Intrinsic and environmental drivers of pairwise cohesion in wild Canis social groups.

Ecology

December 2024

Wildlife Research and Monitoring Section, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Animals within social groups respond to costs and benefits of sociality by adjusting the proportion of time they spend in close proximity to other individuals in the group (cohesion). Variation in cohesion between individuals, in turn, shapes important group-level processes such as subgroup formation and fission-fusion dynamics. Although critical to animal sociality, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing cohesion remains a gap in our knowledge of cooperative behavior in animals.

Most orb-weaving spiders use static webs that deform only after flying prey hit the webs. However, ray spiders (Theridiosoma gemmosum) pull orb webs into cones that are loaded with enough elastic energy to snap back like slingshots at accelerations of up to 504 m s-2 once released. We test the hypothesis that ray spiders sense vibrations from flying insects to release their webs and capture prey in mid-flight.

Article Synopsis
  • Cholecystectomy is the standard treatment for average-risk patients with acute cholecystitis, but high-risk patients may benefit from alternatives like PT-GBD and EUS-GBD.
  • PT-GBD has limitations and is not suitable for every patient, especially those too ill to be transferred, making bedside EUS-GBD a viable option.
  • A case series showed that bedside EUS-GBD in the ICU was safe and effective for critically ill patients, but all required comfort care due to their serious conditions, suggesting the need for more research in this area.

A real-time automated identification technique is developed for the detection of ischemic episodes in long-term electrocardiographic (ECG) signals using mathematical expansions involving the Discrete Dilated Hermite Transform. The Discrete Hermite functions could be viewed as a set of orthogonal vectors that resemble a finite Fourier series. They are generated easily as eigenvectors of a symmetric tridiagonal matrix that commutes with the centered Fourier matrix.

J Am Chem Soc

December 2024

South China Advanced Institute for Soft Matter Science and Technology, School of Emergent Soft Matter, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510640, China.

Soft matters, particularly giant molecular self-assembly, have successfully replicated complex structures previously exclusive to metal alloys. These superlattices are constructed from mesoatoms─supramolecular spherical motifs of aggregated molecules, and the formation of superlattices critically depends on the volume distributions of these mesoatoms. Herein, we introduce two general methods to control volume asymmetry (i.
