In the past decades, iron has been one of the intensively studied biodegradable metals due to its suitable mechanical properties, but it suffers from slow degradation in a physiological environment and low bioactivity. In this work, the beneficial properties of ceramic and polymer coatings were merged to enhance the corrosion properties and biological compatibility of Fe-based biomaterials. A new bilayer coating for Fe-based biomaterials that speeds up degradation while offering controlled, localized drug release to prevent infections was prepared.

Enterococci are a group of microorganisms that have a controversial position from some scientific points of view. The species of the greatest clinical importance are and , which are common agents of nosocomial infections. However, enterococci also have important applications in the dairy industry, as they are used as non-starter lactic acid bacteria (NSLAB) in a variety of cheeses, especially artisanal cheeses.

The work is focused on the degradation, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial properties, of iron-based biomaterials with a bioactive coating layer. The foam and the compact iron samples were coated with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer layer without and with gentamicin sulfate (PEG + Ge). The corrosion properties of coated and uncoated samples were studied using the degradation testing in Hanks' solution at 37 °C.

The investigation of cycloaddition reactions involving acridine-based dipolarophiles revealed distinct regioselectivity patterns influenced mainly by the electronic factor. Specifically, the reactions of methyl-(2)-3-(acridin-4-yl)-prop-2-enoate and 4-[(1)-2-phenylethenyl]acridine with unstable benzonitrile N-oxides were studied. For methyl-(2)-3-(acridin-4-yl)-prop-2-enoate, the formation of two regioisomers favoured the 5-(acridin-4-yl)-4,5-dihydro-1,2-oxazole-4-carboxylates, with remarkable exclusivity in the case of 4-methoxybenzonitrile oxide.

Nowadays, there is an effort to improve the effectiveness of the composting process, supported by the addition of various supplements to reduce soil nutrition losses and increase soil remediation. The aim of this study was to examine the devitalization effect of natural additives like zeolite-clinoptilolite and its combination with hydrated lime in composted cattle manure on indicator and pathogen bacteria. The composting process was running in three static piles of cattle manure mixed with wheat straw (control, zeolite-lime, and zeolite) for 126 days.

The aim of this study was to provide a beneficial treatment effect of mesenchymal stem cell products derived from the canine amniotic membrane (AM-MSC) on the complicated wound healing process in dogs. AM-MSCs were characterized in terms of morphology, phenotypic profile, and multilineage differentiation potential. The in vitro study of the effect of canine amniotic mesenchymal stem cell conditioned media (AMMSC-CM) on a primary skin fibroblast cell culture scratch assay showed a decrease in the measured scratch area of about 66.

Psoriasis is a disease that causes keratinocytes to proliferate ten times faster than normal, resulting in chronic inflammation and immune cell infiltration in the skin. Aloe vera (A. vera) creams have been used topically for treating psoriasis because they contain several antioxidant species; however, they have several limitations.

Birds and mammals share various ectoparasites, which are responsible for the transmission of a wide range of pathogens. The louse flies (family Hippoboscidae) are ectoparasitic dipterans feeding strictly on the blood of mammals and birds. Both sexes of the louse flies are obligatory hematophagous and are known to act as the vectors of infectious agents.

Maintaining appropriate living conditions and good health of the animals should be one of the main priorities of cat shelters. The aim of this study was to assess the morbidity of shelter cats on the basis of analysis of the shelter health records in terms of the nature and quantity of medicaments and other supportive products administered in two no-kill shelters in the Czech Republic. The subject of the study were the health records of 1,884 cats, which were admitted to the selected shelters from 1.

In this study, we provide comprehensive analyses of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from three types of canine tissues: bone marrow (BM-MSCs), adipose tissue (AT-MSCs) and amniotic tissue (AM-MSCs). We compare their morphology, phenotype, multilineage potential and proliferation activity. The BM-MSCs and AM-MSCs showed fibroblast-like shapes against the spindle shape of the AT-MSCs.

Kynurenines have immunomodulatory and neuroactive properties and can influence the central nervous system. Previous studies showed the involvement of the kynurenines in the pathogenesis and progression of neurodegenerative disease. In neurodegenerative disorders, including tauopathies, the tryptophan metabolism is shifted toward neurotoxic agents and the reduction of neuroprotectant products.

and some species of coagulase-negative staphylococci, including , commonly cause intramammary infections. However, little attention was paid to the antimicrobial resistance of these species with respect to their occurrence in dairy products, for example, popular sheep and goat cheeses made from unpasteurized milk. The aim of this study was to investigate such sheep and goat cheeses for the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance of the relevant staphylococci species.

In a modern world, both tick-borne diseases and alcohol consumption are among major public health threats. In the present opinion article, we pose the question, whether these two health problems: alcohol consumption and tick-borne diseases prevalence can be related. We hypothesize that it is possible due to at least three factors: outdoor places chosen for alcohol consumption, behavioral changes induced by alcohol, and possible stronger attraction of human hosts after alcohol consumption to ticks.

West Nile virus (WNV), re-emerging neurotropic flavivirus, can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and cause fatal encephalitis and meningitis. Infection of the human brain microvascular endothelial cells (hBMECs), building blocks of the BBB, represents the pivotal step in neuroinvasion. Domain III (DIII) of the envelope (E) glycoprotein is a key receptor-binding domain, thus, it is an attractive target for anti-flavivirus strategies.

Antibiotic resistance of the indicator microorganism was investigated in isolates from samples collected during the course of one year from two wastewater treatment plants treating municipal and animal wastes in Slovakia, respectively. The genes of antibiotic resistance and virulence factors in selected resistant isolates were described. A high percentage of the isolates from municipal and animal wastewater were resistant to ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, ceftiofur, ceftriaxone, and enrofloxacin.

Nanomaterials, including zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), have a great application potential in many fields, such as medicine, the textile industry, electronics, and cosmetics. Their impact on the environment must be carefully investigated and specified due to their wide range of application. However, the amount of data on possible negative effects of ZnO NPs on plants at the cellular level are still insufficient.

Lyme borreliosis is one of the major tick-borne diseases in Europe. Events of the translocation of Borrelia across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) involve multiple interactions between borrelial surface proteins and receptors on the brain microvascular endothelial cells (hBMECs). In this study, we aimed to identify proteins of Borrelia that plausibly interact with hBMECs.
