The synthesis of two new polymers made from P(E-alt-MA) (poly(ethylene--maleic anhydride) and possessing 2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (btp) ligand side chains in 3 and 6 mol%, respectively (P1 and P2, respectively) is described. These polymers were shown to be soluble in MeOH solution and, in the case of P1, also in water, while P2 needed prolonged heating to enable water dissolution. Btp ligands are known for coordinating both d- and f-metal ions and so, herein, we demonstrate by using both UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence emission, as well as time-gated phosphorescence spectroscopies, that both P1 and P2 can bind to Tb(III) ions to give rise to luminescent polymers.

Older people experience greater morbidity with a corresponding increase in medication use resulting in a potentially higher risk of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The aim of this study was to; 1) determine the prevalence and characteristics of ADR-related hospital admissions among older patients (≥65 years) in Ireland; and 2) identify the risk factors associated with ADR-related hospital admissions. This computational work studies the different hydrogen bond (HB) binding modes that can be established between neighbouring HB donors and acceptors in structures with relevance in catalysis and biology. To analyse the electronic effect on the σ-hole, unsubstituted HB donors and ones with two different substituents, an electron withdrawing (EWG), and an electron donating (EDG) group, were studied. In exploring terminal nickel-oxo complexes, postulated to be the active oxidant in natural and non-natural oxidation reactions, we report the synthesis of the pseudo-trigonal bipyramidal Ni complexes (K)[Ni (L )(DMF)] (1[DMF]) and (NMe ) [Ni (L )(OAc)] (1[OAc]) (L =2,2',2''-nitrilo-tris-(N-phenylacetamide); DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide; OAc=acetate). Both complexes were characterized using NMR, FTIR, ESI-MS, and X-ray crystallography, showing the L ligand to bind in a tetradentate fashion, together with an ancillary donor. The reaction of 1[OAc] with peroxyphenyl acetic acid (PPAA) resulted in the formation of [(L )Ni -O-H⋅⋅⋅OAc] , 2, that displays many of the characteristics of a terminal Ni=O species.

The experimental results of the complex dielectric permittivity of aliphatic ketones in dilute solutions of inert solvent cyclohexane in the gigahertz (GHz) and terahertz (THz) frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum are examined in terms of the theory of inertial anomalous diffusion of polar molecules, considered as an assembly of molecules with interacting dipolar groups, in polar liquids. The theory is based on the generalization of the Debye rotational diffusion model of dielectric relaxation of polar molecules. The model comprises two interacting dipolar groups-one lighter and the other heavier; each has a finite moment of inertia and each experiences a finite friction with an extensive range of damping or drag coefficient and the dipole moment ratio of the two groups.

Dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma jets provide viable state-of-the-art nonthermal processes for a wide range of nanomaterials including particle transport and deposition. We report the interaction of argon and helium plasma jets with the particle aerosol, produced by ns laser ablation of a silver target and subsequently their transport for deposition on a distant substrate. The nanofeatures and functionality of the nanoparticles, entrained and deposited with the two plasma jets were compared using high-resolution electron microscopy, helium ion microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and in terms of the SERS effect.

Introduction: Economic evaluation currently focuses almost exclusively on the maximization of health, using the Quality-Adjusted Life-Year (QALY) framework with instruments such as the EQ-5D, with a limited number of health-focused dimensions providing the assessment of health benefit. The presence of metal atoms at the edges of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) opens new possibilities toward tailoring their physical properties. We present here formation and high-resolution characterization of indium (In) chains on the edges of graphene-supported GNRs. The GNRs are formed when adsorbed hydrocarbon contamination crystallizes via laser heating into small ribbon-like patches of a second graphitic layer on a continuous graphene monolayer and onto which In is subsequently physical vapor deposited.

The primary phase time constant of pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics ( ) during submaximal efforts is longer in middle-aged people with type 2 diabetes (T2D), partly due to limitations in oxygen supply to active muscles. This study examined if a high-intensity "priming" exercise (PE) would speed during a subsequent high-intensity cycling exercise in T2D due to enhanced oxygen delivery. Eleven (4 women) middle-aged individuals with type 2 diabetes and 11 (4 women) non-diabetic controls completed four separate cycling bouts each starting at an 'unloaded' baseline of 10 W and transitioning to a high-intensity constant-load.
