Antibody response to Candida albicans cell wall antigens.

FEMS Immunol Med Microbiol

July 2004

Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, The University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio, USA.

The cell wall of Candida albicans is not only the structure where many essential biological functions reside but is also a significant source of candidal antigens. The major cell wall components that elicit a response from the host immune system are proteins and glycoproteins, the latter being predominantly mannoproteins. Both carbohydrate and protein moieties are able to trigger immune responses.

Most studies have suggested that ethnic factors impact significantly on systemic sclerosis. Extensive epidemiologic studies have been carried out in white individuals, and limited data suggest that blacks are affected twice as frequently; Japanese patients have a lower prevalence than whites. This highest rate that has been described has been in Choctaw Native Americans.

Is Her2 of value in identifying patients who particularly benefit from anthracyclines during adjuvant therapy? A qualified yes.

J Natl Cancer Inst Monogr

June 2002

Division of Oncology, The University of Texas Health Sciences Center, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, Rm. 5.214S, San Antonio, TX 78229, USA.

Data from several large adjuvant breast cancer chemotherapy trials suggest that anthracycline-based chemotherapies relative to non-anthracycline-based adjuvant therapies are particularly effective in patients whose tumors overexpress Her2. Most trials show some evidence of this effect, but the interaction generally has not been confirmed statistically, perhaps because the trials are underpowered. In addition, there have been a multiplicity of Her2 immunohistochemistry techniques used in these studies, which are clearly not of equivalent utility in detecting this effect.

Fluorouracil and the new oral fluorinated pyrimidines.

Ann Pharmacother

February 2001

Department of Pharmacology/Pharmacotherapy, The University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio 78284-6220, USA.

Objective: To briefly review the biotransformation and bioavailability of fluorouracil (5-FU); discuss the effects of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DpD) on the efficacy and toxicity profiles of 5-FU; and review a new class of drugs known collectively as the oral fluorinated pyrimidines, which inhibit or circumvent DpD activity and, when administered with 5-FU, alter its pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties.

Data Sources: A MEDLINE literature search was conducted (1966-March 1999) using the search terms fluoropyrimidines, fluorouracil, 5-FU, fluorinated pyrimidines, capecitabine, eniluracil, uracil-tegafur, uracil-ftorafur, UFT, S1, BMS-247616, and BOF-A2. Reference lists, bibliographies of pertinent articles, and abstracts from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium annual meetings were also identified and reviewed.

Background: African-American men have earlier onset of prostate cancer, higher prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, more advanced stage at diagnosis, and higher mortality than white men. It is not known whether the poorer survival of African-American men with prostate cancer reflects their later stage at diagnosis or differences in the basic biology of their disease. To evaluate this question, we examined outcomes of African-American and white men with metastatic prostate cancer in the context of a randomized clinical trial.

Efficacy of infrainguinal bypass for limb salvage in young diabetic patients.

J Diabetes Complications

January 2001

Section of Vascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, Room 219E, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229, USA.

The efficacy of infrainguinal bypass for limb salvage in young diabetic patients has not been well established. The purpose of this study is to determine the intermediate-term results (patency and limb salvage) of infrainguinal revascularization carried out for limb salvage (rest pain or ulceration) in young (<50 years old) diabetic atherosclerotic patients. Thirty-nine bypasses in 31 patients with a mean age of 44 years were retrospectively reviewed.

Chromium (Cr) compounds are known occupational and environmental carcinogens. This trace element is found in the workplace primarily in the valence forms Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Cr(III), which was thought originally to be relatively nontoxic, was recently found to be more reactive toward purified DNA than was chromium(VI).

Biodegradable polymers, especially those belonging to the family of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyglycolic acid (PGA), play an increasingly important role in orthopaedics. These polymers degrade by hydrolysis and enzymatic activity and have a range of mechanical and physical properties that can be engineered appropriately to suit a particular application. Their degradation characteristics depend on several parameters including their molecular structure, crystallinity, and copolymer ratio.

It is widely accepted that calorie restriction is an effective way of delaying the aging process. Also, there is an indication that the beneficial effects exerted by dietary manipulation may be due to a direct effect at the molecular level like gene expression. The studies were conducted to determine whether calorie restriction prevents any age-related changes in the structural and molecular aspects of the GABAA-BZ receptor.

Objective: Because the presence of echogenic fluid on transvaginal sonography has been shown to correlate well with hemoperitoneum in patients with possible ectopic pregnancy, the aim of this study was to compare echogenic fluid on sonography with the results of culdocentesis in predicting hemoperitoneum.

Materials And Methods: Free fluid on transvaginal sonography and the results of culdocentesis were correlated with the presence or absence of hemoperitoneum in 46 patients at surgery. Forty ectopic pregnancies and six nonectopic pregnancies were found.

The Agrobacterium tumefaciens VirB7 lipoprotein contributes to the stabilization of VirB proteins during biogenesis of the putative T-complex transport apparatus. Here, we report that stabilization of VirB7 itself is correlated with its ability to form disulfide cross-linked homodimers via a reactive Cys-24 residue. Three types of beta-mercaptoethanol-dissociable complexes were visualized with VirB7 and/or a VirB7::PhoA41 fusion protein: (i) a 9-kDa complex corresponding in size to a VirB7 homodimer, (ii) a 54-kDa complex corresponding in size to a VirB7/VirB7::PhoA41 mixed dimer, and (iii) a 102-kDa complex corresponding to a VirB7::PhoA41 homodimer.

The detection and diagnosis of travelers' diarrhea by fecal culture method, often insensitive, expensive, and time consuming, could well be replaced with the latex agglutination test to detect fecal lactoferrin. As an initial screening, this test could be useful to differentiate between those patients who are more likely to have an invasive enteropathogen and those patients requiring antidiarrheal chemotherapy only. Fecal samples from 92 patients with travelers' diarrhea were tested for occult blood, fecal leukocytes, and fecal lactoferrin at stool dilutions of 1:50 and 1:200.
