The effect of agonists on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), mainly metformin and phenformin, has been appreciated in the treatment of multiple types of tumors. Specifically, the antitumor activity of phenformin has been demonstrated in melanomas containing the v-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) activating mutation. In this report, we elucidated the synergistic antitumor effects of biguanides with metabolism inhibitors on colon tumors.

Objectives: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in adults has been extensively studied through multicenter prospective studies. Similar pediatric studies are lacking. The Pediatric ERCP Database Initiative (PEDI) is a multicenter collaborative aiming to evaluate the indications and technical outcomes in pediatric ERCPs.

KELCH-ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1) is an adaptor protein of Cullin 3 (CUL3) E3 ubiquitin ligase that targets a redox sensitive transcription factor, NF-E2-related factor 2 (NRF2). BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1) is a tumor suppressor and deubiquitinase whose mutations increase the risk of several types of familial cancers. In the present study, we have identified that BAP1 deubiquitinates KEAP1 by binding to the BTB domain.

Background/aim: Although molecular targeting therapy is an attractive treatment for cancer, resistance eventually develops in most cases. Here, we evaluated chemotherapeutic efficacy on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with acquired resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors mechanistically.

Materials And Methods: Antitumor effects of taxotere were evaluated using multiple models, including xenograft, and patient-derived models developed from adenocarcinoma cancer patients.

Background: This study investigated the epidemiology and causes of bearing dislocations following mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (MUKA) and determined whether the incidence of primary bearing dislocations decreases as surgeon experience increases.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the bearing dislocations following MUKAs performed by 14 surgeons with variable experience levels. Causes of bearing dislocations were determined based on the surgical records, radiographs, and operator's suggestion.

Background: Tunnel misplacement is a common cause of failed anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. In this study, the accuracy of the femoral tunnel position was evaluated in robot-assisted ACL reconstruction using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based navigation system. We hypothesized that a difference of less than 2 mm between the planned femoral tunnel position and the created one was achievable.

Distinct extra-articular invasion patterns of diffuse pigmented villonodular synovitis/tenosynovial giant cell tumor in the knee joints.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

November 2018

Investigation Performed at the University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Asan Medical Center, Seoul, South Korea.

Purpose: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS)/tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) is a benign, proliferative lesion of the synovium, the bursa, and the tendon sheath. Little is known about the anatomical distribution pattern of diffuse extra-articular PVNS/TGCT around the knee joint. In this retrospective study, anatomical distribution of PVNS/TGCT using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and arthroscopy was analyzed.

Histone modification plays a pivotal role on gene regulation, as regarded as global epigenetic markers, especially in tumor related genes. Hence, chemical approaches targeting histone-modifying enzymes have emerged onto the main stage of anticancer drug discovery. Here, we investigated the therapeutic potentials and mechanistic roles of the recently developed histone deacetylase inhibitor, CG200745, in non-small cell lung cancer cells.

In the effort to develop an efficient chemotherapy drug for the treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we analyzed the anti-tumorigenic effects of a novel small molecule targeting the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAPs), HM90822B, on NSCLC cells. HM90822B efficiently decreased IAP expression, especially that of XIAP and survivin, in several NSCLC cells. Interestingly, cells overexpressing epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) due to the mutations were more sensitive to HM90822B, undergoing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis when treated.

Objective: The objectives of the present study are to estimate the incidence of postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) after radical nephrectomy with inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombectomy for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) based on the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) criteria, to investigate the risk factors for postoperative AKI, and to define the association between postoperative AKI and clinical outcome in patients undergoing such a surgery.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 76 patients (22 women; mean age, 56.9 years; range, 29-83 years) with RCC and IVC thrombus who underwent radical nephrectomy and IVC thrombectomy at our institute between January 2003 and December 2011.

For the injury of the lower leg associated with both bone and soft-tissue defect, the combined free flap and the Ilizarov distraction method were described as a useful treatment modality. During the procedure of distraction, however, revisions were frequently needed to change the pin position or to change the flap configuration. In case of flap ischemia, distraction should be delayed or abandoned.
