Animal health and veterinary medicine are integral to One Health, contributing important perspectives on complex challenges arising at the human-animal-environment interface. The published Competency-Based Veterinary Education (CBVE) framework dedicates a domain of competence and three associated sub-competencies to public health (Domain 4). However, a panel of One Health scientists sought to establish additional outcomes believed necessary to support core veterinary curricula related to veterinary public health (VPH)/One Health.

Impact of fatty acid composition on markers of exocrine pancreatic stimulation in dogs.

PLoS One

August 2023

Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, United States of America.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic pancreatitis in dogs is managed through a low-fat diet, and research indicates that medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) may lead to lower pancreatic enzyme release compared to long-chain fatty acids (LCFA).
  • A study was conducted on 12 healthy dogs, feeding them meals with varying fat types (MCT, saturated LCFA, unsaturated LCFA) and measuring serum markers over time.
  • Results showed that only serum triglyceride levels were significantly affected, with the MCT diet leading to lower triglycerides compared to LCFA diets, though MCT had higher levels than the control diet by 120 and 180 minutes post-meal.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were two-fold: (1) to determine if a feeder system providing individualized food access and automatic dispensing of meals makes weight-loss programs in multi-cat homes easier for cat owners; and (2) to assess if feeding six meals daily reduces food-seeking behavior and increases calorie requirements vs two meals per day.

Methods: Adult cats with body condition scores (BCSs) of 7/9 or greater underwent a weight-loss plan for up to 6 months using a traditional feeding bowl with two meals per day (B2) or an automatic feeder with two meals (A2) or six meals (A6) per day. Cats were weighed at weeks 0, 2, 4, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 and food intake was adjusted to maintain weight-loss rates between 0.

Small Animal Clinical Sciences, The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, 2407 River Drive, Knoxville, TN 37996, USA.

To provide the best dietary recommendations to maintain optimal patient health, veterinarians must be able to assess a patient's nutritional status and offer necessary diet adjustment recommendations. Because obtaining accurate diet histories and answering owner questions about specific diet options can be time-consuming, this article summarizes efficient methods to complete this process. Short case illustrations of common nutrition calculation equations and an example diet history form are included.

Critical weight loss, as defined by ≥5% decrease in body weight, has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in human patients with cancers of the head and neck. Weight loss has anecdotally been reported to occur frequently in veterinary patients undergoing radiation therapy and is hypothesized to be more severe in patients with cancers of the head and neck, along with those hospitalized during radiation therapy. The primary objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the occurrence of critical weight loss in canine cancer bearing patients undergoing either definitive or palliative radiation protocols and to determine if weight changes were associated with radiation toxicity, tumour location or patient hospitalization status.

Although the thyroid hormone has stimulatory effects and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) has inhibitory effects on prepubertal Leydig cell (LC) differentiation, it is important to find out whether the stimulatory effect of thyroid hormone could overcome the inhibitory effect of AMH on postnatal LC differentiation. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to use the anti-Mullerian hormone overexpressing mouse (AMH++) model to understand the simultaneous effects of AMH and thyroid hormone on postnatal LC differentiation, proliferation, maturation and function and to test whether the inhibitory effect of AMH could be overcome by the stimulatory effect of the thyroid hormone. Four age groups (7, 21, 40, 90 days) of control (C57BL/6; C) and AMH++ were used.
