The generalized estimating equations method (GEE) is commonly applied to analyze data obtained from family studies. GEE is well known for its robustness on misspecification of correlation structure. However, the unbalanced distribution of family sizes and complicated genetic relatedness structure within each family may challenge GEE performance.

Background: Candidemia is the fourth most common nosocomial bloodstream infection. Endocarditis from candidemia is a rare but possibly fatal complication. The efficacy of amphotericin and echinocandins for induction and azoles for suppression has been well studied.

Birth weight is a consistent predictor of morbidity and survivability in infancy and later life. This study aims to assess the accuracy of the mother's perception of size at birth to predict low birth weight(LBW). This study used data from Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS 2016).

Effective experimental prophylactic vaccines against viral pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) have been shown to protect the host through T and/or B lymphocyte-driven responses. Previously, we found a live-attenuated HSV-1 mutant, 0ΔNLS used as a prophylactic vaccine, provided significant protection against subsequent ocular HSV-1 challenge aligned with a robust neutralizing antibody response. Yet, how the virus mutant elicited the humoral immune response relative to parental virus was unknown.

Corneal transparency is an essential characteristic necessary for normal vision. In response to microbial infection, the integrity of the cornea can become compromised as a result of the inflammatory response and the ensuing tissue pathology including neovascularization (NV) and collagen lamellae destruction. We have previously found complement activation contributes to cornea pathology-specifically, denervation in response to HSV-1 infection.

Despite clinical and technological advances, serious gaps remain in delivering genetic services due to disparities in workforce distribution and lack of coverage for genetic testing and counseling. Genetic services delivery, particularly in medically underserved populations, may rely heavily on primary care providers (PCPs). This study aims to identify barriers to integrating genetic services and primary care, and strategies to support integration, by conducting a scoping review.

The number of HIV cases attributed to heterosexual contact and the proportion of women among HIV positive individuals has increased worldwide. Russia is a country with the highest rates of newly diagnosed HIV infections in the region, and the infection spreads beyond traditional risk groups. While young women are affected disproportionately, knowledge of HIV risk behaviors in women in the general population remains limited.

Glycine cleavage system (GCS) catalyzes the degradation of glycine and disruption of its components encoded by GLDC, AMT and GCSH are the only known causes of glycine encephalopathy, also known as non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH). In this report, we describe a consanguineous family with one child who presented with NKH, but harbored no pathogenic variants in any of the three genes linked to this condition. Whole-exome sequencing revealed a novel homozygous missense variant in exon 9 of SLC6A9 NM_201649.
