Purpose: To assess the effects of modifying head position and of static ocular counter-rolling (OCR) on abduction and adduction in saccadic eye movements using a head-mounted video-oculographic device.
Study Design: A clinical observational study.
Methods: The peak velocities and amplitude gains of visually guided 12° saccades were binocularly measured in 21 healthy volunteers with their heads in the upright vertical (0°) and horizontal (± 90°, bilateral side-lying) postures, and in 6 participants with their head positions bilaterally tilted by 30°.

Red yeast rice, traditionally used in Asian cuisine and increasingly marketed as a dietary supplement for cholesterol management, has recently been linked to kidney dysfunction in Japan. In late 2023 to early 2024, multiple cases involving specific Beni-koji (red yeast rice) tablets from three different Beni-koji preparations, prompted a safety reevaluation. Although citrinin, a known nephrotoxin of red yeast rice, was not produced by the implicated strains, new safety concerns emerged.

Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, displaced people, and refugees, often encounter challenges in accessing healthcare. In this study, we used data from the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) to describe kidney care access and delivery to vulnerable populations across countries and regions. Using data from an international survey of clinicians, policymakers, and patient advocates, we assessed the funding and coverage of vulnerable populations on all aspects of kidney replacement therapies (KRT).

Study Objectives: Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is potentially linked to life-threatening conditions. Decline in kidney function is involved in the development of various diseases; however, it remains unclear whether it is implicated in the onset of SAS. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between kidney function and the incidence of SAS.

Aims: Blood levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) may be modified by low renal clearance and anaemia. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the blood NT-proBNP level on cardiovascular and renal outcomes in patients with these two manifestations.
Methods: This post hoc analysis stemmed from the oBservational clinical Research In chronic kidney disease patients with renal anemia: renal proGnosis in patients with Hyporesponsive anemia To Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, darbepoetiN alfa (BRIGHTEN) trial, a large prospective study involving patients with non-dialysis kidney disease experiencing anaemia.

Introduction: Cleft lip and cleft palate are congenital disorders resulting from abnormal facial development. Current treatments require multiple surgeries, which have risks of scar formation and facial deformities. Recently, fetal treatments utilizing "scarless healing" have gained attention, as early intervention shows potential to suppress scarring.

Background: This study was designed to evaluate the long-term durability, oxygenation, and pressure loss of newly developed, methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-polymer-coated, nonporous silicone hollow fiber-membrane lungs in vivo using a pulmonary artery-to-left-atrium paracorporeal configuration.
Methods: An extracorporeal circuit from the pulmonary artery (device inflow) to the left atrium (device outflow) was established using dedicated composite vascular grafts in three healthy female goats for the prototype lung testing.
Results: Duration of testing the prototype lungs was 52, 57, or 100 days.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects certain populations as demonstrated by well-established subnational geographic hotspots of CKD in Central America and South Asia. Using data from the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA), we aimed to systematically identify sub-national geographic or population clusters with high prevalence of CKD. The ISN-GKHA survey was conducted from July to September 2022, and included questions regarding whether a regional CKD hotspot existed in the respondents' country and possible contributors.

In low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs), delivering equitable kidney care presents substantial challenges, resulting in significant disparities in disease management and treatment outcomes for people with kidney failure. This comprehensive report leveraged data from the International Society of Nephrology-Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA), to provide a detailed update on the landscape of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in LLMICs. Among the 65 participating LLMICs, reimbursement for KRT (publicly funded by the government and free at the point of delivery) was available in 28%, 15%, and 8% for hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and kidney transplantation (KT), respectively.

Background: National strategies to address chronic kidney disease (CKD) are crucial to support kidney health. Lack of political support in the form of policy decisions and funding leads to fragmentation of kidney care and catastrophic health expenditure. This study used data from the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) to obtain a global overview of the existence and reach of national strategies for kidney care.

Even though chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant comorbidity in individuals with diabetes, there appears to be worldwide confusion regarding the terminology used to describe it, including diabetic nephropathy, diabetic kidney disease (DKD), CKD with diabetes, diabetes and CKD, etc. In Japan, we have encountered similar confusion regarding the terminology used to describe kidney disease in individuals with diabetes, especially when written in Japanese due to terminological similarities in Chinese characters. The primary issue in Japan was deciphering the significance of "Diabetic," specifically whether it is an essential attribute of the condition itself.

Background/objectives: The efficacy of lung metastasectomy in patients with urothelial carcinoma remains inconclusive, as there is only limited evidence from small studies. In this study, we aimed to assess the prognostic outcomes of excising pulmonary metastases from urothelial carcinoma.
Methods: In this study, we utilized data from the Metastatic Lung Tumor Study Group of Japan database, a multi-institutional prospective database of pulmonary metastasectomies.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in low and lower-middle income countries. Data from the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) were used to evaluate the organization of structures and services for the provision of AKI care in world countries and ISN regions. An international survey of key stakeholders (clinicians, policymakers, and patient advocates) from countries affiliated with the ISN was conducted from July to September 2022 to assess structures and services for AKI care across countries.
