Dermal fibroblasts (DFs) share several qualities with mesenchymal stem cell/multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) derived from various tissues, including adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (ASCs). ASCs and DFs are morphologically comparable and both cell types can be culture expanded through the utilization of their plastic-adherence properties. Despite these similar characteristics, numerous studies indicate that ASC and DF display distinct therapeutic benefits in clinical applications.

We report a patient who has cognitive sequalae including verbal retrieval deficits after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). The cortico-caudate-thalamic circuit involving the pre-Supplementary Motor Area (pre-SMA) has been proposed to underlie verbal retrieval functions. We hypothesized that High Definition-transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS) targeting the pre-SMA would selectively modulate this circuit to remediate verbal retrieval deficits.

Article Synopsis
  • Measures of fitness, like aerobic scope (AS), help predict how species react to environmental changes, particularly with rising water temperatures.
  • Maximum metabolic rate (MMR) is influenced by an individual's oxygen delivery ability, and recent findings highlight that the activity of red blood cell carbonic anhydrase (RBC CA) limits oxygen delivery in red drum fish.
  • In experiments, increased temperature raised RBC CA activity and MMR significantly, but no direct relationship was found between RBC CA activity and MMR or AS, suggesting RBC CA does not predict individual metabolic performance despite its thermal sensitivity.

Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi", University of Bologna, Viale Del Risorgimento 2, 40136, Bologna, Italy; Marconi Institute for Creativity (MIC), Villa Griffone, Via Dei Celestini 1, 40037, Sasso Marconi, Italy.

EEG alpha synchronization, especially in posterior parietal cortical regions of the right hemisphere, is indicative of high internal processing demands that are typically involved in divergent thinking (DT). During the course of DT, as ideation proceeds, ideas tend to become more creative, being more likely to be drawn from new conceptual categories through the use of the cognitive mechanism of flexibility. The present study investigated whether EEG alpha synchronization can be modulated by flexibility in DT by comparing cortical activation patterns during the switch of category (switching) and the stay in the same category (clustering).

A robust literature suggests men typically engage in more general and heavy alcohol use than women, and that many health disparities related to drinking are more prevalent among Latino men as compared to non-Latino White men. Researchers posit that adherence to masculine gender role scripts may be one reason men choose to drink alcohol. To date, research linking masculinity to drinking among Latinos has been mixed and has used broad measures for masculinity that are arguably quite distal from alcohol outcomes.

We review the literature to argue the importance of the occurrence of crucial events in the dynamics of physiological processes. Crucial events are interpreted as short time intervals of turbulence, and the time distance between two consecutive crucial events is a waiting time distribution density with an inverse power law (IPL) index μ, with μ < 3 generating non-stationary behavior. The non-stationary condition is characterized by two regimes of the IPL index: (a) perennial non-stationarity, with 1 < μ < 2 and (b) slow evolution toward the stationary regime, with 2 < μ < 3.

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, The University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, Texas; Department of Pediatrics and Women's Health, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, The University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, Texas.

Current statistics related to cancer incidence and cancer-related death rates clearly show that specific racial/ethnic minorities are more likely to be diagnosed and/or die with cancer. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States and it disproportionately affects the non-Hispanic Black or African American (AA) population. When compared to the non-Hispanic White (nHW) population, incidence and death rates in AAs are 28% and 60% higher, respectively.
