Background/objectives: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is rising, and Western diets high in red and processed meats may be contributing. It is important to identify dietary nutrients that increase CRC risk and perhaps interventions that may modulate such risk. The relationship between dietary choline intake and CRC is still unclear.

Metabolic Monitoring for Children and Adolescents Prescribed Second-Generation Antipsychotics: A Qualitative Study with Child Psychiatrists.

Professional guidelines recommend that providers routinely monitor children prescribed second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) to reduce the risk of adverse metabolic events associated with the medication. Despite this guidance, many studies show low rates of monitoring compliance. In this study, we interviewed child psychiatrists for their views of possible barriers to monitoring.

RBCs regulate platelet function and hemostasis under shear conditions through biophysical and biochemical means.

Red blood cells (RBCs) have been hypothesized to support hemostasis by facilitating platelet margination and releasing platelet-activating factors such as adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP). Significant knowledge gaps remain regarding how RBCs influence platelet function, especially in (patho)physiologically relevant hemodynamic conditions. Here, we present results showing how RBCs affect platelet function and hemostasis in conditions of anemia, thrombocytopenia, and pancytopenia and how the biochemical and biophysical properties of RBCs regulate platelet function at the blood and vessel wall interface and in the fluid phase under flow conditions.

Epidemiological analysis of fatal and non-fatal firearm injuries occurring in gun establishments in the United States, 2015-2022.

Background: Firearm-related injury represents a significant public health problem in the USA. Firearm purchasing has risen nationwide and there has been increased efforts to deploy injury prevention initiatives within gun establishments. However, firearm-related risks and harms that may occur inside these high-exposure settings are not well characterized.

Association Between Abnormal Metabolic Parameters and Receiving Subsequent Interventions in Children and Adolescents Initiating Second-Generation Antipsychotics.

This study aimed to examine the association between abnormal readings of metabolic parameters detected during second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) treatment and the likelihood of receiving subsequent adverse drug event interventions. This was a nested case-control study conducted on patients 1-17 years of age with at least two prescriptions of SGAs between January 2010 and January 2019 using TriNetX EMR data. Following an incident density sampling procedure, patients who received the SGA metabolic adverse event intervention (mAEI) (case) were matched with three nonrecipients (controls).

Impact of the AACAP practice parameters on the metabolic adverse event monitoring for second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) in children and adolescents.

Introduction: The objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of the publication of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) practice parameters for SGA metabolic monitoring in 2011 on SGA metabolic monitoring uptake among pediatric SGA recipients.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of children 1-17 years of age who initiated SGA treatment from Jan 2010 to December 2018 using a national Electronic Medical Records database. A segmented regression of interrupted time-series (ITS) analysis was conducted to analyze the change of metabolic monitoring rates for Body Mass Index (BMI), Blood Glucose (BG), and Total Cholesterol (CHL) 9 quarters pre- and 26 quarters post-the publication of the AACAP practice parameters.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of data collected from 429 women who participated in Fels Longitudinal Study data. Sleep quality, based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, demographics, medical history, depression, quality of life, and physical activity levels were included in the analysis.

Recently, the US Federal Drug Administration approved pembrolizumab for the treatment of endometrial cancers that are deficient in mismatch repair and have high microsatellite instability (MSI). Hospital readmissions and emergency department re-presentation of COVID-19 patients: a systematic review.

Objective: To characterize the frequency, causes, and predictors of readmissions of COVID-19 patients after discharge from heath facilities or emergency departments, interventions used to reduce readmissions, and outcomes of COVID-19 patients discharged from such settings.

Methods: We performed a systematic review for case series and observational studies published between January 2020 and April 2021 in PubMed, Embase, LILACS, and MedRxiv, reporting the frequency, causes, or risk factors for readmission of COVID-19 survivors/patients. We conducted a narrative synthesis and assessed the methodological quality using the JBI critical appraisal checklist.

Phase Ib study of avadomide (CC-122) in combination with rituximab in patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma.

The multicenter, phase Ib CC-122-DLBCL-001 dose-expansion study (NCT02031419) explored the cereblon E3 ligase modulator (CELMoD) agent avadomide (CC-122) plus rituximab in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) or follicular lymphoma (FL). Patients received avadomide 3 mg/day 5 days on/2 days off plus rituximab 375 mg/m on day 8 of cycle 1, day 1 of cycles 2 through 6, and day 1 of every third subsequent cycle for 2 years. Primary endpoints were safety and tolerability; preliminary efficacy was a secondary endpoint.

Lymphatic drainage generates force that induces prostate cancer cell motility via activation of Yes-associated protein (YAP), but whether this response to fluid force is conserved across cancer types is unclear. Here, we show that shear stress corresponding to fluid flow in the initial lymphatics modifies taxis in breast cancer, whereas some cell lines use rapid amoeboid migration behavior in response to fluid flow, a separate subset decrease movement. Positive responders displayed transcriptional profiles characteristic of an amoeboid cell state, which is typical of cells advancing at the edges of neoplastic tumors.

BTK inhibitor selection for chronic lymphocytic leukemia: which drug for which patient?

Introduction: The development of BTK inhibitors has revolutionized the management of CLL. Currently, there are 3 BTK inhibitors available to treat CLL: ibrutinib, acalabrutinib, and zanubrutinib (the latter not yet approved for this disease but included in the NCCN guidelines). In this review, we will elucidate our approach to the selection of BTK inhibitor and provide insight into the future of BTK directed therapy.

The effect of recipient BMI on waitlist and post-transplant outcomes after the 2018 heart transplant allocation policy change.

Objective: The effects of recipient body mass index (BMI) on waitlist strategies, waitlist outcomes, and post-transplant outcomes among adult patients listed for heart transplantation under the updated 2018 allocation system have not been well characterized.

Methods: The United Network of Organ Sharing data set between October 2015 and March 2021 was analyzed, and patients were grouped based on recipient BMI and whether listing occurred in the old (pre-October 2018) or new allocation system.

Results: Listing strategies differed by BMI group, but trends of increased use of temporary mechanical support and decreased use of durable support remained among all BMI groups, except those with BMI > 35 kg/m .
