Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between gender and marginalization in nursing academia.

Background: Men continue to be significantly underrepresented in nursing academia because they experience numerous barriers to their integration and success in the profession.

Method: A descriptive cross-sectional design was implemented in this pilot study to investigate differences in perceived marginalization between male versus female faculty teaching in Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited colleges.

A test of the (hu)MANid analytical program using a native American population.

Am J Biol Anthropol

September 2023

Department of Anthropology, Global Religions, and Cultures, The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA.

Objectives: Recently, Berg and Kenyhercz (2017) developed a free web-based software package, (hu)MANid, that classifies mandibles by ancestry and sex based on either linear or mixture discriminant analysis of 11 osteometric and six morphoscopic variables. The metric and morphoscopic variables assessed using (hu)MANid have been determined to be highly replicable, however, few external validation studies have been conducted.

Materials And Methods: This article provides a test of the (hu)MANid analytical software using an independent sample (n = 52) of Native American mandibles from the Great Lakes region to investigate the accuracy of the program for identifying this important demographic group.

Department of Kinesiology, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas (Dr Hernandez); Department of Kinesiology (Mss Miller, Prieto, and Sehmer, and Drs Schaefer, Columna, Andreae, and Bell), Department Orthopedics and Rehabilitation (Drs McGuine and Bell), and School of Nursing (Dr Snedden), University of Wisconsin-Madison; Department of Kinesiology, The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (Dr Biese); and Department of Applied medicine and Rehabilitation, Indiana State University, Terre Haute (Dr Eberman).

Article Synopsis
  • Hispanic/Latinx communities often have fewer chances to get involved in sports and stay active, which can affect their health.
  • The study looked at how both parents and kids in these communities feel about playing sports and how being specialized in one sport can change their experiences.
  • Researchers found that when parents and kids have different expectations about sports, it can make sports less enjoyable, especially in a system where you have to pay to participate.

About the Authors Rachelle Lancaster, PhD, RN, is a nurse scientist and nursing research manager, Advocate Aurora Health, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Heather Englund, PhD, RN, is associate professor, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Morgan Anibas, BSN, RN, and Cassidy Vande Berg, BSN, RN, were students at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing when this study was conducted. The authors are grateful to Dr. Larry Carlin, dean, Honors College, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, and Dr. Diane Mancino, executive director, National Student Nurses' Association. For more information, contact Dr. Lancaster at

Nationwide, nursing students experienced multiple interruptions in learning because of the pandemic. Little is known about the impact of COVID-19 on resilience and self-compassion. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used to examine pandemic-related factors, resilience, and self-compassion using the Brief Resilience and Self-Compassion scales.

Despite the existing literature assessing various aspects of marriage, there is a lack of understanding of adults' motives for pursuing marriage. Thus, this research advanced the literature by assessing adults' motives for marriage via four novel studies in which the Motives for Marriage Scale (MMS) was developed, refined, and validated. In study one, semi-structured focus groups were conducted to capture the range of motives for marriage.

Individual differences have become increasingly important in the study of child development and language. However, despite the important role parents play in children's language, no work has examined how parent personality impacts language development. The current study examines the impact of parent personality as well as child temperament on language development in 460 16- to 30-month-old children and 328 31- to 42-month-old children.

Identifying the referent of novel words is a complex process that young children do with relative ease. When given multiple objects along with a novel word, children select the most novel item, sometimes retaining the word-referent link. Prior work is inconsistent, however, on the role of object novelty.

Unlabelled: Background/Study Context: Employing the stereotype content model and terror management theory, we examined whether stereotypes and feelings about persons with dementia vary depending on the type of dementia diagnosis and purported causes of the dementia.

Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to read one of four vignettes that depicted a man who consulted his doctor because of memory problems. All vignettes described the same symptoms and diagnostic tests, but each of four groups read a different result: all tests normal (Normal); Alzheimer's disease (AD); Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS) associated with alcohol abuse; and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) associated with head injuries from playing football in high school and college.

Control limits for p control charts with small subgroup sizes.

Qual Manag Health Care

September 2007

From the College of Business Administration, The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Oshkosh, WI 54901, USA.

The p chart is widely used in health care and other service organizations as well as in manufacturing to monitor the proportion of observations with some particular characteristic for comparing several sources of data or for tracking a single source of data over time. The conventional approach is to use 3sigma limits found by using the normal approximation to the binomial distribution. This article reviews a method for taking into account the fact that 3sigma limits are not always appropriate, and suggests the use of the exact binomial distribution instead of the normal approximation to eliminate the problems associated with small subgroups.

A series of batch reactor experiments was carried out to examine the effect of a nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) on the biodegradation of a hydrophobic solute. A mathematical program model that describes physical processes of solute solubilization and partitioning between the NAPL and aqueous phases as well as microbial degradation and oxygen utilization was used to analyze the test data. The model calculates the cumulative changes in concentration of substrate, cell mass, carbon dioxide, and dissolved oxygen as a function of time.
