Domestic violence detection amid the COVID-19 pandemic: the value of the WHO questionnaire in emergency medicine.

QJM

November 2021

Department of Emergency Medicine. Ospedale San Marco-Policlinico Gaspare Rodolico. School of Medicine, The University of Catania, Via Santa Sofia 78, Catania 95100, Italy.

Background: Gender-based violence affects 35-45% of women worldwide, mostly coming from domestic violence. A good screening procedure in clinical practice is useful, but WHO does not advise universal screening, recommending further research.

Aim: (i) To report the frequency of domestic violence cases among admissions to the Emergency Room of a major Italian Hospital in 2020, including during complete 'Lockdown' period; (ii) to document acute and chronic health effects of domestic violence and (iii) to asses usefulness of the WHO screening as a tool for uncovering cases which would otherwise remain hidden.

Brain and other nervous system cancers are the 10th leading cause of death worldwide. Genome instability, cell cycle deregulation, epigenetic mechanisms, cytoarchitecture disassembly, redox homeostasis as well as apoptosis are involved in carcinogenesis. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is inversely related with the risk of developing cancer.

Atherosclerosis (ATH) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are medical conditions that straddle a communal epidemiology, underlying mechanism and a clinical syndrome that has protean manifestations, touching every organ in the body. These twin partners, ATH and NAFLD, are seemingly straightforward and relatively simple topics when considered alone, but their interdependence calls for more thought. The study of the mutual relationship of NAFLD and ATH should involve big data analytics approaches, given that they encompass a constellation of diseases and are related to several recognized risk factors and health determinants and calls to an explicit theory of change, to justify intervention.

HPV16 persistent infection and recurrent disease after LEEP.

Virol J

November 2019

Department of General Surgery and Medical Surgery Specialities, Gynecological Clinic of the University of Catania, Policlinico. Via S. Sofia78, Catania, Italy.

Background: About 23% of patients develop CIN2+ after LEEP treatment due to residual or recurrent lesions. The majority of patients with HPV infection were HPV negative before treatment, but 16,4% were still HPV 16 positive after treatment, indicating that conization do not necessarily clear HPV infection rapidly. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the possible correlation existing between the appearance of recurring high-grade lesions and the viral genotype 16, and other risk factors such as residual disease.

Dastych (2016) analysed the holotype of Isohypsibius tetradactyloides (Richters, 1907) and noticed that it possesses a very faint cuticular sculpture. For this and other characters, Dastych considered the species to be a synonym of Isohypsibius asper (Murray, 1906). The authors re-examined specimens attributed to Isohypsibius tetradactyloides by Pilato (1971) from two Sicilian rivers, and noticed that they cannot be attributed to Isohypsibius asper but to a new species.

Management of ASC-US/HPV positive post-menopausal woman.

Virol J

March 2019

Department of General Surgery and Medical Surgery Specialities, Gynecological Clinic of the University of Catania, Policlinico, Via S. Sofia, 78, Catania, Italy.

Background: The aim of our study was to determine which diagnostic course is best to identify women at risk of CIN2+ among post-menopausal women with cytological diagnosis of ASCUS METHODS: We selected women who had been post-menopausal for at least one year , and who had completed the entire diagnostic-therapeutic course that they had undertaken. The sample was divided into two arms: in the first arm, we considered 146 ASCUS positive women who had undergone the HPV test, colposcopy and then underwent more detailed diagnostics by means of LEEP or a scraping of the cervical canal. The second arm was made up of 124 ASCUS positive women who had undergone a vaginal administration of estriolo, the HPV test and colposcopy.

Background: Clinical management of HPV positive women is difficult since many of the infections, including high-risk oncogene genotypes (hr-HPV), are transient. Therefore only a limited number of patients have a high-grade lesion and sending all HPV positive women for colposcopy would only increase costs and unnecessary treatment, with serious psychological consequences for patients. The need has emerged to identify other HPV related markers able to correctly detect women with a high-risk of developing high-grade lesions.

Thoracic ultrasound: A complementary diagnostic tool in cardiology.

World J Cardiol

October 2016

Guglielmo M Trovato, Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, The University Hospital of the University of Catania, 95100 Catania, Italy.

Clinical assessment and workup of patients referred to cardiologists may need an extension to chest disease. This requires more in-depth examination of respiratory co-morbidities due to uncertainty or severity of the clinical presentation. The filter and integration of ecg and echocardiographic information, addressing to the clues of right ventricular impairment, pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension, and other less frequent conditions, such as congenital, inherited and systemic disease, usually allow more timely diagnosis and therapeutic choice.

Nuclear import sequence identification in hOAS3 protein.

Inflamm Res

November 2016

Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences, University of Catania, Catania, Italy.

Objective: The OAS proteins are characterized by their capacity to synthesize 2',5'-linked phosphodiester bonds to polymerize ATP into oligomers of adenosine. OAS3, belonging to OASs gene family, synthesizes dimeric 2-5A that binds to RNase L with low affinity and produces 2-5A oligomers shorter than the tri-tetramer 2-5As produced by other family members.

Methods: For these studies, we used the open source tools cNLS Mapper, PredictProtein and COMPARTMENTS for the nuclear localization signal prediction, UCSF Chimera for molecular graphics and analyses, The Human Protein Atlas to confirm with the IF the OAS3 cell localization and Ensembl Variation Table to identify the presence of putative single nucleotide polymorphisms in the NLS sequence identification.

This paper argues the possibility of establishing common principles of protection from psychosocial risks (PSR) on the basis of the legal positions of the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) expressed in recent cases on degrading treatment and occupational health. The author focuses on the positive obligations of the States to ensure the protection of the right for life and of the right to respect for private life. The prohibition of degrading treatment in relations between private persons is also considered as relevant to the issue of the protection from PSR.

Leishmania/Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) coinfection has emerged as an extremely serious and increasingly frequent health problem in the last decades. Considering the insidious and not typical clinical picture in presence of immunosuppressive conditions, the increasing number of people travelling in endemic zones, the ability to survive, within both human and vector bodies, of the parasite, clinicians and dermatologists as the first line should be aware of these kind of "pathologic alliances," to avoid delayed diagnosis and treatment. In this setting, the occurrence of cutaneous lesions can, paradoxically, aid the physician in recognition and approaching the correct staging and management of the two (or three) diseases.

Update on thyroid cancer treatment.

Future Oncol

October 2012

Endocrinology, Department of Clinical & Molecular Biomedicine of the University of Catania, Garibaldi-Nesima Hospital, Catania, Italy.

Surgery and radioiodine therapy are usually effective for most patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. However, poorly differentiated and anaplastic thyroid carcinomas represent a challenge to physicians on the basis of the current cancer treatment modalities. These cancer subtypes are often lethal and refractory to radioiodine therapy as well as most of the common chemotherapy drugs.

Background: The diffuse sclerosing variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (DSPC) is a relatively rare variant of papillary thyroid cancer. Large studies of patients with DSPC have been infrequently performed, and controversy still exists concerning some DSPC features and outcomes. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate the clinicopathologic features and outcomes in a series of 34 consecutive patients with DSPC and to compare them with a larger group of 245 consecutive patients with the classic variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (cPTC) that were evaluated in the same period.
