We present a case of an infection on a zygomaticus implant presenting on the skin, mimicking a cutaneous carcinoma, and presenting to a head and neck tumor board. The clinical findings were an intermittently discharging lesion over the zygomatic bone, which resolved upon removing the offending zygomaticus implant. It is essential to be aware that infections on a zygomaticus implant can occur well away from the normal tooth-bearing areas, and having a dentist with knowledge of these implants on a tumor board can prevent misdiagnosis and treatment.

Interprofessional simulation-based team training (ISBTT) is promoted as a strategy to improve collaboration in healthcare, and the literature documents benefits on teamwork and patient safety. Teamwork training in healthcare is traditionally grounded in crisis resource management (CRM), but it is less clear whether ISBTT programs explicitly take the interprofessional context into account, with complex team dynamics related to hierarchy and power. This scoping review examined key aspects of published ISBTT programs including (1) underlying theoretical frameworks, (2) design features that support interprofessional learning, and (3) reported behavioral outcomes.

Durable tolerance in kidney transplant recipients remains an important but elusive goal. We hypothesized that adding B cell depletion to T cell depletion would generate an immune milieu postreconstitution dominated by immature transitional B cells, favoring tolerance. The Immune Tolerance Network ITN039ST Research Study of ATG and Rituximab in Renal Transplantation was a prospective multicenter pilot study of live donor kidney transplant recipients who received induction with rabbit antithymocyte globulin and rituximab and initiated immunosuppression (IS) withdrawal (ISW) at 26 weeks.

The true global burden of paediatric critical illness remains unknown. Studies on children with life-threatening conditions are hindered by the absence of a common definition for acute paediatric critical illness (DEFCRIT) that outlines components and attributes of critical illness and does not depend on local capacity to provide critical care. We present an evidence-informed consensus definition and framework for acute paediatric critical illness.

January 2024

Sophany Roeung is an NP in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Teri G. Lindgren is an associate clinical professor at the University of California San Francisco School of Nursing, where Annette Carley is a clinical professor and associate director of the DNP program. Contact author: Sophany Roeung, . The authors have disclosed no potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise.

Local Problem: Discharge teaching is essential to the self-care and successful recovery of colorectal surgery patients, yet the trend toward shorter hospital stays for patients with new ileostomies limits opportunities for patient education. As a result, discharged patients at our institution are initiating calls to providers with questions that could have been addressed prior to discharge.

Purpose: The aim of this quality improvement (QI) project was to decrease patient-initiated postdischarge inquiries using a frequently asked questions (FAQs) handout at discharge.

4D Flow Magnetic Resonance Imaging (4D Flow MRI) is a non-invasive measurement technique capable of quantifying blood flow across the cardiovascular system. While practical use is limited by spatial resolution and image noise, incorporation of trained super-resolution (SR) networks has potential to enhance image quality post-scan. However, these efforts have predominantly been restricted to narrowly defined cardiovascular domains, with limited exploration of how SR performance extends across the cardiovascular system; a task aggravated by contrasting hemodynamic conditions apparent across the cardiovasculature.

Background: Olipudase alfa is a recombinant human acid sphingomyelinase enzyme replacement therapy for non-central-nervous-system manifestations of acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD). The ASCEND randomized placebo-controlled trial in adults with ASMD demonstrated reductions in sphingomyelin storage, organomegaly, interstitial lung disease and impaired diffusion capacity of the lung (DL), during the first year of olipudase alfa treatment. In an ongoing open-label extension of the ASCEND trial, individuals in the placebo group crossed over to olipudase alfa, and those in the olipudase alfa group continued treatment.

A shortage of donor hearts remains a critical problem in cardiac transplantation, resulting in longer recipient wait times and increased wait list mortality. The disparity between available donor hearts and patients with end-stage heart failure who need transplant is expected to grow. The donor heart pool can be increased by using organs from expanded criteria, Public Health Service increased risk, hepatitis C, and donation after circulatory death donors.

Novel implementation strategies to increase uptake and adherence to tuberculosis (TB) preventive therapy hold promise for reducing TB incidence in persons with HIV in high-burden settings. In persons who develop drug-susceptible TB, progress to shorten TB treatment continues to be made with the introduction of new drugs and novel treatment strategies that could allow for treatment shortening to 2 months for most people. A global case series provided powerful evidence that mpox should be considered an HIV-related opportunistic infection given its severe manifestations and poor outcomes.

Background: Globally, the US-Mexico Border is one of the largest drug trafficking regions, with Ciudad Juarez (CJ) and El Paso (EP) making up the second-largest border crossing in the world. Border communities are places where the risk of drug use harm and infectious diseases such as HIV are augmented due to the confluence of factors operating across the physical, social, economic and policy environment. Although the two cities are economically, culturally, and socially intertwined, each has distinct criminal justice systems and policy practices aimed at curtailing substance use.
