Background: Cryoglobulinemia, the presence of serum cryoglobulins which are immunoglobulins or complement components that precipitate at temperatures below 37 °C, commonly present with cutaneous manifestations initially, but are more rarely associated with ocular manifestations. To our knowledge, we report the first case of a patient presenting with sequential central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) associated with cryoglobulinemia.

Case Presentation: A 69-year-old female with a history of indolent B-cell lymphoma associated cryoglobulinemia, treated hepatitis B infection and CRAO in the left eye presented with acute vision loss and diffuse retinal whitening with a cherry red spot in her right eye, suggestive of sequential CRAO.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute annular outer retinopathy (AAOR) is a rare eye condition that has been documented in a limited number of cases, with this report being the first involving a patient with invasive ductal breast carcinoma.
  • The patient experienced visual symptoms like photopsias and loss of vision three weeks before being diagnosed with breast cancer, with imaging revealing distinct changes in the retina, including an outer annular white ring and RPE atrophy.
  • This case enhances the understanding of AAOR’s features, progression, and relationship with other health conditions, contributing valuable data to the existing medical literature.

Purpose: Multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) shows great utility as a screening tool to detect early hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy, but its widespread use is limited by the lack of accessibility and long test duration. In this study, we evaluated a novel concentric 5-ring mfERG stimulus to provide a simplified and rapid protocol for screening HCQ toxicity.

Methods: Patients referred for HCQ retinopathy screening were consented to this observational cross-sectional study.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) relapse implies a poor prognosis and demands emergency treatment. Leukemic infiltration of the anterior segment can masquerade as intraocular inflammation; a high index of suspicion for this complication is essential. We describe a case of ocular relapse in a 2-year-old male on maintenance therapy for ALL.

Flashes and floaters: a survey of Canadian ophthalmology residents' practice patterns.

Can J Ophthalmol

October 2017

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ont; The University of Ottawa Eye Institute, The Ottawa Hospital General Campus, Ottawa, Ont. Electronic address:

Background: Residents are often the first point of contact in assessing patients who present with "flashes and floaters" in the emergency ophthalmology clinic. Most often, these symptoms are attributed to a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), which may be associated with a retinal tear in up to 14% of cases. A proper peripheral retinal exam is, thus, imperative, and techniques other than scleral depression may not be sufficient.

Purpose: To assess the long-term sequelae, principally time-to-first-recurrence, of phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) for the treatment of recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES).

Methods: A retrospective case series was performed. Thirty-nine eyes in 33 patients with RCES required PTK and were treated using the VISX STAR Excimer Laser System.

Wavefront-guided laser eye surgery has been recently introduced and holds the promise of correcting not only defocus and astigmatism in patients but also higher-order aberrations. Research is just beginning on the implementation of wavefront-guided methods in optical solutions, such as phase-plate-based spectacles, as alternatives to surgery. We investigate the theoretical differences between the implementation of wavefront-guided surgical and phase plate corrections.

Baseline IOP predicts selective laser trabeculoplasty success at 1 year post-treatment: results from a randomised clinical trial.

Br J Ophthalmol

September 2005

Department of Ophthalmology, The University of Ottawa Eye Institute, 501 Smyth Road, Ottawa, ON K1H 8L6 Canada.

Background/aims: The efficacy and safety of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) has been found to be equivalent to argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT). Since SLT produces significantly less disturbance to the trabecular meshwork and is theoretically more repeatable than ALT, it has potential to replace ALT as the standard procedure to treat medically uncontrolled open angle glaucoma. This study's objective is to determine factors that predict successful SLT at 1 year post-treatment.
