MOF biochar composites for environmental protection and pollution control.

Research studies on Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF) based composites and their potential applications in environmental engineering and pollution control have recently emerged. An attractive material to form MOF composites is biochar (BC); a low-cost, highly porous carbonaceous by-product of biomass pyrolysis. This paper presents a critical review on MOF-biochar composites, focusing on fabrication, characterisation, modification, and applications in environmental protection and pollution control.

Experiences and Views of Older Adults of South Asian, Black African, and Caribbean Backgrounds About the Digitalization of Primary Care Services Since the COVID-19 Pandemic: Qualitative Focus Group Study.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022 prompted governments worldwide to enforce lockdowns and social restrictions, alongside the rapid adoption of digital health and care services. However, there are concerns about the potential exclusion of older adults, who face barriers to digital inclusion, such as age, socioeconomic status, literacy level, and ethnicity.

Objective: This study aims to explore the experiences of older adults from the 3 largest minoritized ethnic groups in England and Wales-people of South Asian, Black African, and Caribbean backgrounds-in the use of digitalized primary care services since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Systemic sclerosis-related fecal incontinence: a scoping review focusing on a neglected manifestation.

Objectives: This scoping-review sought to summarize the current knowledge on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and the investigations that may help characterize faecal incontinence (FI) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).

Methods: The planned scoping review was based on the methodological framework proposed by Arksey & O'Malley.Two databases were screened: PubMed (Medline), (webofSciences), data extraction was performed using a predefined template.

Integration of personalised ultrasensitive ctDNA monitoring of patients with metastatic breast cancer to reduce imaging requirements.

Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) is an emerging biomarker for monitoring cancers. The personalised disease monitoring in metastatic breast cancer (PDM-MBC) study is an ongoing study instigated to evaluate ctDNA as a biomarker to individualise imaging requirements in patients with MBC. Patients receiving first-line endocrine therapy (aromatase inhibitor + cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor) had plasma samples collected pre-treatment, weeks 2 and 4, and concurrently with imaging until progressive disease (PD).

Given the ageing population and lack of therapeutic advances in CAP, new strategies to manage the burden of this disease are needed. Neutrophil dysfunction has been widely demonstrated in CAP and is associated with poor outcomes.

Highly selective and reusable nanoadsorbent based on FeO-embedded sodium alginate-based hydrogel for cationic dye adsorption: Adsorption interpretation using multiscale modeling.

This study aims to develop a stable and efficient magnetic nanocomposite hydrogel (MNCH) for selective removal of methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV). MNCHs with different FeO contents (0-9 wt%) were synthesized following graft co-polymerization method using sodium alginate, acrylamide, itaconic acid, ammonium persulfate and N,N-methylene bisacrylamide. Among them, MNCH, with 5 wt% FeO, showed highest removal efficiency (>95 %).

A qualitative study exploring the digital therapeutic alliance with fully automated smartphone apps.

Background: Digital mental health interventions are increasingly used to scale up access to mental health support, yet very few mental health apps are empirically supported, with high attrition rates. The therapeutic alliance between therapists and clients is a key factor in predicting psychological therapy retention and outcomes. Understanding how this concept translates to the digital context, the so-called digital therapeutic alliance (DTA), may help enhance retention and outcomes in digital mental health.

The association between delirium and falls in older adults in the community: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: Systematically review and critically appraise the evidence for the association between delirium and falls in community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years.

Methods: We searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, CINAHL and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews databases in April 2023. Standard methods were used to screen, extract data, assess risk of bias (using Newcastle-Ottawa scale), provide a narrative synthesis and, where appropriate, conduct meta-analysis.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Phosphino-Aryloxide Rare Earth Complexes.

A series of homoleptic rare earth (RE) complexes bearing phosphino-aryloxide ligands (, ) has been prepared. The complexes have been characterised using multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis. Structural characterisation highlighted the different RE-P interactions as a result of differing Lewis acidity and ionic size across the series, hinting at the possibility of FLP-type activity.

Elevated mutation rates in multi-azole resistant Aspergillus fumigatus drive rapid evolution of antifungal resistance.

The environmental use of azole fungicides has led to selective sweeps across multiple loci in the Aspergillus fumigatus genome causing the rapid global expansion of a genetically distinct cluster of resistant genotypes. Isolates within this cluster are also more likely to be resistant to agricultural antifungals with unrelated modes of action. Here we show that this cluster is not only multi-azole resistant but has increased propensity to develop resistance to next generation antifungals because of variants in the DNA mismatch repair system.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogenous lung condition characterized by progressive airflow obstruction. Despite advancements in diagnosis and treatment, the disease burden remains high; although clinical trials have shown improvements in outcomes such as exacerbations, quality of life, and lung function, improvement may not be attainable for many patients. For patients who do experience improvement, it is challenging to set management goals given the progressive nature of COPD.

Using Video Cameras to Assess Physical Activity and Other Well-Being Behaviors in Urban Environments: Feasibility, Reliability, and Participant Reactivity Studies.

Background: Unobtrusive observation is a promising method for assessing physical activity and other well-being behaviors (eg, social interactions) in urban environments, without participant burden and biases associated with self-report. However, current methods require multiple in-person observers. Using video cameras instead could allow for more accurate observations at lower cost and with greater flexibility in scheduling.

Meta-analyses uncover the genetic architecture of Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies.

Objective: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (myositis, IIMs) are rare, systemic autoimmune disorders that lead to muscle inflammation, weakness, and extra-muscular manifestations, with a strong genetic component influencing disease development and progression. Previous genome-wide association studies identified loci associated with IIMs. In this study, we imputed data from two prior genome-wide myositis studies and analyzed the largest myositis dataset to date to identify novel risk loci and susceptibility genes associated with IIMs and its clinical subtypes.

As the temperature decreases, rigid anisotropic molecules that usually incorporate polar groups, aromatic rings or multiple bonds, orient along a common direction, eventually forming liquid-crystalline phases under specific thermodynamic conditions. This study explores the phase behavior and dynamics of board-shaped mesogens with a 1,4,5,8-tetraphenyl-anthraquinone core and four lateral arms forming an oligo(phenyleneethynylene) scaffold. These molecules are promising candidates for forming the elusive biaxial nematic phase.

Taking advantage of these properties, the present study investigates the development by 3D printing of bacterial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) scaffolds loaded with β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) for bone tissue regeneration. PHBV blending with poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) (30 wt%) was exploited to enhance material processability via an optimized computer-aided wet-spinning approach.

A comparison of real-world data on adjuvant treatment in patients with stage III BRAF V600 mutated melanoma - Results of systematic literature research.

Background: Over the past decade, PD-1-based immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) and targeted therapies (TT) with BRAF and MEK inhibitors transformed melanoma treatment. Both are widely used in the adjuvant setting. However, for patients with a BRAF V600 mutation, the optimal adjuvant therapy remains unclear due to the lack of head-to-head comparison studies.
