Studies of traditional model organisms such as the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster have contributed immensely to our understanding of the genetic basis of developmental processes. However, the generalizability of these findings cannot be confirmed without functional genetic analyses in additional organisms. Direct genome editing using targeted nucleases has the potential to transform hitherto poorly understood organisms into viable laboratory organisms for functional genetic study.

January 2025

Department of Thoracic, Endocrine Surgery and Oncology, Institute of Health, Biosciences, The University of Tokushima, 3-18-15, Kuramoto-Cho, Tokushima, 770-8503, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of video-assisted neck surgery (VANS) for treating papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) compared to traditional open thyroid surgery.
  • A total of 121 patients were examined, with significant findings showing that VANS had less blood loss but longer operative times than open surgery, without major differences in complications or recurrence rates.
  • The conclusion indicates that VANS is a viable option for thyroid surgery in PTC cases, although more extended follow-up is necessary to fully understand long-term recurrence rates.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 93-year-old woman with a long history of Graves' disease developed severe tracheal stenosis due to a giant thyroid goiter, leading to breathing difficulties and loss of consciousness.
  • - Due to the patient's age and the complexity of the goiter, surgical options were risky; instead, a silicone tracheal stent was successfully placed to alleviate the airway obstruction.
  • - Following the stent placement, the patient's respiratory symptoms improved; however, some narrowing occurred after three months, which was addressed using argon plasma coagulation.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major cause of microvascular dysfunction. However, its effect on blood flow patterns during ischemic demand has not been adequately elucidated. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that microvascular dysfunction in patients with T2DM manifests as brachial reactive hyperemia (BRH), defined as the ratio of peak blood flow velocities in a brachial artery before and after forearm cuff occlusion.

Cancers showing excessive innervation of sensory neurons (SN) in their microenvironments are associated with poor outcomes due to promoted growth, increased tumor recurrence, metastasis, and cancer pain, suggesting SNs play a regulatory role in cancer aggressiveness. Using a preclinical model in which mouse 4T1 breast cancer (BC) cells were injected into the bone marrow of tibiae, we found 4T1 BC cells aggressively colonized bone with bone destruction and subsequently spread to the lung. Of note, 4T1 BC colonization induced the acidic tumor microenvironment in bone in which SNs showed increased innervation and excitation with elevated expression of the acid-sensing nociceptor transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1), eliciting bone pain (BP) assessed by mechanical hypersensitivity.
