α-Synuclein is a major component of Lewy bodies and Lewy neuritis which are hallmarks of Parkinson's disease, and is known to propagate from cell-to-cell in a prion-like manner. However, the exact mechanism of α-synuclein propagation in cells remains unclear. Despite the increasing number of studies and models of α-synuclein propagation, there is no direct evidence demonstrating whether the propagation is trans-synaptic or synaptic connection-independent, what the direction of propagation is, and what the regulators of α-synuclein propagation are.

The main findings are the hydroxyl radical scavenging and the superoxide anion diminishing by mixing the carbon dioxide (CO) nanobubbles after hydrogen nanobubble blowing in water and alcohol aqueous solution. The nanobubbles produce the hydroxyl radical by ultrasonic waves, changing the pH and catalyst and so on, while the nanobubble is very reactive to scavenge free radicals. In this research especially hydrogen (4% H in argon) and CO nanobubbles have been blown into hydrogen peroxide (HO) added pure water, ethanol, and ethylene glycol aqueous solution through a porous ceramic sparger from the gas cylinder.

The question of whether, how, and to what extent climate change is affecting health is central to many climate and health studies. We describe a set of formal methods, termed detection and attribution, used by climatologists to determine whether a climate trend or extreme event has changed and to estimate the extent to which climate change influenced that change. We discuss events where changing weather patterns were attributed to climate change and extend these analyses to include health impacts from heat waves in 2018 and 2019 in Europe and Japan, and we show how such impact attribution could be applied to melting ice roads in the Arctic.

Nonuniversal Power Law Distribution of Intensities of the Self-Excited Hawkes Process: A Field-Theoretical Approach.

The Hawkes self-excited point process provides an efficient representation of the bursty intermittent dynamics of many physical, biological, geological, and economic systems. By expressing the probability for the next event per unit time (called "intensity"), say of an earthquake, as a sum over all past events of (possibly) long-memory kernels, the Hawkes model is non-Markovian. By mapping the Hawkes model onto stochastic partial differential equations that are Markovian, we develop a field theoretical approach in terms of probability density functionals.

The Jun dimerization protein 2 (Jdp2) is expressed predominantly in granule cell progenitors (GCPs) in the cerebellum, as was shown in Jdp2-promoter-Cre transgenic mice. Cerebellum of Jdp2-knockout (KO) mice contains lower number of Atoh-1 positive GCPs than WT. Primary cultures of GCPs from Jdp2-KO mice at postnatal day 5 were more resistant to apoptosis than GCPs from wild-type mice.

Spatial patterns of health vulnerability to heatwaves in Vietnam.

The increasing frequency and intensity of heat events have weighty impacts on public health in Vietnam, but their effects vary across regions. In this study, we have applied a vulnerability assessment framework (VAF) to systematically assess the spatial pattern of health vulnerability to heatwaves in Vietnam. The VAF was computed as the function of three dimensions: exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity, with the indicators for each dimension derived from the relevant literature, consultation with experts, and available data.

By solving the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation with a finite element method (FEM), three-dimensional (3D) spatial distributions of the electric potential (ψ, scaled) in electrolyte solutions having two charged parallel finite plates (including cubes and prismatic rods) are determined for various separations (, scaled by the Debye length, κ), surface potentials (ψ), and plate dimensions (length × width × thickness, each scaled by κ). The total interaction force between two plates, , is the sum of the electrostatic double-layer (EDL) repulsion (the osmotic pressure, ) and the Maxwell electrostatic stress (). The EDL repulsion is estimated using the distribution of ψ not only between the facing surfaces of two parallel plates but also around the other extremities of the plates.

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common movement disorders and is characterized by dopaminergic cell loss and the accumulation of pathological α-synuclein, but its precise pathogenetic mechanisms remain elusive. To develop disease-modifying therapies for Parkinson's disease, an animal model that recapitulates the pathology and symptoms of the disease, especially in the prodromal stage, is indispensable. As subjects with α-synuclein gene (SNCA) multiplication as well as point mutations develop familial Parkinson's disease and a genome-wide association study in Parkinson's disease has identified SNCA as a risk gene for Parkinson's disease, the increased expression of α-synuclein is closely associated with the aetiology of Parkinson's disease.

The transition metal (iron or cobalt) is a mandatory part that constitutes the catalytic center of nitrile hydratase (NHase). The incorporation of the cobalt ion into cobalt-containing NHase (Co-NHase) was reported to depend on self-subunit swapping and the activator of the Co-NHase acts as a self-subunit swapping chaperone for subunit exchange. Here we discovered that the activator acting as a metallochaperone transferred the cobalt ion into subunit-fused Co-NHase.

Launched in January 2015, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) observatory was designed to provide frequent global mapping of high-resolution soil moisture and freeze-thaw state every two to three days using a radar and a radiometer operating at L-band frequencies. Despite a hardware mishap that rendered the radar inoperable shortly after launch, the radiometer continues to operate nominally, returning more than two years of science data that have helped to improve existing hydrological applications and foster new ones. Beginning in late 2016 the SMAP project launched a suite of new data products with the objective of recovering some high-resolution observation capability loss resulting from the radar malfunction.

Optically pure compounds are important in the synthesis of fine chemicals. Using directed evolution of enzymes to obtain biocatalysts that can selectively produce high-value chiral chemicals is often time-, money-, and resource-intensive; traditional semi-rational designs based on structural data and docking experiments are still limited due to the lack of accurate selection of hot-spot residues. In this study, through ligand-protein collision counts based on steered molecular dynamics simulation, we accurately identified four residues related to improving nitrile hydratase stereoselectivity toward rac-mandelonitrile (MAN).

Magnetism and spin entropy in Ru doped NaCoO.

The effect of Ru doping on the magnetic coupling among Co ions and on the Seebeck effect in NaCoO was systematically studied using density functional theory. It was found that the Ru dopant takes the 4+ oxidation state and replaces a Co ion. In addition, the remaining Co ions in NaCoO:Ru were stabilized in a low spin state.

Reprogramming of cancer cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) is a compelling idea for inhibiting oncogenesis, especially through modulation of homeobox proteins in this reprogramming process. We examined the role of various long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs)-homeobox protein HOXA13 axis on the switching of the oncogenic function of bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7), which is significantly lost in the gastric cancer cell derived iPS-like cells (iPSLCs). BMP7 promoter activation occurred through the corecruitment of HOXA13, mixed-lineage leukemia 1 lysine N-methyltransferase, WD repeat-containing protein 5, and lncRNA HoxA transcript at the distal tip (HOTTIP) to commit the epigenetic changes to the trimethylation of lysine 4 on histone H3 in cancer cells.

In general, hemoproteins are capable of catalyzing redox reactions. Aldoxime dehydratase (OxdA), which is a unique heme-containing enzyme, catalyzes the dehydration of aldoximes to the corresponding nitriles. Its reaction is a rare example of heme directly activating an organic substrate, unlike the utilization of H2O2 or O2 as a mediator of catalysis by other heme-containing enzymes.

In this chapter, we describe a method for the induction of stomach organoids from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. We used an embryoid body-based differentiation method to induce gastric primordial epithelium covered with mesenchyme and further differentiate it in Matrigel by 3D culture. The differentiated organoid contains both corpus- and antrum-specific mature gastric tissue cells.
