables studying samples at low, physiologically more relevant concentrations.

Inhibitors of viral cell entry based on poly(styrene sulfonate) and its core-shell nanoformulations based on gold nanoparticles are investigated against a panel of viruses, including clinical isolates of SARS-CoV-2. Macromolecular inhibitors are shown to exhibit the highly sought-after broad-spectrum antiviral activity, which covers most analyzed enveloped viruses and all of the variants of concern for SARS-CoV-2 tested. The inhibitory activity is quantified in vitro in appropriate cell culture models and for respiratory viral pathogens (respiratory syncytial virus and SARS-CoV-2) in mice.

However, direct empirical support for this tenet is limited, in part because traditional quantitative genetic approaches allow dominance and intermediate-frequency polymorphisms to obscure the effects of the many rare and partially recessive deleterious alleles that make up the main part of a population's mutation load. Here, we exposed the partially recessive genetic load of a population of seed beetles via successive generations of inbreeding, and quantified its effects by measuring heterosis-the increase in fitness experienced when masking the effects of deleterious alleles by heterozygosity-in a fully factorial sex-specific diallel cross among 16 inbred strains.

Socioscientific issues (SSI) concern social issues, often lacking simple solutions, that relate to science and often also risk controversies. SSIs have become an established part of science education, aiming to teach students not only about content knowledge but also about the nature of science and to offer them practice in argumentation and decision making. We performed a scoping review of the literature on SSI in science education research, in order to investigate if the topics covered would lean themselves to education about risk, and if risk is raised in these works.

Nearly half of all cancers are treated with radiotherapy alone or in combination with other treatments, where damage to normal tissues is a limiting factor for the treatment. Radiotherapy-induced adverse health effects, mostly of importance for cancer patients with long-term survival, may appear during or long time after finishing radiotherapy and depend on the patient's radiosensitivity. Currently, there is no assay available that can reliably predict the individual's response to radiotherapy.

During protein quality control, proteotoxic misfolded proteins are recognized by molecular chaperones, ubiquitylated by dedicated quality control ligases and delivered to the 26S proteasome for degradation. Proteins belonging to the Hsp70 chaperone and Hsp110 (the Hsp70 nucleotide exchange factor) families function in the degradation of misfolded proteins by the ubiquitin-proteasome system via poorly understood mechanisms. Here, we report that the Hsp110 proteins (Sse1 and Sse2) function in the degradation of Hsp70-associated ubiquitin conjugates at the post-ubiquitylation step and are also required for ubiquitin-independent proteasomal degradation.

A recently isolated phage, vB_EcoP_SU10 (SU10), with the unusual elongated C3 morphotype, can infect a wide range of Escherichia coli strains. We have sequenced the genome of this phage and characterized it further by mass spectrometry based proteomics, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and ultra-thin section electron microscopy. The genome size is 77,327 base pairs and its genes, and genome architecture, show high similarity to the phiEco32 phage genes and genome.
