Article Synopsis
  • Social media use is rapidly increasing, especially in low- and middle-income countries, altering how information—including misinformation—is shared, which poses risks to global health.
  • The circulation of fake news can compromise public trust in scientific expertise and hinder evidence-based health interventions, as seen in Brazil's context of political distrust.
  • A study aimed at reducing dengue in Fortaleza faced resistance and fake news via WhatsApp, leading to the development of strategies to mitigate misinformation, but ultimately was interrupted by violence and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grievance-fueled sexual violence.

Front Psychol

March 2023

HM Prison and Probation Service,London, United Kingdom.

The grievance fueled violence paradigm encompasses various forms of targeted violence but has not yet been extended to the theoretical discussion of sexual violence. In this article, we argue that a wide range of sexual offenses can be usefully conceptualized as forms of grievance fueled violence. Indeed, our assertion that sexual violence is often grievance fueled is unoriginal.

Association of low-density neutrophils with lung function and disease progression in adult cystic fibrosis.

J Cyst Fibros

November 2023

Infectious and Immune Diseases Division, CHU de Québec Research Center, Laval University, Québec, QC, Canada; Department of Microbiology-Infectious Diseases and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Laval University, Québec, QC, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) neutrophils fail to eradicate infection despite their massive recruitment into the lung. While studies mostly focus on pathogen clearance by normal density neutrophils in CF, the contribution of low-density neutrophil (LDNs) subpopulations to disease pathogenesis remains unclear.

Methods: LDNs were isolated from whole blood donations of clinically stable adult CF patients and from healthy donors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the role of inflammation in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) and evaluates how two new anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), brivaracetam and lacosamide, affect immune cell activation.
  • Research shows that both AEDs do not negatively impact the survival or activation of immune cells at lower doses, but higher doses reduce CD8 T cell proliferation and certain markers.
  • Although these AEDs do not delay the onset of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), they improve the disease's clinical course, suggesting they may help reduce neuroaxonal damage in DRE.

The proprotein convertase SKI-1/S1P is a critical host factor for Nairobi sheep disease virus infectivity.

Virus Res

May 2023

Institute of Novel and Emerging Infectious Diseases, Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, Greifswald-Insel Riems, Germany. Electronic address:

Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) belongs to the Orthonairovirus genus in the Bunyavirales order and is genetically related to human-pathogenic Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). NSDV is a zoonotic pathogen transmitted by ticks and primarily affects naïve small ruminants in which infection leads to severe and often fatal hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Despite its veterinary importance and the striking similarities in the clinical picture between NSDV-infected ruminants and CCHFV patients, the molecular pathogenesis of NSDV and its interactions with the host cell are largely unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Genetic variants in drug targets, specifically CETP, can help predict how sex and body mass index (BMI) impact drug effects on cardiovascular health.
  • In a study with UK Biobank participants, it was found that women and those with lower BMI had more favorable lipid profiles linked to genetically lower CETP levels.
  • While sex affected some lipid-related outcomes, it didn't influence cardiovascular outcomes, suggesting the need for personalized medicine approaches based on genetic factors.

Molecular interactions of PCSK9 with an inhibitory nanobody, CAP1 and HLA-C: Functional regulation of LDLR levels.

Mol Metab

January 2023

Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM), affiliated to the University of Montreal, Laboratory of Biochemical Neuroendocrinology, Montreal, Quebec H2W 1R7, Canada. Electronic address:

Objective: The liver-derived circulating PCSK9 enhances the degradation of the LDL receptor (LDLR) in endosomes/lysosomes. PCSK9 inhibition or silencing is presently used in clinics worldwide to reduce LDL-cholesterol, resulting in lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and possibly cancer/metastasis. The mechanism by which the PCSK9-LDLR complex is sorted to degradation compartments is not fully understood.

Amyloidosis concomitant to aortic stenosis usually occurs with myocardial infiltration by the transthyretin protein. To our knowledge, this is the first report of localized amyloidosis of indeterminate type in a severely calcified and functionally unicuspid aortic valve. Isolated dystrophic valvular amyloidosis is believed to be related to fibrocalcific valve disease.

In Alzheimer's disease, Tau, a microtubule-associated protein, becomes hyperphosphorylated, detaches from microtubules, and accumulates in the somato-dendritic compartment where it forms insoluble aggregates. Tau also accumulates in the CSF of patients indicating that it is released by neurons. Consistent with this, several laboratories including ours have shown that Tau is secreted by neurons through unconventional secretory pathways.
