Apneas, hypopneas, and respiratory effort-related arousals: moving closer to a standard.

Curr Opin Pulm Med

The spectrum of sleep disordered breathing ranges from intermittent snoring to the obesity hypoventilation syndrome with the obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome fitting somewhere in between. Recently, improved definitions and monitoring techniques are allowing for clearer differentiation of the syndromes within this spectrum. These new standards have also produced better understanding of the prognosis and treatment options for patients fitting into different points within this spectrum.

In order to study age-related differences in striatal electrophysiological activity in freely-moving animals, multi-wire electrode arrays were chronically implanted in the striatum of young (6-8 months) and aged (24-26 months) Fischer 344 rats. After recording baseline activity, d-amphetamine (D-AMPH; 1.0 mg/kg) and apomorphine (APO; 0.

Clozapine-like motor effects of the atypical antipsychotic risperidone in rats.

Neurosci Lett

May 2000

Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology, The University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, 111 Davis Mills Building, 800 Rose Street, Lexington, KY 40536-0098, USA.

A behavioral preparation that affords concurrent measurement of forelimb force, lick rhythm, and forelimb tremor in rats was used to assess the effects of the atypical antipsychotic risperidone. Rats that were trained to press downward on an isometric force transducer while simultaneously licking water reinforcement were administered risperidone (0.08, 0.

Auricular endochondral pseudocysts: diagnosis and management.

Plast Reconstr Surg

April 1999

College of Medicine, Department of Surgery, at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, Lexington 40536-0084, USA.

The auricle can be the site of a variety of cystic lesions, many of which involve either potential spaces between the auricular cartilage and the perichondrium or spaces within the skin and subcutaneous tissues. An auricular endochondral pseudocyst is a fluid collection located within the cartilaginous structure of the auricle. The auricular hematoma and the auricular pseudocyst may represent opposing ends of a continuum of damage and repair of traumatic insults.

Excitatory amino acids may promote microtubular proteolysis observed in ischemic neuronal degeneration by calcium-mediated activation of calpain, a neutral protease. We tested this hypothesis in an animal model of focal cerebral ischemia without reperfusion. Spontaneously hypertensive rats were treated with 2, 3-dihydroxy-6-nitro-7-sulfamoyl-benzo-(F)quinoxaline (NBQX), a competitive antagonist of the neuronal receptor for alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA), or cis-4-[phosphono-methyl]-2-piperidine carboxylic acid (CGS 19755), a competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor.
