Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed early postoperative complications of single-stage primary cleft lip and palate (PCLP) repair compared to primary cleft lip (PCL) and primary cleft palate (PCP) repairs.
  • Using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric database, researchers compared 181 PCLP patients with 1007 PCP and 783 PCL patients, finding no significant difference in early complications among the groups.
  • Key risk factors for longer operative times in the PCLP group were identified, including cardiac conditions and previous complications, suggesting that while single-stage repairs are safe, further research into long-term outcomes remains necessary.

Bile acids alter regulatory pathways in several cell types. The molecular basis for these actions is not fully elucidated, but lithocholyltaurine interacts functionally with muscarinic receptors on gastric chief cells. In the present report, we demonstrate selective interaction of bile acids with Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells expressing each of the five muscarinic receptors.

Cold agglutinins (CAs) are autoantibodies that react reversibly with red blood cells (RBCs) at temperatures of, or below, the thermal amplitude for agglutination. This results in increased blood viscosity and sludging of RBC, and may impair perfusion to various organ systems. Although this phenomenon appears rarely in the clinical arena, the incidence of CA is increased substantially in cardiac surgery due to the routine use of hypothermia for organ preservation and systemic metabolic reduction.
