Ground triplet 4,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-phenylene bis(-butyl nitroxide) (TF2PBN) reacted with [Y(hfac)(HO)] (hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dionate), affording a doubly hydrogen-bonded adduct [Y(hfac)(HO)(TF2PBN)]. The biradical was recovered from the adduct through recrystallization. Crystallographic analysis indicates that the torsion angles (|| ≤ 90°) between the benzene ring and nitroxide groups were 74.

Acute cardiovascular physical exercise improves cognitive performance, as evidenced by a reduction in reaction time (RT). However, the mechanistic understanding of how this occurs is elusive and has not been rigorously investigated in humans. Here, using positron emission tomography (PET) with [ C]raclopride, in a multi-experiment study we investigated whether acute exercise releases endogenous dopamine (DA) in the brain.

During aversive olfactory conditioning, aversive shock information needs to be transmitted to the mushroom bodies (MBs) to associate with odor information. We report that aversive information is transmitted by ensheathing glia (EG) that surround the MBs. Shock induces vesicular exocytosis of glutamate from EG.

Robot locomotion by fluid-fluid interaction.

Sci Rep

December 2023

Department of Mechanical and Intelligent Systems Engineering, The University of Electro-Communications, 1-5-1 Chofugaoka, Chofu, 182-8585, Tokyo, Japan.

This paper describes a locomotion strategy for robots based on the interaction between two fluids, through the development of an untethered mobile robot. The fundamental principle of robot locomotion is to exploit the active deformations of ferrofluid caused by internal magnetic fields, which generate reaction forces to the surrounding fluid (in this study, water). The developed robot is equipped with two permanent magnets (PMs), two electromagnets (EMs), two clusters of ferrofluid, and a control unit with batteries.

Wigner-Araki-Yanase Theorem for Continuous and Unbounded Conserved Observables.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2023

Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering, The University of Electro-Communications, 1-5-1 Chofugaoka, Chofu, Tokyo 182-8585, Japan.

The Wigner-Araki-Yanase (WAY) theorem states that additive conservation laws imply the commutativity of exactly implementable projective measurements and the conserved observables of the system. Known proofs of this theorem are only restricted to bounded or discrete-spectrum conserved observables of the system and are not applicable to unbounded and continuous observables like a momentum operator. In this Letter, we present the WAY theorem for possibly unbounded and continuous conserved observables under the Yanase condition, which requires that the probe positive operator-valued measure should commute with the conserved observable of the probe system.

Background: Hearing loss caused by middle ear malformations is treated by tympanoplasty to reconstruct the acoustic conduction system. The mobility of the ossicles plays a crucial role in postoperative success. However, identifying the location of ossicular malformation based solely on preoperative audiograms is challenging due to the complex relationship between fixation location, deformity levels, and ossicular mobility.

Bacteriorhodopsin, isolated from a halophilic bacterium, is a photosynthetic protein with a structure and function similar to those of the visual pigment rhodopsin. A voltaic cell with bacteriorhodopsin sandwiched between two transparent electrodes exhibits a time-differential response akin to that observed in retinal ganglion cells. It is intriguing as a means to emulate excitation and inhibition in the neural response.

Department of Engineering Science, The University of Electro-Communications, 1-5-1 Chofugaoka, Chofu, Tokyo, 182-8585, Japan.

Bright afterglow room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) soon after ceasing excitation is a promising technique for greatly increasing anti-counterfeiting capabilities. The development of a process for rapid high-resolution afterglow patterning of crystalline materials can improve both high-speed fabrication of anti-counterfeiting afterglow media and stable afterglow readout compared with those achieved with amorphous materials. Here, the high-resolution afterglow patterning of crystalline materials via cooperative organic vapo- and photo-stimulation is reported.

Introduction: Both sleep deprivation and hypoxia have been shown to impair executive function. Conversely, moderate intensity exercise is known to improve executive function. In a multi-experiment study, we tested the hypotheses that moderate intensity exercise would ameliorate any decline in executive function after i) three consecutive nights of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) (Experiment 1) and ii) the isolated and combined effects of a single night of total sleep deprivation (TSD) and acute hypoxia (Experiment 2).

Article Synopsis
  • Hypoxia, which is lower oxygen levels, can negatively affect cognitive functions, particularly impacting memory while leaving attention tasks relatively untouched.
  • In a study with 12 male participants, cognitive performance was tested after varying periods of hypoxic exposure, revealing decreased oxygen delivery to brain regions involved in memory tasks.
  • The results indicate that cognitive performance varies across domains, with memory showing significant impairment due to hypoxia, while tasks related to selective attention and response inhibition remain resilient.

Afterglow room-temperature emission that is independent of autofluorescence after ceasing excitation is a promising technology for state-of-the-art bioimaging and security devices. However, the low brightness of the afterglow emission is a current limitation for using such materials in a variety of applications. Herein, the continuous formation of condensed triplet excitons for brighter afterglow room-temperature phosphorescence is reported.

We introduce the problem of variable-length (VL) source resolvability, in which a given target probability distribution is approximated by encoding a VL uniform random number, and the asymptotically minimum average length rate of the uniform random number, called the VL resolvability, is investigated. We first analyze the VL resolvability with the variational distance as an approximation measure. Next, we investigate the case under the divergence as an approximation measure.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the Se-treated GaAs(001)-([Formula: see text]) surface. The ([Formula: see text]) structure with the two-fold coordinated Se atom at the outermost layer and the three-fold coordinated Se atom at the third layer was found to be energetically stable and agrees well with the experimental data from scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This atomic geometry accounts for the improved stability of the Se-treated surface against the oxidation.

Embodied simulation with a digital brain model and a realistic musculoskeletal body model provides a means to understand animal behavior and behavioral change. Such simulation can be too large and complex to conduct on a single computer, and so distributed simulation across multiple computers over the Internet is necessary. In this study, we report our joint effort on developing a spiking brain model and a mouse body model, connecting over the Internet, and conducting bidirectional simulation while synchronizing them.
