Aims: We analyzed the impact of frailty on readmission rates for ST-elevated myocardial infarctions (STEMIs) and the utilization of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in STEMI admissions.

Over the past decade, percutaneous left ventricular assist devices (pLVAD), such as the Impella microaxial flow pump (Abiomed), have been increasingly used to provide haemodynamic support during complex and high-risk revascularisation procedures to reduce the risk of intraprocedural haemodynamic compromise and to facilitate complete and optimal revascularisation. A global consensus on patient selection for the use of pLVADs, however, is currently lacking. Access to these devices is different across the world, thus, individual health care environments need to create and refine patient selection paradigms to optimise the use of these devices.

Ultrasound is the hallmark imaging modality traditionally used by obstetricians for fetal diagnosis and surveillance. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the role of point of care ultrasound for expeditious assessment of the maternal cardiopulmonary status. The familiarity of obstetricians with ultrasound, coupled with the availability of ultrasound equipment without the need to transport the patient, make point of care ultrasound particularly valuable in the labor and delivery unit.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has been associated with a plethora of symptoms weeks after the acute infection. While many reports have investigated the novel syndrome of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, fewer studies have examined post-COVID-19 secondary infections, which may be distinct from typical post-viral bacterial infections due to the multiorgan involvement of COVID-19. This case report aims to highlight a presentation in which a 65-year-old man had COVID-19 and subsequently developed methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) bacteremia with widespread seeding of secondary infections, including abscesses in the hand and paravertebral regions as well as discitis/osteomyelitis of the cervical spine.

This article aims to provide guidance to health care workers for the provision of basic and advanced life support to children and neonates with suspected or confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). It aligns with the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular care while providing strategies for reducing risk of transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 to health care providers. Patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 and cardiac arrest should receive chest compressions and defibrillation, when indicated, as soon as possible.

Management of patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and severe mitral annular calcification can be challenging. Our cases highlight the importance of addressing all elements contributing to left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in cases of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy: hypertrophic basal interventricular septum, abnormal papillary muscles, and systolic anterior motion of the anterior mitral valve leaflet. Addressing mitral valve repair through aortotomy by performing a septal myectomy, papillary muscle realignment, and resection of aberrant chordae tendineae allows left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and systolic anterior motion to be successfully corrected.
