Management of body fluid volumes and adequate prescription of ultrafiltration (UF) remain key issues in the treatment of chronic kidney disease patients. This study aims to estimate the magnitude as well as the precision of absolute blood volume () modeled during regular hemodialysis (HD) using standard data available with modern dialysis machines. The estimation utilizes a two-compartment fluid model and a mathematical optimization technique to predict UF-induced changes in hematocrit measured by available on-line techniques.

: In the 1970s a body of literature was generated advocating the alternatives approach for drug misuse prevention and rehabilitation which encouraged healthy nonchemical behaviors leading to reinforcing moods. Although this behaviorally oriented approach was overshadowed with the popularity of cognitive therapy in the 1980s, many of the recommended alternative behaviors remain embedded in cognitive approaches for drug misuse prevention and rehabilitation. One objective of the present study was to replicate, in part, two studies conducted in the 1970s which examined usage patterns of non-drug alternatives.

Purpose: There are very few studies that have compared the short-term outcomes of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Among short-term outcomes, hospital readmission after these procedures is an area for quality enhancement and cost reduction. In this study, we compared 30-day readmission rates after LSG and LRYGB through analyzing a nationalized dataset.

Introduction: Craniosynostosis is a common pediatric presentation in which the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures results in a misshapen skull. This birth defect is often associated with comorbidities due to structural impacts on nearby anatomical features. While there is some evidence for a male predominance among craniosynostosis patients, little has been investigated regarding sex differences in comorbidities of this condition.

In women's health, clinicians are often faced with diagnosing and administering treatment to patients who present with an increased vaginal discharge without much other information to work with. It's only once a patient's background is reviewed and lab work is completed that two common reasons behind vaginal discharge with similar symptoms, Lactobacillosis and Cytolytic Vaginitis, can be differentiated and a proper diagnosis can be reached. Now, we understand that Lactobacillosis and Cytolytic Vaginitis are symptomatically confused by patients as well as inexperienced clinicians.

Studies of arousal and emotion show that generalized physiological arousal can enhance emotional experience for a range of different emotions. Other research shows that different emotions may be associated with specific patterns of physiological reactivity. Together these findings suggest that while nonspecific autonomic activation can be sufficient in the generation of emotion, specific patterns of reactivity may appear once the emotion is established.

Reproductive hardship is highly stigmatized, which leads to such struggles being relegated to the private sphere. At the same time, numerous studies show links between toxic chemicals and reproductive hardship including miscarriage, infertility, and birth defects. There thus exists a disconnection between contributors to reproductive challenges and the fact that such hardship is frequently viewed as a problem.

Extensive numerical simulations of rigidity percolation with only central forces in large three-dimensional lattices have indicated that many of their topological properties undergo a first-order phase transition at the rigidity percolation threshold p_{ce}. In contrast with such properties, past numerical calculations of the elastic moduli of the same lattices had provided evidence for a second-order phase transition. In this paper we present the results of extensive simulation of rigidity percolation in large body-centered cubic (bcc) lattices, and show that as the linear size L of the lattice increases, the elastic moduli close to p_{ce} decrease in a stepwise, discontinuous manner, a feature that is absent in lattices with L<30.
