Here we document 47,381 individuals from 38 species, including 31 protected species sold between May 2017 and November 2019 in Wuhan's markets. We note that no pangolins (or bats) were traded, supporting reformed opinion that pangolins were not likely the spillover host at the source of the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While we caution against the misattribution of COVID-19's origins, the wild animals on sale in Wuhan suffered poor welfare and hygiene conditions and we detail a range of other zoonotic infections they can potentially vector.

Over the last 200 years, conversion of non-cultivated land for agriculture has substantially reduced global soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in upper soil layers. Nevertheless, practices such as no- or reduced tillage, application of organic soil amendments, and maintenance of continuous cover can increase SOC in agricultural fields. While these management practices have been well studied, the effects on SOC of cropping systems that incorporate irrigation are poorly understood.

Aims: The use of microbial fuel cells (MFC) to treat winery wastewater is promising; however, an initial acidic pH, fluctuating chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels and a lack of natural buffering in these wastewaters make providing a suitable buffer system at an ideal buffer to COD ratio.
Methods And Results: A lab scale MFC was designed, inoculated with anaerobic winery sludge and fed with synthetic winery wastewater. It was observed that at pH 6·5, the MFC performed best, the maximum output voltage was 0·63 ± 0·01 V for 60 ± 3 h, and the COD removal efficiency reached 77 ± 7%.

Physical activity (PA) levels among adolescent girls continue to steadily decline, especially for those classified as 'at-risk'. To mitigate these trends, Girls United and on the Move (GUM) was created as a dual-component PA and psychosocial program. The primary purpose of this study was to explore participant experiences within GUM, with a secondary purpose of qualitatively informing future PA programs for 'at-risk' adolescent girls.

There is growing interest in the effect of exogenous ketone body supplementation on exercise responses and performance. The limited studies to date have yielded equivocal data, likely due in part to differences in dosing strategy, increase in blood ketones, and participant training status. Using a randomized, double-blind, counterbalanced design, we examined the effect of ingesting a ketone monoester (KE) supplement (600 mg/kg body mass) or flavour-matched placebo in endurance-trained adults ( = 10 males, = 9 females; O = 57 ± 8 mL/kg/min).

Background: The taxonomic classification of Cannabis genus has been delineated through three main types: sativa (tall and less branched plant with long and narrow leaves), indica (short and highly branched plant with broader leaves) and ruderalis (heirloom type with short stature, less branching and small thick leaves). While still under discussion, particularly whether the genus is polytypic or monotypic, this broad classification reflects putative geographical origins of each group and putative chemotype and pharmacologic effect.
Methods: Here we describe a thorough investigation of cannabis accessions using a set of 23 highly informative and polymorphic SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) markers associated with important traits such as cannabinoid and terpenoid expression as well as fibre and resin production.

When using Bayesian inference, one needs to choose a prior distribution for parameters. The well-known Jeffreys prior is based on the Riemann metric tensor on a statistical manifold. Takeuchi and Amari defined the α -parallel prior, which generalized the Jeffreys prior by exploiting a higher-order geometric object, known as a Chentsov-Amari tensor.

Disinfection is used to deactivate pathogens in drinking water. However, disinfectants react with natural organic matter present in water to form disinfection by-products (DBPs). While a few of these DBPs have been studied extensively and are regulated in many countries, new unregulated DBPs (UR-DBPs) have also recently been identified in drinking water.

Sharks are a taxon of significant conservation concern and associated public interest. The scientific community largely supports management policies focusing on sustainable fisheries exploitation of sharks, but many concerned members of the public and some environmental advocates believe that sustainable shark fisheries cannot and do not exist and therefore support total bans on all shark fisheries and/or trade in shark products. The belief that sustainable shark fisheries cannot and do not exist persists despite scientific evidence showing that they can and do, and are important to livelihoods.

Data are scant on sex-related differences for electrically evoked contractions, which assess intrinsic contractile properties while limiting spinal and supraspinal adaptations to mitigate fatigue. Furthermore, the few studies that exist use stimulus frequencies considerably higher than the natural motor unit discharge rate for the target force. The purpose of this study was to compare force loss to electrically evoked contractions at a physiological stimulus frequency among young females ( = 12), young males ( = 12), old females ( = 11), and old males ( = 11).

Background: Free-living adherence to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has not been adequately tested. This randomized trial examined changes in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and accelerometer-measured purposeful physical activity over 12 months of free-living HIIT versus moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT).
Methods: Ninety-nine previously low-active participants with overweight/obesity were randomly assigned to HIIT (n = 47) or MICT (n = 52).

Blood flow occlusion (BFO) has been used to study the influence of group III/IV muscle afferents after fatiguing exercise, but it is unknown how BFO-induced activity of these afferents affects motor cortical and motoneuronal excitability during low-intensity exercise. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the acute effect of BFO on peripheral [maximal M wave (M)], spinal [cervicomedullary motor evoked potential (CMEP) normalized to M], and motor cortical [motor evoked potential (MEP) normalized to CMEP] excitability. Nine healthy men completed a sustained isometric contraction of the elbow flexors at 20% of maximal force under three conditions: ) contractile failure with BFO, ) a time-matched trial without restriction [free flow (FFiso)], and ) contractile failure with free flow (FFfail).

One of the most frequently found mutations in human melanomas is in the B-raf gene, making its protein BRAF a key target for therapy. However, in patients treated with BRAF inhibitor (BRAFi), although the response is very good at first, relapse occurs within 6 months, on the average. In order to overcome this drug resistance to BRAFi, various combinations of BRAFi with other drugs have been explored, and some are being applied clinically, such as a combination of BRAF and MEK inhibitors.

The triceps surae is comprised of the soleus, and medial (MG) and lateral (LG) gastrocnemii. Modulation of triceps surae motor units (MUs) is context- and muscle-dependent, yet it is unknown how the disparate components of the triceps surae work together to achieve the common goal of high-intensity voluntary isometric plantar flexion torque gradation. Thus, the purpose was to assess the interrelationships between MU recruitment thresholds (MURTs) and MU discharge rates (MUDRs) among these three muscles during contractions from low to high intensities.

This study compared the effects of fatigue on corticospinal responsiveness in the upper- and lower-limb muscles of the same participants. Seven healthy males performed a 2-min maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the elbow flexors or knee extensors on four separate days. Electromyographic responses were elicited by nerve stimulation (maximal M-wave) in all sessions and by transcranial magnetic stimulation (motor-evoked potential; silent period) and spinal tract stimulation (cervicomedullary or thoracic motor-evoked potentials; silent period) in one session each per limb.

Introduction: The safety of oil and gas pipelines is an increasing concern for the public, government regulators, and the industry. A safety management system cannot be efficient without having an effective integrity management program (IMP) and a strong safety culture. IMP is a formal document (policies, planning, scheduling, and technical processes) while safety culture is a measure of views, beliefs, and traditions about safety.

Current conservation templates prioritize biogeographic regions with high intensity ecosystem values, such as exceptional species richness or threat. Intensity-based targets are an important consideration in global efforts, but they do not capture all available opportunities to conserve ecosystem values, including those that accrue in low intensity over large areas. We assess six globally-significant ecosystem values-intact wilderness, freshwater availability, productive marine environments, breeding habitat for migratory wildlife, soil carbon storage, and latitudinal potential for range shift in the face of climate change-to highlight opportunities for high-impact broadly-distributed contributions to global conservation.
