The use of fast transients for fault detection in long transmission networks makes the generation of controlled transients crucial. Objective: The purpose of this prospective study was to investigate the prevalence and severity of radiographic abnormalities of the interspinous spaces (ISSs) in the thoracolumbar vertebral column of unbroken yearlings and to compare these findings with a group of older trained Thoroughbred horses without perceived back pain.

Animals: Yearlings (n = 47) and trained horses (55); 102 total.

Procedures: Each horse underwent a digital radiographic study of the thoracolumbar vertebral column (T7-L3) and each space graded for narrowing of the ISSs, increased opacity, radiolucency, and modeling of the cranial and caudal margins of 2 contiguous dorsal spinous processes (DSPs).

In view of its potential applicability in photoconversion processes, we here discuss the optoelectronic features of the recently proposed tin-based oxynitride material for (photo)catalysis, InSnON. In detail, by combining Density Functional and Many-Body Perturbation Theory, we compute the electronic and optical properties discussing how they vary from the nonpolar phase to the more stable polar one. After providing a detailed, unbiased, description of the optoelectronic features of the two phases, we have finally calculated the Spectroscopic Limited Maximum Efficiency and obtained data that further witness the relevance of InSnON for solar energy conversion processes.

Breast lesion detection employing state of the art microwave systems provide a safe, non-ionizing technique that can differentiate healthy and non-healthy tissues by exploiting their dielectric properties. In this paper, a microwave apparatus for breast lesion detection is used to accumulate clinical data from subjects undergoing breast examinations at the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Perugia Hospital, Perugia, Italy. This paper presents the first ever clinical demonstration and comparison of a microwave ultra-wideband (UWB) device augmented by machine learning with subjects who are simultaneously undergoing conventional breast examinations.

The Gate Control Theory of pain, published more than half a century ago to explain nociceptive modulation of peripheral sensory input, assumes inhibition of incoming nociceptive (pain) information produced by mechanical stimulation. To verify the presence of such a gate control mechanism at the level of the human trigeminal system, we evaluated the effects on pain sensation of a proprioceptive trigeminal stimulation induced by mandibular extension. We found that such a stimulation, applied for 7 min, was effective in increasing both the threshold and tolerance of tooth pain induced by electrical activation of dental nociceptors.

Bortezomib (BTZ) is a first-in-class proteasome inhibitor approved for the therapy of multiple myeloma that also displays unique regulatory activities on immune cells. The enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) is a tryptophan metabolizing enzyme exerting potent immunoregulatory effects when expressed in dendritic cells (DCs), the most potent antigen-presenting cells capable of promoting either immunity or tolerance. We previously demonstrated that, in inflammatory conditions, IDO1 is subjected to proteasomal degradation in DCs, turning these cells from immunoregulatory to immunostimulatory.

Ubiquitous graphene is a stricly 2D material representing an ideal adsorbing platform due to its large specific surface area as well as its mechanical strength and resistance to both thermal and chemical stresses. However, graphene as a bulk material has the tendency to form irreversible agglomerates leading to 3D graphitic structures with a significant decrease of the area available for adsorption and no room for gas intercalation. In this paper, a novel nanoporous graphite formed by graphtriyne sheets is introduced; its 3D structure is theoretically assessed by means of electronic structure and molecular dynamics computations within the DFT level of theory.

Peroxidases catalyze the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Two pathways may occur: one entailing the intermediate formation of NO(2) and the other implying the generation of peroxynitrite. The products of nitrite (NO(2) (-) ) oxidation by salivary peroxidase (SPO) and commercial bovine lactoperoxidase (LPO) are studied by utilizing an electrochemical assay that allows the direct, continuous monitoring of NO and/or NO(2) and by HPLC to assess nitrates at the end of the reaction.
