The surgical learning curve is an observable and measurable phenomenon. In the era of competency-based approaches to surgical training, monitoring the trajectory of individual trainee competence attainment could represent a meaningful method of formative and summative assessment. While technology can assist this approach, a number of significant barriers to the implementation of such assessment methods remain, including: accurate data collection, standard setting, and reliable assessment.

MicroRNAs are key posttranscriptional regulators of protein levels in cells. The brain is particularly enriched in microRNAs, and important roles have been demonstrated for these noncoding RNAs in various neurological disorders. To this end, visualization of microRNAs in specific cell types and subcellular compartments within tissue sections provides researchers with essential insights that support understanding of the cell and molecular mechanisms of microRNAs in brain diseases.

MicroRNAs are small molecules of non-coding RNAs involved in the regulation of mRNA expression, generally through inhibition of translation. Major efforts have been made to understand their role in health and disease, and more recently, microRNAs have been extensively studied as potential disease biomarkers. While the profiling and analysis of microRNAs from large quantities of biofluids are well established, difficulties still remain in the use of small volume of samples for this purpose.

Brain development occurs until adulthood, with time-sensitive processes happening during embryo development, childhood, and puberty. During early life and childhood, dynamic changes in the brain are critical for physiological brain maturation, and these changes are tightly regulated by the expression of specific regulatory genetic elements. Early life insults, such as hypoxia, can alter the course of brain maturation, resulting in lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions.

Inducible promoters are indispensable elements when considering the possibility to modulate gene expression on demand. Desirable traits of conditional expression systems include their capacity for tight downregulation, high overexpression, and in some instances for fine-tuning, to achieve a desired product's stoichiometry. Although the number of inducible systems is slowly increasing, suitable promoters comprising these features are rare.

In this review glycosidase activated prodrugs that target cancer cells are discussed. Glycosylated prodrugs undergo enzymatic bioconversion, cleaving the prodrug to release the anticancer drug at the desired site of action, hence minimising the toxic side effects associated with many current anticancer drugs. In addition, the presence of the carbohydrate moiety increases the aqueous solubility of the drugs, allowing for a more effective treatment.

Cationic porphyrins based on the 5,10,15,20--(tetrakis-4--methylpyridyl) core (TMPyP4) have been studied extensively over many years due to their strong interactions with a variety of nucleic acid structures, and their potential use as photodynamic therapeutic agents and telomerase inhibitors. In this paper, the interactions of metal-free TMPyP4 and Pt(II)TMPyP4 with guanine-containing nucleic acids are studied for the first time using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy (TRIR). In DO solution (where the metal-free form exists as DTMPyP4) both compounds yielded similar TRIR spectra (between 1450-1750 cm) following pulsed laser excitation in their Soret B-absorption bands.

Coordinating the spatial arrangement of electroactive partners is crucial to designable molecular electronics and photonics. Porphyrins are ubiquitous reaction centers in nature; synthetic porphyrins, in the crystallographic solid state, are often coerced into monolithic stacks, inhibiting reactivity. Using the principles of self-organization, and by exploiting charge-balance principles, we can manipulate nonplanar porphyrins into one- and two-dimensional hydrogen-bonded polymers, with polyoxometalate (POM) and bifunctional counter-anions serving as linkers.

BackgroundHeterologous effects of vaccines are mediated by "trained immunity," whereby myeloid cells are metabolically and epigenetically reprogrammed, resulting in heightened responses to subsequent insults. Adenovirus vaccine vector has been reported to induce trained immunity in mice. Therefore, we sought to determine whether the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (AZD1222), which uses an adenoviral vector, could induce trained immunity in vivo in humans.

Clinical decision-making (CDM) plays an integral role in the work of a physical therapist and has ramifications for patient outcomes and experience. Rational decision-making - acting in a manner that helps us achieve our goals - is influenced by cognitive, emotional, and social variables. The dual process theory helps us understand how clinicians make what they perceive to be rational decisions.
