The socio-colonial history of Surinamese surnames applied to a validated surname list to identify ancestry in health research.

Around half of the population of Suriname, who are mainly of African and South Asian descent, migrated to the Netherlands at the end of the previous century, where they face higher perinatal and maternal mortality and up to 5 years lower life expectancy than European-Dutch. Analyses by ancestry are needed to address these inequalities, but the law prohibits registration by ancestry. Therefore, a list of Surinamese surnames was compiled and validated to identify the largest groups, African-Surinamese or South Asian-Surinamese ancestry in health research.

Resizable ventricular patch plasty in the porcine left ventricle: a pilot study.

Objective: : Endoventricular circular patch plasty is a method used to reconstruct the ventricular cavity in patients with (post) ischemic left ventricular aneurysm or global dilatation. However, late redilatation with mitral regurgitation has been reported, in which postoperative apex shape seems to play an important role. We studied the feasibility of ventricular volume downsizing with a variably shaped patch in porcine hearts.

Reliability of fine-needle aspiration in patients with familial nonmedullary thyroid cancer.

In this case-control study we describe how often thyroid cancers and occult cancers are diagnosed or not diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in patients with thyroid nodules and a family history of nonmedullary thyroid cancers (FNMTC). Our hypothesis is that patients with thyroid nodules and a family history of FNMTC seem to be similar to patients with thyroid nodules and a history of exposure to low-dose therapeutic radiation. Both have been reported to have multifocal thyroid neoplasms and malignant tumors are common.

Photodynamic therapy: a promising new modality for the treatment of cancer.

The first reports on photodynamic therapy (PDT) date back to the 1970s. Since then, several thousands of patients, both with early stage and advanced stage solid tumours, have been treated with PDT and many claims have been made regarding its efficacy. Nevertheless, the therapy has not yet found general acceptance by oncologists.

ON ALIMENTARY LEUCOCYTOSIS IN ITS RELATION TO THE "CRISE HEMOCLASIQUE" OF WIDAL.

Counts of the number of white blood cells at short intervals after the ingestion of a meal (meat, eggs, milk, rice, or butter) in normal individuals and in a number of asthmatics reveal the following facts. As a rule, a sharp fall in the leucocytic curve occurs within 1 or 2 minutes after the meal; generally the curve rises within 10 to 20 minutes, but often a second fall follows 30 to 50 minutes after the meal. This may be followed by a slow rise in the curve (physiological leucocytosis).
