Background: Driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs contributes significantly to road traffic crashes worldwide. This study explored trends of alcohol, methylamphetamine (MA), 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine (MDMA) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in road crashes from 2010 to 2019 in Victoria, Australia.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and Victoria Police, examining proscribed drug detections in road crashes.

Objective: This paper, using video-reflexive ethnography (VRE) as a case study, explores the prospects for and possibilities of observational research in workplace learning.
Methods: Focusing on VRE methodology and drawing on its principles of care, collaboration, exnovation (paying attention to existing strengths) and reflexivity, we elaborate the prospects for and scope of possibilities for observational research.
Results: VRE's flexibility and participatory nature enable researchers and participants to understand the complexities of learning in situ and the dynamic interactions between learning and work practice.

Over the past few decades, the emergence of resistance amongst intestinal parasites of horses to all available anthelmintic classes has emphasised the need for a paradigm shift in parasite control approaches within the Australian equine industry. Findings of a recent Australia-wide research project have provided new insights into intestinal parasites (i.e.

Associations between mental health, diet, and risk of Alzheimer's disease highlight the need to investigate whether dietary patterns moderate the relationship between symptoms of depression and anxiety, and neurodegeneration-related blood-based biomarkers. Cognitively unimpaired participants (n = 89) were included from the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle study (mean age 75.37; 44 % male).

Objective: Selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) has been investigated as a strategy to reduce the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and other healthcare-associated infections in intensive care unit (ICU) patients receiving mechanical ventilation. There is some evidence to suggest that the use of SDD is associated with a reduction in healthcare-associated infection and mortality; however, the uptake of SDD in ICUs in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) remains low. To better understand the potential reasons, we designed a questionnaire to gather views from specialists in intensive care medicine, infectious diseases, and medical microbiology.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of hypertension and blood pressure (BP) phenotypes using 24-hour ambulatory BP (24hr-ABP) in women with past pregnancy complications who were recruited into a Women's Heart Clinic (WHC).
Study Design: We recruited 156 women aged 30-55 years with past hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and/or gestational diabetes (GDM) to a multidisciplinary six-month WHC that provided cardiovascular risk management in Melbourne, Australia. Women were referred for 24 hr-ABP monitoring if clinic BP was ≥130/80 mmHg.

Background: School closures have been a prominent component of the global Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) response. However, their effect on viral transmission, COVID-19 mortality and health care system pressure remains incompletely understood, as traditional observational studies fall short in assessing such population-level impacts.
Methods And Findings: We used a mathematical model to simulate the COVID-19 epidemics of 74 countries, incorporating observed data from 2020 to 2022 and historical school closure timelines.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 10-13% of women globally. It is a condition with metabolic, reproductive and psychological features, with health impacts across the lifespan. The aetiology of PCOS is complex, with an interplay of several factors including genetic and epigenetic susceptibility, androgen exposure in early life and adiposity related dysfunction leading to hypothalamic-ovarian disturbance.

Injecting CO into deep geological formations can be an effective carbon removal and storage technology to mitigate global climate change. Interaction of injected CO with rock formations changes pH and hydrochemistry within the deep injection zone (> 800 m depth). However, cap rocks and multiple tight aquitards typically act as barriers to protect the shallow aquifer from changes in the injection zone.

Despite advances in solid phase peptide synthesis and peptide ligation, challenges remain in the assembly of polypeptides through coupling of peptide fragments. Herein we describe a new method for peptide fragment coupling employing the Ag(I)-promoted transformation of peptide thioamides. This process proceeds an isoimide-tethered intermediate, which undergoes an O-N acyl transfer to generate the polypeptide.

In the proposed paper, a new result is presented, which is as follows: the point on the equilibrium excess adsorption isotherm at which the rate of increase of concentration of a component in the adsorption phase reaches its mean value is the point at which the curvature of the isotherm takes its extreme value. This regularity also holds in the case of the adsorption of gases. This result is confirmed and valid for isotherms of various types.
