Objective: To determine the impact of testosterone therapy (TT) on the incidence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in a large cohort of hypogonadal males and to evaluate the relationship between TT in hypogonadal males and prostatic interventions.

Methods: We used the 2011-2020 International Business Machines Corporation MarketScan database to identify hypogonadal males above 18 years old and determine if they received TT. International Classification of Diseases, 9th and 10th Revisions, Current Procedural Terminology, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System Procedure Codes, and National Drug Code (NDC) codes were used for diagnoses, interventions, and medications.

Objective: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin condition affecting both mental and physical health. Although research has shown reduced physical activity levels among patients with AD, there is a scarcity of studies examining baseline mobility, which refers to the standard level of functional ambulation or movement capability. We analyzed the relationship between AD and baseline mobility among U.

When Vaping Isn't Actually Safer: A Death From Toxic Alcohol Contaminated Vape Juice.

Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office, and Departments of Pathology and Pediatrics, University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine, Reno, NV.

Vape juice is a diluent for e-cigarette active ingredients, nicotine or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Lack of strict regulation in vape juice production is a concern as ingredients and their concentrations may vary widely from the labeling.A 43-year-old woman was transported via ambulance to the hospital after ingesting homemade vape juice, presenting unresponsive with decerebrate posturing.

Electronic address:

Skeletal muscle atrophy is defined by wasting or decrease in muscle mass owing to injury, aging, malnutrition, chronic disuse, or physical consequences of chronic illness. Under normal physiological conditions, a network of signal transduction pathways serves to balance muscle protein synthesis and proteolysis; however, metabolic shifts occur from protein synthesis to protein degradation that leads to a reduction in cross-sectional myofibers and can result in loss of skeletal muscle mass (atrophy) over time. Recent evidence highlights posttranslational modifications (PTMs) such as acetylation and phosphorylation in contractile dysfunction and muscle wasting.

Stormwater is a vital resource and dynamic driver of terrestrial ecosystem processes. However, processes controlling interactions during and shortly after storms are often poorly seen and poorly sensed when direct observations are substituted with technological ones. We discuss how human observations complement technological ones and the benefits of scientists spending more time in the storm.

Electronic address:

Skeletal muscle differentiation involves activation of quiescent satellite cells to proliferate, differentiate and fuse to form new myofibers; this requires coordination of myogenic transcription factors. Myogenic transcription is tightly regulated by various intracellular signaling pathways, which include members of the protein kinase D (PKD) family. PKD is a family of serine-threonine kinases that regulate gene expression, protein secretion, cell proliferation, differentiation and inflammation.

According to the influential "Two Visual Pathways" hypothesis, the cortical visual system is segregated into two pathways, with the ventral, occipitotemporal pathway subserving object perception, and the dorsal, occipitoparietal pathway subserving the visuomotor control of action. However, growing evidence suggests that the dorsal pathway also plays a functional role in object perception. In the current article, we present evidence that the dorsal pathway contributes uniquely to the perception of a range of visuospatial attributes that are not redundant with representations in ventral cortex.

A Patient With Tricyclic Antidepressant Overdose With Catecholamine-Resistant Hypotension Rescued With Angiotensin II: A Case Report.

Dimens Crit Care Nurs

March 2021

Jacqueline Ferdowsali, DNP, MSN, BSN, ACNPC-AG, is an assistant professor at the University of Nevada Reno. She is the track coordinator for the adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner program. Her clinical practice is as an adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner with a pulmonary and tele-medicine service. Kameron Ferdowsali, MD, is an intensivist at Peace Health Medical Center. He also manages a tele-medicine critical care service. He has vast experience treating individuals with shock states.

This case report explores the novel use of angiotensin II (Giapreza) for the treatment of vasodilation in the setting of a tricyclic overdose. The purpose of this case is to describe how the use of angiotensin II can improve hemodynamic parameters and result in a dose reduction of other catecholamine vasopressors in vasodilatory shock. The use of angiotensin II is new to clinical practice and has the potential to change outcomes for patients.

Though citizen science programs have been broadly successful in diverse scientific fields, their adoption has lagged in some disciplines, including soil science and ecosystem ecology. Collaborations with citizen scientists may be viewed as a conundrum in these disciplines, which often require substantial labor and technical experience; citizen scientists could improve sampling capacity but may reduce sample quality or require training and oversight prior to and while performing specialized tasks. To demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating citizen scientists into soil biogeochemistry research, we conducted a proof-of-concept study in high-elevation meadows of the Sierra Nevada in California.

Our current understanding of the basal ganglia (BG) has facilitated the creation of computational models that have contributed novel theories, explored new functional anatomy and demonstrated results complementing physiological experiments. However, the utility of these models extends beyond these applications. Particularly in neuromorphic engineering, where the basal ganglia's role in computation is important for applications such as power efficient autonomous agents and model-based control strategies.

Efficiently passing messages in distributed spiking neural network simulation.

Efficiently passing spiking messages in a neural model is an important aspect of high-performance simulation. As the scale of networks has increased so has the size of the computing systems required to simulate them. In addition, the information exchange of these resources has become more of an impediment to performance.

Background: An increasing USA population, especially as a result of foreign immigration, has been the recent focus of healthcare research and policy debate. However, little is known about domestic immigration and its impact on the measures of health conditions and behaviours used to develop and evaluate public health policies and programmes. The objective of this research is to compare health conditions and behaviours between domestic immigrants and established residents in Nevada, the fastest-growing state in the USA.
