This paper investigates the biodegradation properties of cellulose fibers and PLA biopolymer. For that purpose, hemp, jute, and sisal fibers as lignocellulose fibers; viscose fibers (CV) as regenerated cellulose; and polylactide (PLA) as biopolymer were buried in farmland soil for periods of 2, 4, 7, 9 and 11 days under controlled conditions. The influence of their biodegradation on the fiber mechanical properties, bacteria and fungi population, as well as on the soil quality were investigated.

Biomass fly ash (BFA) from a biomass cogeneration plant was encapsulated into calcium alginate microspheres (ALG/Ca) and characterized. An FTIR analysis indicated that BFA loading weakened molecular interactions between ALG/Ca constituents (mainly hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions), thus changing the crosslinking density. SEM and AFM analyses revealed a wrinkled and rough surface with elongated and distorted granules.

We present a case report of incidental detection of breast cancer in a female patient referred for 18F-fluorocholine (FCH) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) due to primary hyperparathyroidism. This imaging method was recently shown as more sensitive for the detection of metabolically hyperactive parathyroid glands than neck ultrasound and (2-metoksyizobutyloizonitryl labeled with technetium-99m) [99mTc]MIBI. Increased accumulation of FCH was found in the hyperactive parathyroid gland and unexpectedly in the right breast lesion.

The cases of relapse in papillary thyroid cancer patients who were initially considered low-risk and for many years were without signs of the disease are extremely rare, but exist. This is supported by the clinical case of a patient who underwent a total thyroidectomy due to papillary thyroid cancer and 19 years later metastasis with extracapsular spreading in a presumed thyroid place was revealed. Due to such cases, the importance of long-term ultrasound monitoring is emphasized.

Due to a growing need for the assessment of excessive Internet use and its potentially adverse effects, many Internet addiction assessment instruments have been developed. The aim of the present study was to analyse the factorial structure and psychometric properties of the Croatian version of one of the most commonly used instruments in this area, the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS). Data was collected in Croatia as part of the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) in 2015 with students turning 16 years in the year of data collection (n = 2558).

Nowadays depression is considered as a systemic illness with different biological mechanisms involved in its etiology, including inflammatory response, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation and neurotransmitter and neurotrophic systems imbalance. Novel "omics" approaches, such as metabolomics and glycomics provide information about altered metabolic pathways and metabolites, as well as disturbances in glycosylation processes affected by or causing the development of depression. The clinical diagnosis of depression continues to be established based on the presence of the specific symptoms, but due to its heterogeneous underlying biological background, that differs according to the disease stage, there is an unmet need for treatment response biomarkers which would facilitate the process of appropriate treatment selection.
