Should we continue to measure endometrial thickness in modern-day medicine? The effect on live birth rates and birth weight.

Reprod Biomed Online

April 2018

Centre for Reproductive Medicine, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Laarbeeklaan 101, Brussels 1090, Belgium; Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine of the University of Zagreb, Šalata 3, Zagreb 10000, Croatia.

The evaluation of endometrial thickness (EMT) is still part of standard cycle monitoring during IVF, despite the lack of robust evidence of any value of this measurement to predict little revalidation in contemporary medical practice; other tools, however, such as endocrine profile monitoring, have become increasingly popular. The aim of this study was to reassess whether EMT affects the outcome of a fresh embryo transfer in modern-day medicine, using a retrospective, single-centre cohort of 3350 IVF cycles (2827 women) carried out between 2010 and 2014. In the multivariate regression analysis, EMT was non-linearly associated with live birth, with live birth rates being the lowest with an EMT less than 7.

Naturally-occurring highly-complexed and polymerised organics such as humic acids (HA), due to their large negative charge, play a crucial role in biogeochemistry of trace metals (TM). Toxic (Cd) as well as essential (Zn, Cu, Mn) TM bind strongly to HA, but how these organo-metalic forms influence metal uptake by plants is poorly understood. A solution culture study was conducted to characterize the effects of different concentrations of HA (0-225mg/L) on the growth and element uptake/distribution in roots, shoots and hypocotyls of radish (Raphanus sativus L.

Background: The incidence of nosocomial infections in children in developed countries is still high, ranging from 8% to 30%, and standard preventive measures, such as increased hygiene, are not sufficiently efficacious. One of the potential strategies for their prevention is the use of probiotics.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the role of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp.

Indicators of dental anxiety in children just prior to treatment.

J Clin Pediatr Dent

February 2015

Department of Pediatric Dentistry, New York University College of Dentistry, New York, New York, USA.

Objectives: We evaluated the relationship between child dental anxiety and selected child and parental characteristics.

Study Design: Children and their parents were interviewed at the New York University, College of Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry Clinic. The Children's Fear Survey Schedule - Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS) evaluated child self-reported anxiety; the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) measured self-reported parental anxiety when the parent received dental treatment.

Eccrine carcinoma in the foot of an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).

J Zoo Wildl Med

December 2013

Zoological Garden of Zagreb, Maksimirski perivoj bb. Zagreb 10000, Croatia.

A case of eccrine carcinoma of the interdigital foot glands in a 39-yr-old female Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) from Zagreb Zoo is described. The tumor between the toenails of the right forefoot was surgically removed 3 yr before postmortem examination (2003), and the histopathologic diagnosis was compound eccrine carcinoma characterized with glandular tubular and papillary proliferations, mild cellular pleomorphism, proliferation of the myoepithelial cells with mucoid secretions, and necrosis. Immunohistochemistry revealed strong immunoreactivity to S-100 protein, estrogen, and high-molecular weight cytokeratin.

Influence of ultrasonic excitation and heat application on the microleakage of glass ionomer cements.

Aust Dent J

December 2012

Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, School of Dental Medicine, The University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of externally applied 'command set' methods on the microleakage of several glass ionomer cements (GICs).

Methods: Four different restorative GICs were cured using three different methods: standard curing (SC), ultrasonic excitation (UC) and by an external heat source (HC). Different conditioning agents (10% polyacrylic and 10% citric acid) were used.

Absolute proton affinity of some polyguanides.

J Org Chem

Quantum Organic Chemistry Group, Rudjer Boskovic Institute, P.O. Box 1016, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia, and Division of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, The University of Zagreb, Marulicev trg 19, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia.

The problem of the absolute proton affinity (APA) of some polyguanides is addressed by the MP2(fc)/6-311+G//HF/6-31G theoretical model. It is shown that the linear chain polyguanides exhibit increased basicity as a function of the number of guanide subunits. However, the saturation effect yields an asymptotic APA value of 254 kcal/mol.

The recurrence of instability after arthroscopic stabilization has been significantly higher than after open repair. One of the reasons for the high failure rate is the inability of arthroscopic repairs to address the plastic deformity of the capsule that occurs in the glenohumeral ligament-labrum complex. The arthroscopic technique is used to repair the torn labrum to the glenoid, but without adequate tightening of the anterior capsule, which is successfully accomplished with an open technique.

Optimal nonsingular control of fed-batch fermentation.

Biotechnol Bioeng

April 1991

Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, The University of Zagreb, 41000 Zagreb, Yugoslavia.

Presented is a new simple method for multidimensional optimization of fed-batch fermentations based on the use of the orthogonal collocation technique. Considered is the problem of determination of optimal programs for fermentor temperature, substrate concentration in feed, feeding profile, and process duration. By reformulation of the state and control variables is obtained a nonsingular form of the optimization problem which has considerable advantage over the singular case since a complicated procedure for determination of switching times for feeding is avoided.
