Current guidelines recommend against the use of phenytoin following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) but consider other anticonvulsants, such as levetiracetam, acceptable. Our objective was to evaluate the risk of poor functional outcomes, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and delayed seizures in aSAH patients treated with levetiracetam versus phenytoin. Medical records of patients with aSAH admitted between 2005-2012 receiving anticonvulsant prophylaxis with phenytoin or levetiracetam for >72 hours were reviewed.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory disease with evidence of increased production of proinflammatory cytokines in the intestinal mucosa. Folate immune (EC90 vaccine with GPI-0100 adjuvant followed by EC17) is a novel folate-targeted hapten immunotherapy designed to exploit the overexpression of folate receptors on renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cells. In this open-label, phase I/II clinical study, we report the safety, pharmacokinetics, and antitumor activity of folate immune with concurrent interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-α (IFN-α) in patients with recurrent or metastatic RCC. Twenty-four patients were enrolled.

This review is presented in three segments: (1) important background concepts, (2) recent reports from regional geographically defined cohorts, and (3) prognosis research from the National Institutes of Health Neonatal Research Network. Extending the use of intensive care to newborns of lower gestational ages will unavoidably result in a higher proportion and a higher absolute number of survivors with morbidity, unless other changes in practice offset the increased risk associated with decreasing gestational age. In geographically defined cohort studies, the proportion of periviable newborns delivered in perinatal centers and the practices around foregoing and withdrawing intensive care are two important determinants of outcomes following periviable birth.

Preeclampsia, the leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, has been recently considered not only a pregnancy disease but also a risk factor for developing diseases later in life. Preeclampsia is becoming a disease of interest to internists and not just obstetricians. Women who have had preeclampsia seem to be at higher risk of premature death, mortality from ischemic heart disease, cardiovascular diseases including ischemic heart disease and hypertension, fatal and non-fatal stroke, venous thromboembolism, renal failure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and cognitive defects, although they appear surprisingly protected from cancer.

Unlike many other vertebrates, a healthy mammalian retina does not grow throughout life and lacks a ciliary margin zone capable of actively generating new neurons. The isolation of stem-like cells from the ciliary epithelium has led to speculation that the mammalian retina and/or surrounding tissues may retain neurogenic potential capable of responding to retinal damage. Using genetically altered mouse lines with varying degrees of retinal ganglion cell loss, we show that the retinal margin responds to ganglion cell loss by prolonging specific neurogenic activity, as characterized by increased numbers of Atoh7(LacZ)-expressing cells.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) are frequently diagnosed at unresectable stage and remain a medical challenge.
