Background: Individual immune-related alternative splicing (AS) events have been found to be significant in immune regulation and cancer prognosis. However, a comprehensive analysis of AS events in cancer cells based on immune-related genes (IRGs) has not been performed, and its clinical value is unknown.
Methods: Colon cancer cases with AS data were obtained from TCGA, and then, we identified overall survival-related AS events (OS-ASEs) based on IRGs by univariate analyses.

Background: Clinical internships are a critical transition period for nursing students to develop into nursing professionals and are essential for the solidification of their professional attitudes. Undergraduate nursing students face multiple sources of severe anxiety that affect their nursing career development during this period. This study aimed to understand the anxiety experienced by undergraduate nursing students in the later period of their internship periods in a Chinese educational context.

Despite intense efforts, the cause of Alzheimer's disease is still not fully understood. A chemical and biochemical perspective could shed light on this disorder. Secondary chemical bonding between calcium and carbonyl oxygen atoms of glycine and valine might give rise to aggregates in the brain, which may later result in cell senescence.

Carcinogenesis was postulated as the result of the local buildup of strong acids such as hydrogenchloride which may trigger metastasis. A previous study revealed that bicarbonate raised tumor pH and suppressed metastases. The phosphate groups in DNA on neutrophil extracellular traps possess hydrogen bonding capacity and can accept protons.

Purpose: Negative elongation factor complex member C/D (NELFCD), mapped to chromosome 20q13.32, has been found to be significantly overexpressed in colorectal cancer (CRC) by our previous research. However, whether its overexpression contributes to CRC development is unknown.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as important regulators during tumorigenesis by serving as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs). In this study, the qRT-PCR results indicated that the lncRNA protein disulfide isomerase family A member 3 pseudogene 1 (PDIA3P) was overexpressed in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and decreased the survival rate of OSCC patients. CCK-8 and clonal colony formation assays were used to detect the effects of PDIA3P on proliferation.

Background: TAp63 is known as the most potent transcription activator and tumor suppressor. microRNAs (miRNAs) are increasingly recognized as essential components of the p63 pathway, mediating downstream post-transcriptional gene repression. The aim of present study was to investigate a negative feedback loop between TAp63 and miR-133b.

Carvedilol, a third-generation and nonselective β-adrenoceptor antagonist, is a licensed drug for treating patients suffering from heart failure in clinics. It has been shown that Carvedilol protects cells against mitochondrial dysfunction. However, it's unknown whether Carvedilol affects mitochondrial biogenesis.

An acute viral infection may lead to death, as seen in the recent novel 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus pandemic that rapidly spread worldwide. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a systemic disorder with high mortality rates and can be triggered by various etiological agents, including viral infections. H1N1-associated HLH is a very rare condition that may cause extremely severe complications leading to multiple organ failure (MOF) and death.

Receptor for Advanced Glycation End Products (RAGE) is an oncogenic trans-membranous receptor overexpressed in various human cancers. However, the role of RAGE in breast cancer development and proliferation is still unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that RAGE expression levels are correlated to the degree of severity of breast cancer.

Vascular remodeling of cerebral arterioles, including proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), is the major cause of changes in the cross-sectional area and diameter of the arteries and sudden interruption of blood flow or hemorrhage in the brain, ie, stroke. Accumulating evidence strongly supports an important role for chloride (Cl(-)) channels in vascular remodeling and stroke. At least three Cl(-) channel genes are expressed in VSMCs: 1) the TMEM16A (or Ano1), which may encode the calcium-activated Cl(-) channels (CACCs); 2) the CLC-3 Cl(-) channel and Cl(-)/H(+) antiporter, which is closely related to the volume-regulated Cl(-) channels (VRCCs); and 3) the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which encodes the PKA- and PKC-activated Cl(-) channels.

Tissue factor (TF) expression on islets has been shown to trigger instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR), leading to rapid islet loss in portal vein islet transplantation. This study investigated whether antisense RNA-mediated TF gene knockdown in islets could suppress IBMIR as a strategy to overcome IBMIR. Neonatal porcine islet cell clusters (NICCs) were transfected with or without TF-specific antisense RNA or a nonspecific RNA by a lipid-based method.

Background: Islet xeno-transplantation via the portal vein has been proposed as an alternative of islet allo-transplantation for treatment of type 1 diabetes. However, the precise hepatic capacity has not been addressed.
Methods: We mimicked cell transplantation by infusion of dogs with alginate/poly-1-lysine/alginate (APA) microbeads via either the portal vein (PV) or hepatic artery (HA).
