Background: Although the use of vasopressors to maintain haemodynamic goals after acute spinal cord injury (SCI) is still recommended, evidence regarding the target values and possible risks of this practice is limited, and data on haemodynamic parameters unaffected by catecholamines are rare. In this pilot study, we show the haemodynamic profile of patients with acute SCI mainly unaffected by vasopressor use and other factors that influence the cardiovascular system.
Methods: From March 2018 to March 2020, we conducted a prospective, single-centre pilot study of 30 patients with acute SCI.

Introduction: Language disorders - disorganized and incoherent speech in particular - are distinctive features of schizophrenia. Natural language processing (NLP) offers automated measures of incoherent speech as promising markers for schizophrenia. However, the scientific and clinical impact of NLP markers depends on their generalizability across contexts, samples, and languages, which we systematically assessed in the present study relying on a large, novel, cross-linguistic corpus.

The safety of thyroid surgery in terms of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and hypoparathyroidism has increased over the last decade. In this study, we present a new method of tension-free thyroidectomy (TFT), which could be used to further decrease the complication rate after a thyroidectomy. The procedure is based on the medial approach to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the parathyroid glands after the division of the isthmus and successive complete dissection of Berry's ligament.

Background: Internet-based self-help-programs like deprexis have been increasingly shown to reduce depressive symptoms if added to distinct, primarily outpatient-treatment-settings. There is limited information about the effectiveness of deprexis if started at routine psychiatric hospital inpatient treatment of moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder (MDD).
Subjects And Methods: To examine, sixty-nine adult MDD-inpatients were randomly assigned to a 12-week-period of treatment-as-usual (TAU, N=33) or TAU plus guided deprexis (TAU-PLUS, N=36).

To shed more light on the addictive power of the gabapentinoids (GPTs) gabapentin and pregabalin, we performed a structured face-to-face interview with GPT-users about DSM-IV-dependence-criteria (sedatives), consume-motives and cessation-needs. Among 100 patients consecutively admitted to a detoxification-ward, fifteen (15%) reported lifetime GPT-use (18-50 years old, 2 females): seven (7%) used gabapentin, twelve (12%) pregabalin and four had lifetime experiences with both GPTs. Of the seven gabapentin-users, three patients were dependent including one person with a spontaneous remission.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motor neuron disease in humans and remains to have a fatal prognosis. Recent studies in animal models and human ALS patients indicate that increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in the pathogenesis. Considering previous studies revealing the influence of ROS on mitochondrial physiology, our attention was focused on mitochondria in the murine ALS model, wobbler mouse.

Objective: Gabapentinoids (GPT) are reported to be increasingly misused by opioid- and polydrug-users, but the addictive potential of GPT outside of these populations remains understudied. Investigations comparing GPT abuse and dependence liability to that of other commonly prescribed Central Nervous System-acting medications are therefore warranted. We provide a comparison of GPT-abuse/dependence to that of other GABAmimetics within an elderly population.

Introduction: Several psychiatric and somatic medications are assumed to improve COVID-19-symptoms. These include antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants as well as anticoagulants, statins, and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system (RAAS)-inhibitors for somatic comorbid conditions. All these agents may reduce the hyperinflammatory response to SARS/CoV-2 or the related negative cardio-cerebrovascular outcomes.

Synapses "govern" the computational properties of any given network in the brain. However, their detailed quantitative morphology is still rather unknown, particularly in humans. Quantitative 3D-models of synaptic boutons (SBs) in layer (L)6a and L6b of the temporal lobe neocortex (TLN) were generated from biopsy samples after epilepsy surgery using fine-scale transmission electron microscopy, 3D-volume reconstructions and electron microscopic tomography.

Present in more than one billion adults, hypertension is the most significant modifiable risk factor for mortality resulting from cardiovascular disease. Although its pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, the disruption of the renin‑angiotensin system (RAS), consisting of the systemic and brain RAS, has been recognized as one of the primary reasons for several types of hypertension. Therefore, acquiring sound knowledge of the basic science of RAS and the underlying mechanisms of the signaling pathways associated with RAS may facilitate the discovery of novel therapeutic targets with which to promote the management of patients with cardiovascular and kidney disease.
