Depletion of Adipose Stroma-Like Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Potentiates Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy.

Cancer Res Commun

January 2025

Center for Metabolic and Degenerative Diseases, The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Disease, McGovern Medical School, Houston, Texas.

This study shows that populations of CAFs have distinct effects on pancreatic cancer progression and shows that depletion of CAFs expressing adipose markers potentiates tumor/metastasis suppression effects of immune checkpoint blockade.

Objective: 8-30 % of patients who present with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) have multiple intracranial aneurysms (MIA). Although prompt treatment to secure ruptured aneurysms (RA) is standard of care, there is no clear consensus regarding whether incidental unruptured aneurysms (UA) should be treated during the same procedural time as the RA. This study aims to examine the effect of treatment of UA during the same procedural time as treatment for the RA (concurrent treatment) versus delaying the treatment of an UA after discharging the patient (delayed treatment).

For decades, oncoplastic techniques have been an emerging, yet underutilized approach to breast cancer surgery. Recent developments in breast oncology support the potential for the omission of radiation therapy in a subset of patients eligible for breast-conserving surgery, which makes immediate reconstruction available to a much larger demographic. Although existing oncoplastic methods have offered durable and cosmetically acceptable results in select cases, there remains significant room for improvement.

When adjudicating sexual assault cases, it is imperative that attorneys are educated on the incident characteristics relevant to their case and that expert witnesses are prepared to consult and/or testify regarding relevant science. Most reported sexual assault cases occur when at least one of the relevant parties has consumed alcohol, which has neurochemical, behavioral, psychological, and cognitive effects that are important to consider relative to the facts of the case. Nearly a decade ago, Connell (2015) provided an overview of research relevant to an expert witness's role in these types of cases.

Introduction: Spasticity is one of the most common secondary complications following a spinal cord injury (SCI), which can significantly debilitate a patient irrespective of the severity of the injury. Intrathecal baclofen therapy can effectively reduce global spasticity in bilateral lower extremities at lower doses and allows precise dose titration to manage spasticity optimally. In complex patients with spasticity and multiple medical comorbidities, multidisciplinary teamwork is required to assess ITB safety and deliver timely intervention to prevent secondary complications of spasticity and improve quality of life.

A proportion of patients who undergo intraoperative cholangiogram (IOC) do not have bile duct stones at the time of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), either due to the spontaneous passage of stones or a false-positive IOC. Glucagon has been utilized as an inexpensive tool to allow the passage of micro-choledocholithiasis to the duodenum and resolve filling defects caused by stones or air bubbles. The purpose of our study is to understand the change in diagnostic accuracy of IOC to detect choledocholithiasis with intraoperative glucagon.

Purpose: To utilize a novel ex vivo perfused human renal model and quantify microwave ablation (MWA) size differences in renal tissue when combining MWA with transarterial embolization (TAE).

Materials And Methods: Human kidneys (n = 5) declined for transplantation were obtained and connected to a fluoroscopy-compatible ex vivo perfusion system. Two ablations-1 standard MWA and 1 TAE-MWA-were performed in each kidney for 2 minutes at 100 W using a MWA system (Solero Angiodynamics).

In patients with cancer, spontaneous renal bleeding can stem from a range of underlying factors, necessitating precise diagnostic tools for effective patient management. Benign and malignant renal tumors are among the primary culprits, with angiomyolipomas and renal cell carcinomas being the most common among them. Vascular anomalies, infections, ureteral obstructions, and coagulation disorders can also contribute to renal-related bleeding.

Objective: The placement of flow-diverting devices has become a common method of treating unruptured intracranial aneurysms of the internal carotid artery. The progressive improvement of aneurysm occlusion after treatment-with low complication and rupture rates-has led to a dilemma regarding the management of aneurysms in which occlusion has not occurred within 6-24 months. The authors aimed to identify clinical consensus regarding management of intracranial aneurysms displaying persistent filling 6-24 months after flow diversion and to ascertain questions that may drive future investigation.

Background: Ectopic cervical thymoma (ECT) is an extremely rare tumor, especially in association with myasthenia gravis (MG).

Case Presentation: We report a case of myasthenia gravis with an ectopic thymoma in the neck, whose myasthenic symptoms significantly improved after complete removal of the mass. A 55-year-old woman with generalized myasthenia gravis (MG) experienced worsening neuromuscular weakness after abruptly discontinuing pyridostigmine.

Background And Aims: Incident heart failure (HF) among individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) incurs hospitalizations that burden patients and health care systems. There are few preventative therapies, and the Pooled Cohort equations to Prevent Heart Failure (PCP-HF) perform poorly in the setting of CKD. New drug targets and better risk stratification are urgently needed.

Peripheral Levels of the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in Coronary Artery Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

J Tehran Heart Cent

October 2023

Network of Immunity in Infection, Malignancy and Autoimmunity, Universal Scientific Education and Research Network, Tehran, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines blood levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) compared to healthy controls, revealing lower BDNF levels in the CHD group.
  • The analysis included data from 12 studies involving over 2,300 participants, using statistical methods to compare results and assess quality.
  • Findings suggest that BDNF could be a potential biomarker for CHD, indicating a need for more high-quality research on its role in disease severity and pathophysiology.

Epigenetic regulation of heart failure.

Curr Opin Cardiol

July 2024

Center for Cardiovascular Genetics, Institute of Molecular Medicine and Department of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston, Texas, USA.

Purpose Of Review: The studies on chromatin-modifying enzymes and how they respond to different stimuli within the cell have revolutionized our understanding of epigenetics. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent studies on epigenetic mechanisms implicated in heart failure.

Recent Findings: We focus on the major mechanisms and the conceptual advances in epigenetics as evidenced by studies in humans and mouse models of heart failure.

Background: There are scant data on the effect of rituximab on EBV DNA levels and prevention of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) in pediatric kidney transplant recipients with EBV DNAemia.

Methods: Kidney transplant recipients with EBV DNAemia treated with rituximab to prevent PTLD between 7/1999 and 7/2019 at five pediatric centers were included. Those with confirmed PTLD at the onset of rituximab were excluded.

We identified a progenitor cell population highly enriched in samples from invasive and chemo-resistant carcinomas, characterized by a well-defined multigene signature including APOD, DCN, and LUM. This cell population has previously been labeled as consisting of inflammatory cancer-associated fibroblasts (iCAFs). The same signature characterizes naturally occurring fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) as well as stromal cells abundant in normal adipose tissue.

Lactate, an intermediary between glycolysis and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, reflects the metabolic state of neurons. Here, we utilized a genetically-encoded lactate FRET biosensor to uncover subpopulations of distinct metabolic states among glutamatergic neurons. Neurons within specific subpopulations exhibited correlated lactate flux patterns that stemmed from inherent cellular properties rather than neuronal interconnectivity.
