Attenuated derivative rabies virus Ni-CE replicates in muscle cells less efficiently than does the parental pathogenic strain Nishigahara. To examine the mechanism underlying the less efficient replication of Ni-CE, we compared the activities of Ni-CE and Nishigahara phosphoproteins, viral interferon (IFN) antagonists, to suppress IFN-β promoter activity in muscle cells and we demonstrated a defect of Ni-CE phosphoprotein in this ability. Treatment with an IFN-β-neutralizing antibody improved the replication efficiency of Ni-CE in muscle cells, indicating that produced IFN inhibits Ni-CE replication.

The capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is the major virulence factor of the emerging zoonotic pathogen Streptococcus suis. We determined whether activation of the central A1AR enables rats to maintain normal sinus rhythm even after their body temperature has decreased to less than 20 °C. Intracerebroventricular injection of an adenosine A1 agonist, N6-cyclohexyladenosine (CHA), followed by cooling decreased the body temperature of rats to less than 20 °C.

We observed structural changes in the follicles and uterus of heavy draft mares during estrus and examined the effect of a single injection of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog buserelin on ovulation and endocrine profiles. Twenty-two heavy draft mares were divided into a buserelin-treated group (n=8) and a control group (n=14). Mares were given an intramuscular injection of 40 µg buserelin when they presented signs of estrus to a teaser stallion, had ≥45 mm diameter follicles, and presented decreased uterine edema compared with the previous examination.

The large (L) protein of rabies virus (RABV) plays multiple enzymatic roles in viral RNA synthesis and processing.
