The overexpression and misfolding of viral proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) may cause cellular stress, thereby inducing a cytoprotective, proteostatic host response involving phosphorylation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit alpha (eIF2α). Here, we show that hepatitis A virus, a positive-strand RNA virus responsible for infectious hepatitis, adopts a stress-resistant, eIF2α-independent mechanism of translation to ensure the synthesis of viral proteins within the infected liver. Cap-independent translation directed by the hepatovirus internal ribosome entry site and productive hepatovirus infection of mice both require platelet-derived growth factor subunit A (PDGFA)-associated protein 1 (PDAP1), a small phosphoprotein of unknown function with eIF4E-binding activity.

Homologations of organic molecules that add a carbon atom to the substrate are useful in drug discovery to access compounds with improved properties that otherwise present a synthetic challenge. Carboxylic acids are present in many bioactive molecules and are widely available building blocks for chemical synthesis, yet their direct homologation is unknown. This valuable transformation currently necessitates implementation of multistep processes that require the use of carboxylic acid derivatives rather than the native substrates, and commonly involves highly reactive and toxic reagents.

Purpose: Cochlear implant (CI) recipients who listen with a hearing aid (HA) in the contralateral ear, known as bimodal listeners, demonstrate individual variability in speech recognition in noise. This variability may be due in part to differences in the processing delays of the CI and HA devices. Young children who experience adversity are at increased risk for developing psychological difficulties across the lifespan. Among community samples, parent-child relationship dynamics interact with child effortful control to predict child behavior problems. The nature of these associations has not been examined among children who have experienced early childhood adversity and who may be particularly sensitive to familial effects on child development.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary malignant brain tumor diagnosed in adults, carrying with it an extremely poor prognosis and limited options for effective treatment. Various cell therapies have emerged as promising candidates for GBM treatment but fail in the clinic due to poor tumor trafficking, poor transplantation efficiency, and high systemic toxicity. In this study, we design, characterize, and test a 3D-printed cell delivery platform that can enhance the survival of therapeutic cells implanted in the GBM resection cavity.

Fires at the wildland-urban interface (WUI) are increasing in magnitude and frequency, emitting organic aerosol (OA) with unknown composition and atmospheric impacts. In this study, we investigated the chemical composition of OA produced through the 600 °C pyrolysis of ten urban materials in nitrogen, which were subsequently aged under UV light for 2 h. Fast and accurate assessment of skin mechanics holds great promise in diagnosing various epidermal diseases, yet substantial challenges remain in developing simple and wearable strategies for continuous monitoring. Here, we present a design concept, named active near-infrared spectroscopy patch (ANIRP) for continuously mapping skin mechanics. ANIRP addresses these challenges by integrating near-infrared (NIR) sensing with mechanical actuators, enabling rapid measurement (<1 s) of Young's modulus, high spatial sensing density (~1 cm), and high spatial sensitivity (<1 mm).

Importance: There is limited evidence guiding surgeons in how much mesh to resect when treating mesh complications.
Objective: The aim of the study was to compare rates of recurrent prolapse after mesh excisional surgical procedures for prolapse mesh complications.
Study Design: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study included patients, identified by Current Procedural Terminology codes, who were treated surgically for prolapse mesh complications at 8 institutions between 2010 and 2019.
