December 2023

Texas Emergency Medicine Research Center, McGovern Medical School, Houston, TX, United States; Department of Emergency Medicine, McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), Houston, TX, United States. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the relationship between first responder (FR) interventions, specifically CPR and AED use, and survival outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs).
  • Only a small number of agencies showed a positive association between FR interventions and favorable neurological survival outcomes, with CPR having fewer positive results compared to AED use.
  • Agencies with better outcomes tended to handle more OHCAs but had lower rates of FR CPR and AED interventions, indicating that factors other than the frequency of intervention might influence survival rates.

Obesity is a pandemic that disproportionately affects children from vulnerable populations in the USA. Current treatment approaches in primary care settings in the USA have been reported to be insufficient at managing pediatric obesity, primarily due to implementation challenges for healthcare systems and barriers for families. While the literature has examined the efficacy of pediatric obesity interventions focused on internal validity, it lacks sufficient reporting and analysis of external validity necessary for successful translation to primary care settings.

Introduction: Differentiating the soft tissue abscess from other types of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) poses a particular challenge because they have similar physical evaluation findings, but each disease has a different course, outcome, and treatment. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasonography for diagnosis of soft tissue abscess in the emergency departments.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search of MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar, from inception to January 2023, was conducted to identify relevant studies investigating the diagnostic performance of point-of-care ultrasonography for identification of abscess.

Biallelic loss-of-function mutations in the syntaxin 3 gene have been linked to a severe retinal dystrophy in humans that presents in early childhood. In mouse models, biallelic inactivation of the syntaxin 3 gene in photoreceptors rapidly leads to their death. What is not known is whether a monoallelic syntaxin 3 loss-of-function mutation might cause photoreceptor loss with advancing age.

Cells often alter metabolic strategies under nutrient-deprived conditions to support their survival and growth. Characterizing metabolic reprogramming in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is of emerging importance in cancer research and patient care. However, recent technologies only measure a subset of metabolites and cannot provide in situ measurements.

Translational Psychiatry Laboratory, Graduate Program in Health Sciences, The University of Southern Santa Catarina (UNESC), Criciúma, SC, Brazil; Translational Psychiatry Program, Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, McGovern Medical School, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), Houston, TX, USA; Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders, Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, McGovern Medical School, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), Houston, TX, USA; Neuroscience Graduate Program, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Houston, TX, USA.

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic, severe, and multifactorial psychiatric disorder. Although biological rhythms alterations, sodium potassium pump (Na, K-ATPase) changes, and oxidative stress appear to play a critical role in the etiology and pathophysiology of BD, the inter-connection between them has not been described. Therefore this study evaluated the association between biological rhythms, Na, K-ATPase, and oxidative stress parameters in BD patients and the preclinical paradoxical sleep deprivation model (PSD).

Article Synopsis
  • Some skin problems can look like squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), which makes it tough to tell them apart.
  • Seven women were treated for cSCC but, after checking more closely, doctors found different skin issues instead.
  • Instead of surgery, these women were treated for the other problems and got better, showing that not every case called cSCC needs surgery.

While our understanding of the molecular biology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has grown, the etiology of the disease, especially the involvement of peripheral infection, remains a challenge. In this study, we hypothesize that peripheral infection represents a risk factor for AD pathology. To test our hypothesis, APP/PS1 mice underwent cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) surgery to develop a polymicrobial infection or non-CLP surgery.
