Projection-neurons (PNs) within the antennal lobe (AL) of the hawkmoth respond vigorously to odor stimulation, with each vigorous response followed by a ~1 s period of suppression-dubbed the "afterhyperpolarization-phase," or AHP-phase. Prior evidence indicates that this AHP-phase is important for the processing of odors, but the mechanisms underlying this phase and its function remain unknown. We investigate this issue.

Genetic studies of closely related species can assess if gene flow was present during speciation, because signatures of past introgression often persist in the genome. We test hypotheses on which mechanisms of speciation drove diversity among three distinct lineages of desert tortoise in the genus Gopherus.

Precordial catch syndrome is a benign cause of chest pain in children and adolescents that remains underrecognized. Because of distinctive symptoms, precordial catch syndrome is not necessarily a diagnosis of exclusion. However, a detailed history eliciting diagnostic features is important, along with a physical examination excluding other pathologic disorders.

Background: The effect of lung transplantation (LTx) in patients afflicted with cystic fibrosis (CF) and pulmonary hypertension (PH) at placement on the waiting list is not well studied.
Methods: To predict the relationship between initial mean pulmonary artery pressure (MPAP) and hazard ratio (HR) of death after listing associated with LTx in adult patients with CF, the United Network for Organ Sharing database was queried for the years 2005 to 2013. Survival was assessed from waiting list entry until death on the waiting list, death after LTx, or censoring.

In allogeneic stem cell mobilization, peripheral blood stem cell mobilization with filgrastim can be considered standard of care. Poor mobilizers may be at risk for inadequate stem cell collection during apheresis. He we present a successful case of salvage plerixafor use with filgrastim in a haploidentical identical transplant patient.

The immune system is suggested to be essential in vascular remodeling and stiffening. To study the dependence upon lymphocytes in vascular stiffening, we compared an angiotensin II-model of vascular stiffening in normal C57BL/6J mice with lymphocyte-deficient RAG 1(-/-) mice and additionally characterized the component of vascular stiffness due to vasoconstriction vs. vascular remodeling.

The Coenobitidae (Decapoda, Anomura, Paguroidea) is a taxon of hermit crabs that includes two genera with a fully terrestrial life style as adults. Previous studies have shown that Coenobitidae have evolved a sense of spatial odor localization that is behaviorally highly relevant. Here, we examined the central olfactory pathway of these animals by analyzing central projections of the antennular nerve of Coenobita clypeatus, combining backfilling of the nerve with dextran-coupled dye, Golgi impregnations and three-dimensional reconstruction of the primary olfactory center, the antennular lobe.

Naturally occurring glycopeptides and glycoproteins play important roles in biological processes. Glycosylation is one of the most common post-translational modifications in vivo. Glycopeptides are involved in cell signaling and sorting, providing cell surface markers for recognition.

Background: Lung transplantation (LTx) benefit for survival in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients placed on the wait list is not well studied.
Methods: To predict the relationship between initial forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) and the hazard ratio (HR) associated with LTx in CF patients, the United Network for Organ Sharing database was queried from 2005 to 2006 for adult patients with CF. Survival was assessed from wait list entry time until death on wait list, death after LTx, or censoring.

We examined a secondary contact zone between two species of desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii and G. morafkai. The taxa were isolated from a common ancestor during the formation of the Colorado River (4-8 mya) and are a classic example of allopatric speciation.

Based on molecular features, breast cancers are grouped into intrinsic subtypes that have different prognoses and therapeutic response profiles. With increasing age, breast cancer incidence increases, with hormone receptor-positive and other luminal-like subtype tumors comprising a majority of cases. It is not known at what stage of tumor progression subtype specification occurs, nor how the process of aging affects the intrinsic subtype.

Increases in prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels are features of colon cancer. Among the different E-type prostanoid receptor subtypes, EP4 receptors are considered to play a crucial role in carcinogenesis by, for example, inducing COX-2 when stimulated with PGE2. However, EP4 receptor levels and PGE2-induced cellular responses are inconsistent among the cellular conditions.

Germination from the soil seed bank (SSB) is an important determinant of species composition in tropical forest gaps, with seed persistence in the SSB allowing trees to recruit even decades after dispersal. The capacity to form a persistent SSB is often associated with physical dormancy, where seed coats are impermeable at the time of dispersal. Germination literature often speculates, without empirical evidence, that dormancy-break in physically dormant seeds is the result of microbial action and/or abrasion by soil particles.

Dry powder inhalation aerosols of antibiotic drugs (a first-line aminoglycoside, tobramycin, and a first-line macrolide, azithromycin) and a sugar alcohol mucolytic agent (mannitol) as co-spray dried (co-SD) particles at various molar ratios of drug:mannitol were successfully produced by organic solution advanced co-spray drying from dilute solute concentration. These microparticulate/nanoparticulate aerosols consisting of various antibiotic drug:mannitol molar ratios were rationally designed with a narrow and unimodal primary particle size distribution, spherical particle shape, relatively smooth particle surface, and very low residual water content to minimize the interparticulate interactions and enhance in vitro aerosolization. These microparticulate/nanoparticulate inhalation powders were high-performing aerosols as reflected in the aerosol dispersion performance parameters of emitted dose, fine particle fraction (FPF), respirable fraction (RF), and mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD).

Facial expressions reflect decisions about the perceived meaning of social stimuli and the expected socio-emotional outcome of responding (or not) with a reciprocating expression. The decision to produce a facial expression emerges from the joint activity of a network of structures that include the amygdala and multiple, interconnected cortical and subcortical motor areas. Reciprocal transformations between these sensory and motor signals give rise to distinct brain states that promote, or impede the production of facial expressions.

Background: Neurotoxicity is a significant complication of calcineurin inhibitor use, and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome has been reported. Limited data exist on the use of alternative immunosuppression regimens in the management of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in transplant recipients.
Methods: We present the immunosuppression management strategy of a girl who underwent bilateral lung transplantation for cystic fibrosis 6 months earlier, then suddenly developed a grand mal seizure due to posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.

Context: While perioperative mortality after pancreaticoduodenectomy is decreasing, key factors remain to be elucidated.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate inpatient mortality after pancreaticoduodenectomy in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), a representative inpatient database in the USA.
Methods: Patient discharge data (diagnostic and procedure codes) and hospital characteristics were investigated for years 2009 and 2010.

A common explanation for the interference effect in the classic visual Stroop test is that reading a word (the more automatic semantic response) must be suppressed in favor of naming the text color (the slower sensory response). Neuroimaging studies also consistently report anterior cingulate/medial frontal, lateral prefrontal, and anterior insular structures as key components of a network for Stroop-conflict processing. It remains unclear, however, whether automatic processing of semantic information can explain the interference effect in other variants of the Stroop test.

A novel method for quantifying hemolysis is described. This method uses a spin filter to separate the free hemoglobin from the red blood cells suspended in the test solution. This procedure enables the use of a closed loop system that continuously measures hemolysis spectrophotometrically.
