Introduction/purpose: There are varying international recommendations regarding the minimum level of disinfection required for ultrasound transducers used in percutaneous procedures. While some guidelines recommend high-level disinfection (HLD), others question the additional benefit this delivers over low-level disinfection (LLD).

Methods: This narrative review identifies current guidelines and evaluates the evidence used to support disinfection recommendations for ultrasound transducers used in percutaneous procedures.

Background And Aim: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is associated with an increased risk of extrahepatic morbidity. We compared the incidence of cancers in adults admitted to Queensland hospitals with MASLD with that for the Queensland population and examined the association between cirrhosis and type 2 diabetes and the development of extrahepatic cancers.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we identified all cancers (Queensland Cancer Registry) after the first hospitalization with MASLD during Jul-2007 to Dec-2019, estimated age-standardized incidence (ASI) of cancers, and compared that with the ASI in the Queensland population (incidence rate ratios [IRR]).

Objectives: The aim of this study is to audit 7 years of data with a 3 year follow up from a high-volume stone centre performing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to evaluate efficacy in stone clearance compared to existing knowledge and understand reasons for this performance.

Methods: Patients who received ESWL treatment for renal or proximal ureteric stones at a single centre between January 2012 and January 2019 (to allow minimum 3 year follow up) were retrieved. A retrospective analysis was performed cross referencing for stone size, location, treatment and need for further procedures.

The prevalence and perceived effectiveness of using a medication-swallowing lubricant in aged care facilities across Australia.

Objective: To explore the extent of use and perceived effectiveness of using a medication lubricant that is specifically designed to help people who struggle to swallow their solid medications whole.

Method: Health care workers of varying professional levels in aged care facilities (ACFs) across Australia who are involved in medication administration were invited to participate in a structured online survey.

Results: Of the 355 health care workers who completed the survey, 48% had used the medication lubricant to aid administration of whole and/or crushed solid oral dosage forms, and of these 89% agreed with the statement that "it is effective method to facilitate medication swallowing in residents.

Recent research has highlighted the role of plasma-activated medium (PAM) as a regulator of the innate immune system, where macrophages are the main effector cells. A 33-year-old man presented with acute dyspnoea and profound hypoxaemia, and had clubbing, greying of hair, orthodeoxia and fine inspiratory crackles. CT chest showed established pulmonary fibrosis in a usual interstitial pneumonia pattern. Additional investigations revealed a small patent foramen ovale, pancytopenia, and oesophageal varices and portal hypertensive gastropathy from liver cirrhosis.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat to society due to the increasing emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria that are not susceptible to our last line of defence antibiotics. Exacerbating this issue is a severe gap in antibiotic development, with no new clinically relevant classes of antibiotics developed in the last two decades. The combination of the rapidly increasing emergence of resistance and scarcity of new antibiotics in the clinical pipeline means there is an urgent need for new efficacious treatment strategies.
