Background: Cluain Mhuire is a secondary adult mental health service based in Ireland. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in many services moving online, including our coping with depression group. A shortened, online version of the face-to-face group was piloted; however, analysis showed that it was not as effective as the longer face-to-face group.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a rare multisystem autoimmune disease. There is a need for interoperable national registries to enable reporting of real-world long-term outcomes and their predictors in AAV. The Irish National Rare Kidney Disease (RKD) registry was founded in 2012.

Background: As youth participation in contact and overhead sports has increased in recent decades, so has the occurrence of injuries of the shoulder. Rotator cuff injury (RCI) is an infrequent shoulder pathology in pediatric patients and its description in the literature has been scarce. A greater understanding of RCI characteristics and treatment outcomes in children and adolescents would improve our understanding of this pathology and help to better guide clinical decision-making.

We assessed the neurocognitive correlates of auditory executive attention in low socioeconomic status 9-12-year-old children-with and without training in a social music program (OrKidstra). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during an auditory Go/NoGo task utilizing 1100 Hz and 2000 Hz pure tones. We examined Go trials, which required attention, tone discrimination and executive response control.

Supramolecular Chirogenesis in a Sterically Hindered Porphyrin: A Critical Theoretical Analysis.

Chemistry

September 2023

School of Chemistry, Chair of Organic Chemistry, Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin, 152-160 Pearse Street, D02R590, Dublin, Ireland.

The determination of molecular stereochemistry and absolute configuration is an important part of modern chemistry, pharmacology, and biology. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy is a widely used tool for chirality assignment, especially with porphyrin macrocycles employed as reporter chromophores. However, the mechanisms of induced ECD in porphyrin complexes are yet to be comprehensively rationalized.

Antiferromagnets are promising materials for future opto-spintronic applications since they show spin dynamics in the THz range and no net magnetization. Recently, layered van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnets have been reported, which combine low-dimensional excitonic properties with complex spin-structure. While various methods for the fabrication of vdW 2D crystals exist, formation of large area and continuous thin films is challenging because of either limited scalability, synthetic complexity, or low opto-spintronic quality of the final material.

Mechanical fatigue in trees mitigated by annual growth: A theoretical model.

J Theor Biol

July 2023

Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Department of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Biomedical Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, Ireland. Electronic address:

Mechanical forces applied over a period of time tend to cause fatigue failure in natural organisms and in engineering structures. Here, the theoretical approach known as Continuum Damage Mechanics is applied to study fatigue damage development in trees. It is found that growth in the form of an annual ring of new material is a very effective strategy to limit fatigue damage, due to the fact that, over time, each ring moves inside the trunk, reducing stress.

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are thermonuclear explosions of degenerate white dwarf stars destabilized by mass accretion from a companion star, but the nature of their progenitors remains poorly understood. A way to discriminate between progenitor systems is through radio observations; a non-degenerate companion star is expected to lose material through winds or binary interaction before explosion, and the supernova ejecta crashing into this nearby circumstellar material should result in radio synchrotron emission. However, despite extensive efforts, no type Ia supernova (SN Ia) has ever been detected at radio wavelengths, which suggests a clean environment and a companion star that is itself a degenerate white dwarf star.

Anorexia is experienced by most people with lung cancer during the course of their disease and treatment. Anorexia reduces response to chemotherapy and the ability of patients to cope with, and complete their treatment leading to greater morbidity, poorer prognosis and outcomes. Despite the significant importance of cancer-related anorexia, current therapies are limited, have marginal benefits and unwarranted side effects.

We employ U-Pb calcite dating of structurally-controlled fracture fills within crystalline Caledonian basement in western Norway to reveal subtle large-scale tectonic events that affected this rifted continental margin. The ages (15 in total) fall into four distinct groups with ages mainly ranging from latest Cretaceous to Pleistocene. (1) The three oldest (Triassic-Jurassic) ages refine the complex faulting history of a reactivated fault strand originated from the Caledonian collapse and broadly correlate with known rifting events offshore.

A Hybrid Indoor Altimetry Based on Barometer and UWB.

Sensors (Basel)

April 2023

School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin, D02 PN40 Dublin, Ireland.

Accurate altimetry is essential for location-based services in commercial and industrial applications. However, current altimetry methods only provide low-accuracy measurements, particularly in multistorey buildings with irregular structures, such as hollow areas found in various industrial and commercial sites. This paper innovatively proposes a tightly coupled indoor altimetry system that utilizes floor identification to improve height measurement accuracy.

July 2023

Interventional Psychiatry Program and Centre for Depression & Suicide Studies, St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute & Krembil Research Institute, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Despite considerable efforts to study the relationship between insomnia and depression, there is minimal research investigating whether insomnia symptoms change over time during a course of antidepressant pharmacotherapy. This study investigated the course of insomnia symptoms during the acute treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) using a secondary analysis of data from MDD patients (N = 180) who were treated with open-label escitalopram (10-20 mg/day) for 8-weeks. Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale without sleep item (modified-MADRS) assessed depression and Self-reported Quick Inventory Depressive Scale (QIDS-SR) measured subjective sleep-onset, mid-nocturnal, and early-morning insomnia throughout 8-weeks of treatment.

Expanding health technology assessment towards broader value: Ireland as a case study.

Int J Technol Assess Health Care

May 2023

Centre for Health Policy and Management, Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.

Healthcare innovations often represent important improvements in population welfare, but at what cost, and to whom? Health technology assessment (HTA) is a multidisciplinary process to inform resource allocation. HTA is conventionally anchored on health maximization as the only relevant output of health services. If we accept the proposition that health technologies can generate value outside the healthcare system, resource allocation decisions could be suboptimal from a societal perspective.

Purpose: Definitional perspectives and operational approaches to the concept of resilience vary within the literature; however, little is known of women's opinions on current resilience research, or the philosophical and methodological directions women believe such research should take. This research explored women's perspectives on resilience research in the perinatal period and early motherhood and sought their opinions on the ways in which they believe research should be advanced.

Methods: Following ethical approval, online interviews were conducted with 14 ethnically and socioeconomically diverse women who were mothers.

COVID-19 has highlighted the vulnerability of intensive care unit (ICU) patients and the negative sequelae associated with ICU treatment. While the potentially traumatic impact of ICU is well documented, less is known about the ICU survivor's subjective experience and how it influences life post-discharge. Existential psychology addresses the universal concerns of existence, including death, isolation, and meaninglessness, and offers a holistic view of human experience beyond diagnostic categories.
