Background: Stroke associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) is a significant cause of mortality. This study analyzed demographic trends and disparities in mortality rates due to stroke in AF patients aged ≥25 years.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted to acquire death data using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention database from 1999 to 2020.

Using social network analysis to identify influential community organizations.

Background: We used a social network approach to identify influential community organizations within integrated public health networks in three regions in Texas, US: Houston/Harris County, Cameron County, and Northeast Texas. The study aimed to understand how network structures influence organizational performance in COVID-19 response.

Methods: In collaboration with community partners in each region, we administered a snowball sampling network data collection.

This study aims to examine the effect of treatment of UA during the same procedural time as treatment for the RA (concurrent treatment) versus delaying the treatment of an UA after discharging the patient (delayed treatment).

Most reported sexual assault cases occur when at least one of the relevant parties has consumed alcohol, which has neurochemical, behavioral, psychological, and cognitive effects that are important to consider relative to the facts of the case. Nearly a decade ago, Connell (2015) provided an overview of research relevant to an expert witness's role in these types of cases.

Intrathecal baclofen therapy for spasticity in a person with spinal cord injury and end-stage renal disease dependent on hemodialysis: a case report.

Introduction: Spasticity is one of the most common secondary complications following a spinal cord injury (SCI), which can significantly debilitate a patient irrespective of the severity of the injury. Intrathecal baclofen therapy can effectively reduce global spasticity in bilateral lower extremities at lower doses and allows precise dose titration to manage spasticity optimally. In complex patients with spasticity and multiple medical comorbidities, multidisciplinary teamwork is required to assess ITB safety and deliver timely intervention to prevent secondary complications of spasticity and improve quality of life.

The Impact of Intraoperative Glucagon on the Diagnostic Accuracy of Intraoperative Cholangiogram for the Diagnosis of Choledocholithiasis: Experience from a Large Tertiary Care Center.

A proportion of patients who undergo intraoperative cholangiogram (IOC) do not have bile duct stones at the time of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), either due to the spontaneous passage of stones or a false-positive IOC. Glucagon has been utilized as an inexpensive tool to allow the passage of micro-choledocholithiasis to the duodenum and resolve filling defects caused by stones or air bubbles. The purpose of our study is to understand the change in diagnostic accuracy of IOC to detect choledocholithiasis with intraoperative glucagon.

Spatiotemporal analysis of HPV vaccination and associated neighborhood-level disparities in Texas-an ecological study.

Background: HPV is responsible for most cervical, oropharyngeal, anal, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. The HPV vaccine has decreased cervical cancer incidence, but only 49% of Texas adolescents have initiated the vaccine. Texas shows great variation in HPV vaccination rates.

Changes in Microwave Ablation Zone Dimensions after Transarterial Embolization in an Ex Vivo Human Kidney Perfusion Model.

Purpose: To utilize a novel ex vivo perfused human renal model and quantify microwave ablation (MWA) size differences in renal tissue when combining MWA with transarterial embolization (TAE).

Materials And Methods: Human kidneys (n = 5) declined for transplantation were obtained and connected to a fluoroscopy-compatible ex vivo perfusion system. Two ablations-1 standard MWA and 1 TAE-MWA-were performed in each kidney for 2 minutes at 100 W using a MWA system (Solero Angiodynamics).

In patients with cancer, spontaneous renal bleeding can stem from a range of underlying factors, necessitating precise diagnostic tools for effective patient management. Benign and malignant renal tumors are among the primary culprits, with angiomyolipomas and renal cell carcinomas being the most common among them. Vascular anomalies, infections, ureteral obstructions, and coagulation disorders can also contribute to renal-related bleeding.

Management of failed flow diversion for intracranial aneurysm beyond the first 6 months of follow-up: an international Delphi consensus.

Objective: The placement of flow-diverting devices has become a common method of treating unruptured intracranial aneurysms of the internal carotid artery. The progressive improvement of aneurysm occlusion after treatment-with low complication and rupture rates-has led to a dilemma regarding the management of aneurysms in which occlusion has not occurred within 6-24 months. The authors aimed to identify clinical consensus regarding management of intracranial aneurysms displaying persistent filling 6-24 months after flow diversion and to ascertain questions that may drive future investigation.

Ectopic cervical thymoma in myasthenia gravis: a case report.

Background: Ectopic cervical thymoma (ECT) is an extremely rare tumor, especially in association with myasthenia gravis (MG).

Case Presentation: We report a case of myasthenia gravis with an ectopic thymoma in the neck, whose myasthenic symptoms significantly improved after complete removal of the mass. A 55-year-old woman with generalized myasthenia gravis (MG) experienced worsening neuromuscular weakness after abruptly discontinuing pyridostigmine.

Incident heart failure in chronic kidney disease: proteomics informs biology and risk stratification.

Background And Aims: Incident heart failure (HF) among individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) incurs hospitalizations that burden patients and health care systems. There are few preventative therapies, and the Pooled Cohort equations to Prevent Heart Failure (PCP-HF) perform poorly in the setting of CKD. New drug targets and better risk stratification are urgently needed.

Purpose Of Review: The studies on chromatin-modifying enzymes and how they respond to different stimuli within the cell have revolutionized our understanding of epigenetics. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent studies on epigenetic mechanisms implicated in heart failure.

Recent Findings: We focus on the major mechanisms and the conceptual advances in epigenetics as evidenced by studies in humans and mouse models of heart failure.

Effect of pre-emptive rituximab on EBV DNA levels and prevention of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in pediatric kidney transplant recipients: A case series from the pediatric nephrology research consortium.

Background: There are scant data on the effect of rituximab on EBV DNA levels and prevention of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) in pediatric kidney transplant recipients with EBV DNAemia.

Methods: Kidney transplant recipients with EBV DNAemia treated with rituximab to prevent PTLD between 7/1999 and 7/2019 at five pediatric centers were included. Those with confirmed PTLD at the onset of rituximab were excluded.

The fibro-adipogenic progenitor APOD+DCN+LUM+ cell population in aggressive carcinomas.

We identified a progenitor cell population highly enriched in samples from invasive and chemo-resistant carcinomas, characterized by a well-defined multigene signature including APOD, DCN, and LUM. This cell population has previously been labeled as consisting of inflammatory cancer-associated fibroblasts (iCAFs). The same signature characterizes naturally occurring fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) as well as stromal cells abundant in normal adipose tissue.

Here, we utilized a genetically-encoded lactate FRET biosensor to uncover subpopulations of distinct metabolic states among glutamatergic neurons.
